BACKGROUND: Patients infected with a parasite often develop opisthorchiasis viverrini, which often progresses into cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) due to the asymptomatic nature of the infection. Currently, there are no effective diagnostic methods for opisthorchiasis or cholangiocarcinoma. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the host-responsive protein that can be developed as a diagnostic biomarker of opisthorchiasis and cholangiocarcinoma. METHODS: Plasma samples were collected from non-OVCCA, OV, and CCA subjects, and the proteomes were investigated by LC-MS/MS. Venn diagrams and protein network prediction by STITCH were used to identify the potential biomarkers. The level of candidate protein, the plasma checkpoint protein 1 (Chk1), was measured by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Chk1 was present in the center of the protein network analysis in both the OV and CCA groups. In addition, the plasma Chk1 levels were significantly increased in both groups (P< 0.05). The sensitivity of the opisthorchiasis viverrini and cholangiocarcinoma was 59.38% and 65.62%, respectively, while the specificity of both was 85.71%. CONCLUSION: Chk1 was identified by differential plasma proteomes and was increased in O. viverrini-infected and cholangiocarcinoma-derived plasma samples. Higher levels of plasma Chk1 levels may serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker for opisthorchiasis and cholangiocarcinoma.

Purpose. To assess the production risk of rock collapse in a deep coal mine to identify hazards in the workplaces of the excavation site, taking into account different methods of protection of workings. Methods. A comprehensive approach was used, which included: analysis and generalization of known research; expert evaluation; use of the basic provisions of probability theory and set algebra (Venn diagrams), the method of estimating the production risk of Fine-Kinney; processing, analysis and interpretation of the obtained results. Results. Problems and sources of industrial risk from rock collapses during maintenance of workings, risk-forming factors that contribute to the threat of dangerous events at the excavation site are analyzed. The decision-making model is considered, which is based on the description of situations when the production risk of the dangerous factor “landslides and collapses” in the maintenance of preparatory workings depends on the result of choosing an alternative method of protection of the retractable lane. For excavation sites under the same mining and geological conditions for all workplaces, the probability of receiving consequences from dangerous events due to uncertain conditions of their implementation has been established. It is fixed that the realization of this production risk is influenced by low reliability and inefficiency of the practiced methods of protection of excavations. Risk analysis is defined as the systematic use of available information to identify hazards in the maintenance of long workings. Novelty. A model for monitoring the production risk of rock collapses in excavations of deep coal mines is proposed, which allows assessing the dynamics of the threat at the stage of technical decisions related to the choice and justification of the method of protection of workings taking into account the interaction of risk factors. Practical significance. When formulating measures to reduce the risk of dangerous events at the excavation site, it is necessary to take into account that the production risk of rock collapse while maintaining the workings depends largely on the method of protection and effectiveness of technological measures.

The construct “self” appears in diverse forms in theories about what it is to be a person. As the sense of “self” is typically assessed through personal reports, differences in its description undoubtedly reflect significant differences in peoples’ apperception of self. This report describes the development, reliability, and factorial structure of the Experience of Sense of Self (E-SOS), an inventory designed to assess one’s perception of self in relation to the person’s perception of various potential “others.” It does so using Venn diagrams to depict and quantify the experienced overlap between the self and “others.” Participant responses to the instrument were studied through Exploratory Factor Analysis. This yielded a five-factor solution: 1) Experience of Positive Sensation; 2) Experience of Challenges; 3) Experience of Temptations; 4) Experience of Higher Power; and 5) Experience of Family. The items comprising each of these were found to produce reliable subscales. Further research with the E-SOS and suggestions for its use are offered.  DOI:10.2458/azu_jmmss_v4i2_shvil
