Abstract Purpose: It is urgent to mitigate the environmental impacts resulting from agriculture, especially in highly biodiverse and threatened areas, as the Brazilian Cerrado. We aim to investigate whether phosphatase activity and mycorrhizal colonization are alternative plant strategies for nutrient acquisition in maize cultivated under fertilized and unfertilized conditions in Brazil, potentially contributing to reduce the use of phosphate fertilizers needed for production.Methods: Three experiments were performed: the first was conducted in a glasshouse, with 17 experimental pure maize lineages and two phosphorus treatments; the second in the field, with 3 pure maize lineages and two treatments, one without fertilization and another with NPK fertilization; and the third was also carried out in the field, with 13 simple commercial hybrids, grown either under NK or under NPK treatment. Soil and plant variables were measured and tested for the response to fertilization, differences amongst genotypes and response to phosphatase activity and mycorrhizal colonization.Results: We detected a positive effect of mycorrhizal colonization upon growth in pure maize lineages. The activity of acid phosphatase was modulated by the availability of phosphorus and nitrogen in the soil, and promoted grain filling of commercial hybrids in soils with low phosphorus availability. Conclusions: These results demonstrate, for the first time, that it is possible to select genotypes that are more adapted to low soil phosphorus availability aiming at organic production, or to use genotypes that have high phosphatase activity under phosphorus fertilization to reduce the amount of added phosphorus needed for maize production in Brazil.

Five phosphorus rates (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 kg P/ha) were tested with four rice genotypes in Boro (BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan45, EH1 and EH2) and T. Aman (BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan49, EH1 and EH2) season. Phosphorus rates did not influence grain yield irrespective of varieties in T. Aman season while in Boro season P response was observed among the P rates. Application of P @ 10 kg/ha significantly increased the grain yield. But when P was applied @ 20 and 30 kg P/ha, the grain yield difference was not significant. The optimum and economic rate of P for T. Aman was 20 kg P/ha but in Boro rice the optimum and economic doses of P were 22 and 30 kg/ha, respectively. Hybrid entries (EH1 and EH2) used P more efficiently than inbred varieties. A negative P balance was observed up to 10 kg P/ha. A field experiment on a greengram-wheat cropping sequence was carried out under limited water supply conditions in 1997-98 and 1998-99 at the farm of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The greengram was sown either on flat beds or on broad beds 2 m in width, divided by furrows, with 0, 30 and 60 kg P2O5/ha. After the harvest of greengram pods, wheat was grown in the same plots, either with the greengram stover removed or with the stover incorporated along with 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha applied to wheat. The grain yield of greengram was higher when sown on broad beds with furrows compared to flat bed sowing, and the application of 30 or 60 kg P2O5/ha resulted in significantly higher grain yields compared to no phosphorus application. The combination of broad bed and furrows with phosphorus fertilization was found to be ideal for achieving higher productivity in greengram. The land configuration treatments had no impact on the productivity of wheat. The application of phosphorus to the preceding crop had a significant residual effect on the grain yield of wheat. The incorporation of greengram stover also significantly increased the grain yield of wheat. The increasing levels of N increased the grain yield of wheat significantly up to 80 kg/ha. The combination of greengram stover incorporation and 80 kg N/ha applied to wheat significantly increased the grain yield. Further, there was a significant interaction effect between the phosphorus applied to the preceding crop and N levels given to wheat on the grain yield of wheat.

Abstract High contact resistance can be caused by moisture absorption in low phosphorus content BPTEOS. Moisture diffused through the TiN glue layer is absorbed by the BPTEOS during subsequent thermal processes resulting in increased contact resistance. This failure mode was studied by combining different failure analysis methods and was confirmed by duplication on experimental wafers.

Experiments were conducted to study the genotypic variability for tolerance to combined stresses of low availability of phosphorus (P) and drought in 14 mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek] accessions. The accessions were evaluated under four conditions viz., control (sufficient P, irrigated), low P (without P, irrigated), drought (sufficient P, withholding irrigation) and combined stresses (low P, withholding irrigation). The relative stress tolerance was estimated for 22 agro-physiological traits. The principal component analysis (PCA) and relative stress indices (RSIs) of traits exhibited significant variation among the treatments and accessions. Based on RSIs, the PCA ranking analysis showed that the accessions IC 280489, PDM 139 and IC 76491 were highly ranked and tolerant to low P, drought and combined stresses. The relative increase in component traits such as photosynthetic parameters, relative water content, above-ground biomass, seed P content and number of pods plant–1 were higher while canopy temperature and water use efficiency were reduced in tolerant accessions. In contrast, IPM 2-3 was found to be relatively sensitive to all three treatments. Tolerant accessions may be either included in the breeding program or used directly as cultivar that can be grown under low P and drought.
