AbstractA novel approach is presented to synergistically enhance photocatalytic activity in a nanocomposite using the high aspect ratio of carbon nanotube (CNT) and their unique electrical properties. Composite nanoparticles were synthesized with sol-gel nano-coating on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The nanostructure was characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, FTIR and UV-VIS spectroscopies. Photocatalytic efficiencies of commercial photocatalysts (Degussa P25) and TiO2 nano-coated MWNTs were evaluated by Azo dye degradation tests. Superior photocatalytic activity was observed for the nanocomposite with UV-A and with visible light only irradiation.

The sol-gel process is applied to respectively prepare nano-TiO2films with Ce (cerium) or nano-TiO2films with Fe (ferium), which are used to degradate azo dye wastewater and present their characterization by XRD and HRTEM methods. The results show that proper amount of Ce or Fe doped into the nano-TiO2films can effectively accelerate the separation of photogenerated electrons-holes and easily form lattices, and consequently promotes nano-TiO2films' photocatalytic activity by nearly 20%.

Pure TiO2, Ce-doped and Ce/Si-codoped TiO2 nanoparticles with different Ce contents were synthesized by using a sol-gel-hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized samples were annealed at 400 °C. Their crystallization was investigated by Raman spectroscope. The result showed that Ce-doping and Ce-Si codoping decreased the crystallization. The interfacial and fractal properties were investigated by synchrotron radiation small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The results indicated that Ce-doping induced the Porod negative deviation, and the fractal properties showed TiO2 nanoparticles codoped by Ce-Si were rougher than these of the pure TiO2 and Ce-doped TiO2. This rough surface of the nanoparticles was helpful to improve the photocatalytic activity.
