Pure TiO2, Ce-doped and Ce/Si-codoped TiO2 nanoparticles with different Ce contents were synthesized by using a sol-gel-hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized samples were annealed at 400 °C. Their crystallization was investigated by Raman spectroscope. The result showed that Ce-doping and Ce-Si codoping decreased the crystallization. The interfacial and fractal properties were investigated by synchrotron radiation small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The results indicated that Ce-doping induced the Porod negative deviation, and the fractal properties showed TiO2 nanoparticles codoped by Ce-Si were rougher than these of the pure TiO2 and Ce-doped TiO2. This rough surface of the nanoparticles was helpful to improve the photocatalytic activity.

P-doped titania was synthesized by a one step hydrothermal method and sol-gel method, which is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The samples prepared by hydrothermal method demonstrate higher photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of methylene blue under xenon lamp which has similar spectra to solar light, and also is much superior to that of the commercial P25. The as prepared P-doped titania shows a small particle size (the minimum reaches to 4.5 nm). In addition, the samples prepared by hydrothermal treatment could severely influence the crystal lattice structure. Morever, P-doped titania can further enhacnce the photocatalytic activity effectively, and hydrothermal treatment is a very suitable method for the synthesis of P-doped titania. This excellent performance could endow the as-prepared P-doped titania potential in purifying wastewater.

AbstractMicrocomposites consisting of TiO2 and ThF4 or UO3 (0.5–2% of the TiO2 mass) are produced by sol-gel synthesis of TiO2 in presence of the respective additives. X-ray diffraction study reveals small effect of the latter on TiO2 phase composition and cell parameters and significant influence on the crystallite size and UV/Vis reflectance spectra. The photocatalytic tests in presence of TiO2-ThF4 microcomposites under UV and solar irradiation show a non-monotonic increase of the Malachite Green degradation rate constant with the increase of ThF4-content. No changes in the photocatalytic activity are observed in the presence of UO3 but the latter composites exhibit activity in darkness. The results are compared with previously reported data on the performance of TiO2-ThO2 photocatalyst with the same radioactivity and suggest that both radioactivity and the chemical nature of the dopants are responsible for the photocatalytic performance of TiO2-based composites containing radioactive substances.

ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites with several ratio of the components were prepared by sol-gel method using titanium isopropoxide and titanium butoxide as titania precursors. Phase formation and photocatalytic activity of ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites depend on ratio of the components and calcination temperature. The photocatalytic activity in dependence on calcination temperasture, phase composition was determined by degradation of methylene blue solution under Hg lamp and solar light imitating illumination. The highest photocatalytic activity showed ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites containing 99 mol.% ZnO and 50 mol% ZnO when hexagonal ZnTiO3 phase was formed. ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited enhanced photoactivity under solar light with respect to Hg lamp irradiation.

Zinc borate (4ZnO·B2O3·H2O) crystallites at diverse pH values were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The phase composition, morphologies and photocatalytic properties of the samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV–vis spectro-scopy and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectro-scopy. Results show that the 4ZnO·B2O3·H2O microcrystalline obtained at pH=9 shows a new clintheriforms morphologies assembled by nanowiskers. Superior UV-light photocatalytic activity of the samples for MB, RhB and MO is observed especially higher than that of P25 for MB. These samples exhibit morphology-related ultraviolet absorbing ability with different optical band gaps from 4.01 eV to 4.22 eV. Band gaps are responsible for the highly UV-light photocatalytic activity.
