The design of the vocal smoke detector incorporated psychoacoustic research to more effectively waken children. It also provided an opportunity to examine and improve the usability of an often-overlooked but critical household product. Human factors research into existing smoke detectors identified ergonomic and interaction opportunities in installation and use, which were addressed by an effective design and development process. The result of this effort was not just an appealing and usable product but a next-generation smoke detector that enhances safety by design.

We have developed two radiation-hard ASICs for optical data transmission in the ATLAS pixel detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC): a driver chip for a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diode for 80 Mbit/s data transmission from the detector, and a Bi -Phase Mark decoder chip to recover the control data and 40 MHz clock which is received optically by a PIN diode on the detector side. We present comprehensive results from the final design and from irradiation studies of both circuits with 24 GeV protons up to a total dose of 62 Mrad.

An optical package of novel design has been developed for the ATLAS pixel detector. The package contains two VCSELs and one PIN diote to transmit and receive optical signals. The design is based on a simple connector-type concept and is made of radiation-hard material. Several packages have been fabricated and show promising results.
