The ZnO-Cr2O3 composites with different complex proportion were prepared by a sol-gel method. The mol ratio of Zn and Cr element could be tuned by controlling the concentration of the precursors. These composites showed photocatalytic activities in degradation of methyl orange under the irradiation of 300W mercury lamp. And the activities regularly varied with the mol ratio of Zn and Cr. When n(Zn):n(Cr)=10:1, a composite with best photocatalytic activity could be obtained.

The ammonia phosphate treated HZSM-5 zeolite was used as support for TiO2 prepared by sol-gel method. Adsorption and photocatalytic activity of the zeolite, adsorption of the loaded TiO2, and the optimum TiO2 loading percentage were studied. The zeolite can concentrate methyl orange solution after adsorbing water and possesses no obvious photocatalytic activity. The solution reached its adsorption equilibrium after 20 min when using TiO2 loaded on HZSM-5. In the TiO2 loading range from 10% to 70%, the dye decoloration rate increased constantly from 20% to 36.2%. The activity of the TiO2 was enhanced after loading with the optimum loading percent of 70%. During the whole 180 min of irradiation, TiO2/HZSM-5 showed enhanced methyl orange decoloration activity.

Quantum-sized TiO2 had been prepared by using Ti(n-OC4H9)4 as the raw material via a microwave-assisted sol-gel method. The influence of different processing temperature and time on the size of TiO2 was researched. The TiO2 was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The prepared TiO2 presents anatase phase structure by TEM and XRD. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 was evaluated by the degradation rate of methyl orange in aqueous solution. The particle size of TiO2 was about 9.10 nm when the processing temperature was 160°C and the processing time was 90 min (160°C-90min), and the photocatalytic performance was the best under this size. When the initial concentration of methyl orange was 10 mg/L and the amount of quantum-sized TiO2 was 0.6 g/L, the degradation rate of methyl orange under ultraviolet and solar irradiation at room temperature in 60 min were 40% and 86%, respectively.

Background: The properties of the material are altered when material size shifted towards nano-regime. This feature could be used for wastewater treatment process using model pollutant such as dyes. Recently, nanoparticles are synthesized by a green chemical route using different capping agents. This is the reason we adopt starch as green capping agent along with sol-gel method. Objective: To synthesize cobalt oxide nanoparticles by green chemical route and utilized it in degradation of dyes. Methods: Synthesis of cobalt oxide nanoparticles by sol-gel method using starch as a capping agent. The characteristics of surface modifications were investigated by UV-VIS, TEM, SEM, XRD and FTIR techniques. Results: Cobalt oxide nanoparticles synthesized and inhibited photocatalytic activity. Conclusion: Deactivation of photocatalytic activity due to complex nature of starch. This property can be used elsewhere as in light shielding applications to coat and protect surfaces in order to keep them cool and safe from damage as in the painting of vehicles, roofs, buildings, water tanks, etc.

The ZnFe2O4 and TiO2 nanocomposite films was prepared by Sol-Gel method on conductive glass, and the influence factors of it’s photoelectrocatalytic performence such as the film layer, pole and voltage was investigated. The results indicated that: the photocatalytic effects of composite films with ZnFe2O4+ TiO2+ ZnFe2O4 was the best. The decomposing ratio of methyl orange with the photoelectrocatalysis of composite films at voltage 0.2-6V all increased unstably. At the same time, the distance from films to pole plank also had the effects on the photocatalytic activities of the films.

Research on synthesis of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) using sol-gel method with varying calcination temperatures at 500, 600, and 700 °C has been done. This study aims to determine the effect of calcination temperature on the characteristics of the obtained products which encompasses crystal structure, surface morphology, band-gap energy, and photocatalytic activity for the decolorization of methyl orange dyes through its kinetic study. Bismuth oxide prepared by sol-gel method was undertaken by dissolving Bi(NO3)3·5H2O and citric acid in HNO3. The mixture was stirred then heated at 100 °C. The gel formed was dried in the oven and then calcined at 500, 600, and 700 °C for 5 h. The obtained products were a pale yellow powder, indicating the formation of bismuth oxide. This is confirmed by the existence of Bi–O and Bi–O–Bi functional groups through FTIR analysis. All three products possess the same mixed crystal structures of α-Bi2O3 (monoclinic) and γ-Bi2O3 (body center cubic), but their morphologies and band gap values are different. The higher the calcination temperature, the larger the particle size and the smaller the band gap value. The accumulative differences in characteristics appoint SG700 to have the highest photocatalytic activity compared to SG600 and SG500 as indicated by its percent degradation value and decolorization rate constant.
