A distribution function F on (0,∞) belongs to the subexponential class if the ratio of 1 – F(2)(x) to 1 – F(x) converges to 2 as x →∞. A necessary condition for membership in is used to prove that a certain class of functions previously thought to be contained in has members outside of . Sufficient conditions on the tail of F are found which ensure F belongs to ; these conditions generalize previously published conditions.

AbstractPrevious studies showed that the dynamic equations for a porous fluid-saturated solid may lose hyperbolicity and thus render the boundary-value problem ill-posed while the equations for the same but dry solid remain hyperbolic. This paper presents sufficient conditions for hyperbolicity in both dry and saturated states. Fluid-saturated solids are described by two different systems of equations depending on whether the permeability is zero or nonzero (locally undrained and drained conditions, respectively). The paper also introduces a notion of wave speed consistency between the two systems as a necessary condition which must be satisfied in order for the solution in the locally drained case to tend to the undrained solution as the permeability tends to zero. It is shown that the symmetry and positive definiteness of the acoustic tensor of the skeleton guarantee both hyperbolicity and the wave speed consistency of the equations.

AbstractLet G be a finite transitive permutation group of degree n, with point stabilizer {H\neq 1} and permutation character π. For every positive integer t, we consider the generalized character {\psi_{t}=\rho_{G}-t(\pi-1_{G})}, where {\rho_{G}} is the regular character of G and {1_{G}} the 1-character. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on t (and G) which guarantee that {\psi_{t}} is a character of G. A necessary condition is that {t\leq\min\{n-1,\lvert H\rvert\}}, and it turns out that {\psi_{t}} is a character of G for {t=n-1} resp. {t=\lvert H\rvert} precisely when G is 2-transitive resp. a Frobenius group.

At the same time, some sufficient conditions are obtained for the oscillations of multiple delays linear fractional differential equation. Several examples are given to illustrate our theorems.

We study the separability of bipartite quantum systems in arbitrary dimensions using the Bloch representation of their density matrix. This approach enables us to find an alternative characterization of the separability problem, from which we derive a necessary condition and sufficient conditions for separability. For a certain class of states the necessary condition and a sufficient condition turn out to be equivalent, therefore yielding a necessary and sufficient condition. The proofs of the sufficient conditions are constructive, thus providing decompositions in pure product states for the states that satisfy them. We provide examples that show the ability of these conditions to detect entanglement. In particular, the necessary condition is proved to be strong enough to detect bound entangled states.

In order to characterize the bivariate signals, minimum-energy bivariate wavelet frames with arbitrary dilation matrix are studied, which are based on superiority of the minimum-energy frame and the significant properties of bivariate wavelet. Firstly, the concept of minimum-energy bivariate wavelet frame is defined, and its equivalent characterizations and a necessary condition are presented. Secondly, based on polyphase form of symbol functions of scaling function and wavelet function, two sufficient conditions and an explicit constructed method are given. Finally, the decomposition algorithm, reconstruction algorithm, and numerical examples are designed.

Thucydides presents the words and deeds of individuals chiefly in terms of their importance for understanding the war. He characterizes leading actors through their speeches, indications of motivation, authorial comments, and the narrative itself. These techniques allow remarkable nuance, even ambiguity, of interpretation. This chapter examines the representations of Pericles, Nicias, Alcibiades, Brasidas, and Thucydides himself, highlighting the similar and contrasting traits that unite them. In Thucydides’ narrative, Pericles’ pride in Athens, refusal to yield to Sparta, and brilliant oratory lead Athens into the war. Nicias evaluates the expedition to Sicily with Periclean prudence, but his fear of a change in fortune and of the Athenian assembly lead to the expedition’s defeat. Alcibiades shares Pericles’ aristocratic background and strategic imagination, but his self-centeredness and contempt for customs twice cause the Athenians to lose trust. Through delineating these individual characteristics and behaviors, Thucydides clarifies the war's narrative.

Abstract Level-set methods for convex optimization are predicated on the idea that certain problems can be parameterized so that their solutions can be recovered as the limiting process of a root-finding procedure. This idea emerges time and again across a range of algorithms for convex problems. Here we demonstrate that strong duality is a necessary condition for the level-set approach to succeed. In the absence of strong duality, the level-set method identifies $$\epsilon $$ ϵ -infeasible points that do not converge to a feasible point as $$\epsilon $$ ϵ tends to zero. The level-set approach is also used as a proof technique for establishing sufficient conditions for strong duality that are different from Slater’s constraint qualification.
