In this paper, we have extended and deepened the study on fractional order phase transition (FPT) of a charged AdS black hole. We have carried out a detailed analysis of FPT for several AdS black hole prototypes: black hole surrounded by quintessence background, 5D Gauss-Bonnet, D dimensional RN-AdS BH, and lastly Kerr black holes. We have shown that the 4/3 order FPT at critical points holds for the first three black holes systems, while for Kerr black holes, the fractional order is rather 1/3. These results suggest two remarkable features: Firstly 4/3 order phase transition can be assumed for asymptotically AdS black holes spherical solutions; secondly the fractional order is not universal and can be affected by the geometric symmetry.

AbstractSome ones have showed the first-order phase transition of the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) AdS black holes has unique characters from other AdS black holes. While the coexistence zone of the first-order phase transition was not exhibited. As well known the coexistence curve of a black hole carries a lot of information about black hole, which provides a powerful diagnostic of the thermodynamic properties on black hole. We study the first-order phase transition coexistence curves of the HL AdS black holes by the Maxwell’s equal-area law, and give the boundary of two-phase coexistence zone. It is very interesting that the first-order phase transition point is determined by the pressure F on the surface of the HL AdS black hole’s horizon, instead of only the pressure P (or the temperature T). This unique property distinguishes the HL AdS black hole from the other AdS black hole systems. Furthermore, this black hole system have the critical curves, and on which every point stands for a critical point.

In this paper, we investigate the Joule–Thomson effects of AdS black holes with a global monopole. We study the effect of the global monopole parameter [Formula: see text] on the inversion temperature and isenthalpic curves. The obtained result is compared with Joule–Thomson expansion of van der Waals fluid, and the similarities were noted. Phase transition occuring in the extended phase space of this black hole is analogous to that in van der Waals gas. Our study shows that global monopole parameter [Formula: see text] plays a very important role in Joule–Thomson expansion.

Abstract Via both numerical and analytical methods, we build the holographic s-wave insulator/superconductor model in the five-dimensional AdS soliton with the Horndeski correction in the probe limit and study the effects of Horndeski parameter k on the superconductor model. For the fixed mass squared of the scalar field ($$m^2$$m2), the critical chemical potential $$\mu _c$$μc increases with the larger Horndeski parameter k, which means that the increasing Horndeski correction hinders the superconductor phase transition. Meanwhile, above the critical chemical potential, the obvious pole arises in the low frequency of the imaginal part of conductivity, which signs the appearance of superconducting state. What is more, the energy of quasiparticle excitation decreases with the larger Horndeski correction. Furthermore, the critical exponent of the condensate (charge density) is $$\frac{1}{2}$$12 (1), which is independent of the Horndeski correction. In addition, the analytical results agree well with the numerical results. Subsequently, the conductor/superconductor model with Horndeski correction is analytically realized in the four- and five-dimensional AdS black holes. It is observed that the increasing Horndeski correction decreases the critical temperature and thus hinders the superconductor phase transition, which agrees with the numerical result in the previous works.

We discuss the P−V criticality and phase transition in the extended phase space of anti-de Sitter(AdS) black holes in four-dimensional Rastall theory and recover the Van der Waals (VdW) analogy of small/large black hole (SBH/LBH) phase transition when the parameters ωs and ψ satisfy some certain conditions. Later, we further explore the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless scalar perturbations to probe the SBH/LBH phase transition. It is found that it can be detected near the critical point, where the slopes of the QNM frequencies change drastically in small and large black holes.
