This paper proposes a new feature extraction method for off-line recognition of Myanmar printed documents. One of the most important factors to achieve high recognition performance in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system is the selection of the feature extraction methods. Different types of existing OCR systems used various feature extraction methods because of the diversity of the scripts’ natures. One major contribution of the work in this paper is the design of logically rigorous coding based features. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, this paper assumed the documents are successfully segmented into characters and extracted features from these isolated Myanmar characters. These features are extracted using structural analysis of the Myanmar scripts. The experimental results have been carried out using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and compare the pervious proposed feature extraction method.

Automatic Bangla character recognition has been a great challenge for research and development because of the huge number of characters, change of shape in a word and in conjunctive characters, and other similar reasons. An optical joint transform correlation-based technique is developed for Bangla character recognition which involves a simple architecture, but can operate at a very high speed because of optics, and offer a very high level of accuracy with negligible false alarms. The proposed correlation technique can successfully identify a target character in a given input scene by producing a single correlation peak per target at the target location. The discrimination between target and non-target correlation peaks is found to be very high even in noisy conditions. The recognition performance of the proposed technique is observed to be insensitive to the type and number of targets. Further improvement of the technique is made by incorporating a synthetic discriminant function, which is created from distorted images of the target character and hence can make the system efficiently recognize Bangla characters in different practical scenarios.

Finger vein pattern, as a promising hand-based biometric technology, has been well studied in recent years. In this paper, a new superpixel-based finger vein recognition method is presented. In the proposed method, we develop two types of effective superpixels, i.e. stable superpixel and discriminative superpixel to represent finger vein image and these superpixels are expected to play different roles in matching stage. In detail, the stable and discriminative superpixels are firstly learned from the training images for each enrolled class. When verifying a testing image, we just compare the superpixels at the same location as the two types of superpixels in template. Then, the two types of superpixels are combined utilizing a reversible weight-based fusion method in score level. Additionally, to further improve the recognition performance, we explore the superpixel context feature (SPCF). For each superpixel the SPCF is obtained by comparing the current superpixel with its surrounding neighbors. In the final matching stage, we integrate the matching score of two types of superpixels and it of the SPCF using the weighted SUM fusion method. The experimental results on two open finger vein databases, i.e. PolyU and SDUMLA-FV, show that our method not only performs better than the existing superpixel-based method, but also has advantages in comparison with some traditional ones.

Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is an effective method to describe sequential signals in many applications. As to model estimation issue, common training algorithm only focuses on the optimization of model parameters. However, model structure influences system performance as well. Although some structure optimization methods are proposed, they are usually implemented as an independent module before parameter optimization. In this paper, the clustering feature of states in HMM is discussed through comparing the mechanism of Quadratic Discriminant Function (QDF) classifier and HMM. Then, through the clustering effect of Viterbi training and Baum–Welch training, a novel clustering-based model pre-training approach is proposed. It can optimize model parameters and model structure by turns, until the representative states of all models are explored. Finally, the proposed approach is evaluated on two typical OCR applications, printed and handwritten Arabic text line recognition. And it is compared with some other optimization methods. The improvement of character recognition performance proves the proposed approach can make more precise state allocation. And the representative states are benefit to HMM decoding.


In this paper, we propose ANN based online handwritten character recognition for Telugu Language. In literature review, it is observed that Size of the database and preprocessing approaches plays prominent role in the recognition performance. Preprocessing techniques like normalization, interpolation, Uniformization, Smoothing, Slant Correction and resampling techniques are performed for better recognition performance. Local features like(x,y)co-ordinates, (x,y) ( , ) 2 2  x  y and the global features like tan() are considered as features for ANN modeling and Classification of 52 Telugu vowels and consonants. Recognition performance is evaluated by augmentation the local, global features and and tan () Features. Theperformance is evaluated in terms of precision, recall and F-measure. Significant Improvement is reported by augmentation andby adopting preprocessing techniques. The database used for the study is HP-online Telugu database.

This paper proposes a novel method which enables a Chinese character recognition system to obtain reliable recognition. In this method, two thresholds, i.e. class region thresholdRk and disambiguity thresholdAk, are used by each Chinese character k when the classifier is designed based on the nearest neighbor rule, where Rk defines the pattern distribution region of character k, and Ak prevents the samples not belonging to character k from being ambiguously recognized as character k. A novel algorithm to derive the appropriate thresholds Ak and Rk is developed so that a better recognition reliability can be obtained through iterative learning. Experiments performed on the ITRI printed Chinese character database have achieved highly reliable recognition performance (such as 0.999 reliability with a 95.14% recognition rate), which shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, a new feature fusion method for Handwritten Character Recognition based on single tri-axis accelerometer has been proposed. The process can be explained as follows: firstly, the short-time energy (STE) features are extracted from accelerometer data. Secondly, the Frequency-domain feature namely Fast Fourier transform Coefficient (FFT) are also extracted. Finally, these two categories features are fused together and the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to reduce the dimension of the fusion feature. Recognition of the gestures is performed with Multi-class Support Vector Machine. The average recognition results of ten Arabic numerals using the proposed fusion feature are 84.6%, which are better than only using STE or FFT feature. The performance of experimental results show that gesture-based interaction can be used as a novel human computer interaction for consumer electronics and mobile device.
