Two chitosan silica hybrid materials were prepared by a two-step process in 78–84% yields using the homogeneous phase reaction of 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate with chitosan dissolved in 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid (∼10% w/w), which was followed by NH4OH catalyzed hydrolysis of triethoxysilyl groups and then sol-gel process. These new hybrid materials were shown to adsorb up to about 95% of Fe3+ from 5 × 10−4 M aqueous solution at room temperature in 24 h.

The organic ligand 2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) which was selected as molecular bridge for sensitization of europium and terbium ions were modified by 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propylisocyanate (TEPIC) to obtain the hybrid precursor TTA-Si. Then the solution of Eu(NO3)3 and Tb(NO3)3 were added in the presence of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The binary lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid material were obtained. The ternary hybrid materials were obtained by adding the solution of Eu(NO3)3 and Tb(NO3)3 and Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG400). We investigated the thermal stability and luminescence properties of hybrids and found that the ternary hybrid materials exhibit better thermal stability and stronger emission intensity. Furthermore, compared with the binary mesoporous material Eu-(TTA-Si)3 and Tb-(TTA-Si)3, the ternary mesoporous material Eu-(TTA-Si)3-PEG and Tb-(TTA-Si)3-PEG exhibits the characteristic emission of the Eu3+ and Tb3+ ion with a higher luminescence intensity, suggesting that the introduction of PEG is of benefit for the sensitization of Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescence, by replacing H2O groups that can quench the luminescence of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions.

ABSTRACTFormation of hierarchical macropores and mesopores in ethylene-bridged polysilsesquioxane sol-gel systems via concurrent sol-gel transition and phase separation induced by the incorporation of supramolecular templats has been investigated. A series of poly(ethylene-glycol)-poly(propyleneglycol)- poly(ethyleneglycol) triblock copolymers, EOPOEOs, have been employed as supramolecular templates, while 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane was used as a polysilsesquioxane source. Successful combination of templated mesopores and well-defined macropores due to phase-separation has been found in the system with EOPOEOs having 70 PO units and respective 20 EO units. Although similar macroporous morphology has been obtained for all the EOPOEOs with EO chain longer or shorter than 20 units, the optimum composition for the co-continuous macropores and that for templated mesopores deviated from each other, resulting in the failure of producing hierarchical macropores and mesopores.
