Abstract In this study, friction stir welding of AA2014-O and AA2014-T6 aluminum alloy was performed at various welding speeds to evaluate the influence of temper conditions of base metal on the properties of the welded joints. The results showed strong influence of base metal temper conditions on the microstructural morphologies and mechanical behavior of the welded joints. In the 2014-O joints, different zones of weld joint were diffused into each other and there was no clear interface between them. In 2014-T6 joints, there was a distinct demarcation between the NZ, TMAZ, HAZ and base metal. The welded joints in 2014-O temper condition showed increase in hardness in the vicinity of weld center due to grain refinement whereas, in 2014-T6, softening occurred in the same region by the dissolution of strengthening precipitates. The mechanical properties of 2014-O joints were equivalent to the base metal showing a 100% weld efficiency with fracture located in the base metal, whereas 2014-T6 welds exhibited about 70% weld efficiency with fracture located at the NZ/TMAZ interface. All the samples in mechanical testing fractured at retreating side (RS) which exhibited heterogeneity in the mechanical properties of the welded joints. SEM fractographic analysis revealed a ductile fracture mode comprising of dimples in both temper conditions. The size and shape of the dimples was strongly dependent on base metal temper condition.

In this paper, a series of welding wires with ZrB2 particles were developed by the in situ reaction, and the ZrB2 particles were successfully introduced into the spray-formed 7055 aluminum alloy welded joints by TIG welding. The microstructure, hardness, and tensile strength of the welded joints were tested by metallographic microscope, SEM, EDS, Vickers hardness tester, and tensile testing machine. The results show that the microstructure of ZrB2/7055 welded joints is fine dendrites. The hardness of the weld zone of the ZrB2/7055 welded joint is higher than that of the 7055 welded joint. With the increase of ZrB2 particles’ content, the tensile strength of welded joints increases first and then decreases. When the content of ZrB2 particles is 1.5 wt.%, the tensile strength reaches the maximum value of 280 MPa. The tensile strength of the welded joint containing 1.5 wt.% ZrB2 particles is 14% higher than that of the pure 7055 aluminum alloy welded joint.

After different rolling conditions, four 7055 aluminum alloy samples with different precipitation sizes were measured by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and laser ultrasonic. The attenuation coefficients of ultrasound measured by laser ultrasonic were calculated in the time domain, frequency domain and wavelet denoising, respectively. The relationship between the precipitate size and attenuation coefficient was established. The results show that the attenuation of the ultrasonic wave is related to the size of the precipitated phase; this provides a new method for rapid non-destructive testing of the precipitation of aluminum alloys.
