We improved common metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) by integrating four embedded inductors or replacing four embedded capacitors in the same compact structure. The obtained results confirmed that the lumped-capacitors MPA maintains an extreme thickness t = λ/940, where λ is operating wavelength at 106.3 MHz. Besides, by replacing these capacitors by inductors in the initial designed-MPA structure, we obtained an effective thickness of t = λ/53 at 1.9 GHz. Furthermore, we explained the absorption mechanism in terms of the magnetic energy and power loss distributions related to the impedance-matching effect.

According to the communication demands of communication system used in the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) communication system, a ladder-shaped open-slotted antenna design is presented. The impedance effects and directional radiation performance of designed antenna are improved with adopting a pair of L-shaped narrow slot and a passive resonator among the antenna structures. The measured results show that the impedance bandwidth of the antenna is about 90%, the frequency range can cover from 3 GHz to 12 GHz, and the antenna has a relative small size just as 22 mm × 24 mm. The antenna is realized through adopting improved ground structure, and its electrical length is increased simultaneously. To improve its impedance matching effect, the ladder structure is adopted in the antenna. The measured results show that the proposed design scheme is useful and effective, the antenna size can be controlled within the size of 22 mm × 24 mm and the good impedance bandwidth can also be obtained, its frequency bandwidth is from 3 GHz to 13.2 GHz, and the designed antenna has good group delay characteristics at the same time.

As part of the Fp7 Clean Sky Project, a linear magnetic gear prototype, called Z-transmitter, for aerospace application was designed, built, and tested. It demonstrates a maximum force capacity of 4700 N at 25°C and 4500 N at 90°C. Force ratio between slow and fast stages remains constant and equal to the design value: 7.0. The behavior of the real Z-transmitter as a mechanical impedance matching device when any stiffness is attached to the fast stage including the limit cases of a blocked fast stage or a free to move fast stage is experimentally explored. Although the real Z-transmitter deviates from the ideal, frictionless and massless, device, it still provides an impedance matching effect large enough to potentially become an extremely useful technology for vibration control when combined with other elements such as dampers, springs, or active elements.
