Knowledge discovery is the process of adding knowledge from a large amount of data. The quality of knowledge generated from the process of knowledge discovery greatly affects the results of the decisions obtained. Existing data must be qualified and tested to ensure knowledge discovery processes can produce knowledge or information that is useful and feasible. It deals with strategic decision-making for an organization. Combining multiple operational databases and external data create the data warehouse. This treatment is very vulnerable to incomplete, inconsistent, and noisy data. Data mining provides a mechanism to clear this deficiency before finally stored in the data warehouse. This research tries to give technique to improve the quality of information in the data warehouse.

This project presents the patterns and relations between attributes of Iran Higher Education data gained from the use of data mining techniques to discover knowledge and use them in decision making system of IHE. Large dataset of IHE is difficult to analysis and display, since they are significant for decision making in IHE. This study utilized the famous data mining software, Weka and SOM to mine and visualize IHE data. In order to discover worthwhile patterns, we used clustering techniques and visualized the results. The selected dataset includes data of five medical university of Tehran as a small data set and Ministry of Science - Research and Technology's universities as a larger data set. Knowledge discovery and visualization are necessary for analyzing of these datasets. Our analysis reveals some knowledge in higher education aspect related to program of study, degree in each program, learning style, study mode and other IHE attributes. This study helps to IHE to discover knowledge in a visualize way; our results can be focused more by experts in higher education field to assess and evaluate more.

With advances in technologies in the past decade, the amount of data generated and recorded has grown enormously in virtually all fields of industry and science. This extraordinary amount of data provides unprecedented opportunities for data-driven decision-making and knowledge discovery. However, the task of analyzing such large-scale dataset poses significant challenges and calls for innovative statistical methods specifically designed for faster speed and higher efficiency. In this chapter, we review currently available methods for big data, with a focus on the subsampling methods using statistical leveraging and divide and conquer methods.

The information age has made information communication technology (ICT) a necessity for conducting business. This in turn has led to the exponential increase in the electronic capture of data and its storage in vast data warehouses. In order to respond quickly to fast changing markets, organizations must maximize these raw data and information resources. Specifically, they need to transform them into germane knowledge to aid superior decision-making (Wickramasinghe & von Lubitz, 2006). To do this effectively not only involves the analysis of the data and information but also requires the use of sophisticated tools to enable such analyses to occur. Knowledge discovery technologies represent a spectrum of new technologies that facilitate the analysis of data to find relationships from the data to finding reasons behind observable patterns (i.e., transform the data into relevant information and germane knowledge). Such new discoveries can have a profound impact on decision making in general and the designing of business strategies. With the massive increase in data being collected and the demands of a new breed of intelligent applications like customer relationship management, demand planning, and predictive forecasting, these knowledge discovery technologies are becoming competitive necessities for providing a high performance and feature rich intelligent application servers for intelligent enterprises. Knowledge management (KM) tools and technologies are the systems that integrate various legacy systems, databases, ERP systems, and data warehouse to help facilitate an organization’s knowledge discovery process. Integrating all of these with advanced decision support and online real time events enables an organization to understand customers better and devise business strategies accordingly. Creating a competitive edge is the goal of all organizations employing knowledge discovery for decision support (Thorne & Smith, 2000). The following provides a synopsis of the major tools and critical considerations required to enable an organization to successfully effect appropriate knowledge sharing, knowledge distribution, knowledge creation, as well as knowledge capture and codification processes and hence embrace effective knowledge management (KM) techniques and advanced knowledge discovery.

In multiattribute decision making, it is critical to indentify the importance degree of attributes before the overall assessment of the alternatives. In this paper, we give a measurement of importance degree of attributes based on knowledge discovery in the decision information system, which satisfies the conditions of fuzzy measure. Further, we construct an evaluation model combined Choquet integral with the importance degree measure. The case study illustrates the validity and the effectiveness of the method.
