Basing on the study of adsorption behavior of glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxy-silane (GTMS), pretreatment method of AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy for sol-gel films was optimized. The morphology, composition and corrosion protective performance of alloy coated with the films were investigated by using FE-SEM, EDS, AFM and EIS. The results showed that the Al matrix exhibited better ability to adsorb GTMS molecules than the second phase particles, especially at lower concentration of GTMS. Further, the 5% GTMS films cover the whole surface, but the selective adsorption behaviors still exist. It was concluded that less second phase particles and smoother surface were benefit to the sol-gel films on aluminum alloy. Depending on this conclusion, the pretreatment method for sol-gel films was optimized. The optimized surface condition conducted with 50 g•L-1 sodium hydroxide and ultrasound at 60 oC for 30 s was obtained. These samples coated with the sol-gel films revealed good anti-corrosion performance. The coverage degree of the films was up to 97.95 %.

ABSTRACTBackscattering spectrometry has been used to determine the density of TiO2 sol-gel films. The density of the as-deposited films relative to that of anatase varies slightly with respect to deposition conditions and is approximately 0.5. Annealing at temperatures as high as 750°C increases the relative density to 0.7 with concomitant decreases in the O:Ti ratio and H content but it does not result in complete densification. Film densities are consistently higher for films annealed under dynamic vacuum compared to those in air.

This work is concerned with the investigation of the capability of alumina coatings, deposited over aluminum alloy by dip coating methods to improve mechanical properties. Alumina coatings were deposited using oxime-modified aluminum (III) isopropoxide as a sol-gel precursor. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) images of the coated samples suggest deposition of uniform and crack free alumina coatings. The mechanical property of the bare, and dip coated aluminum alloy were investigated by the slow strain rate test in 3.5% of NaCl solution. The coated sample indicate higher ultimate tensile strength, it’s reflect the protective behavior of coating.

Silicate-based hybrid coatings were deposited on aluminum alloy substrates following the methodology of sol-gel procedure and are applying to survey the corrosion protective behavior. The results show that the optimal intact and uniform film can be obtained by preparing with Si:Al mole ratio 48:1 and tempering at 140°C. It was noted that this modified hybrid coating reduced the corrosion current density from 1.532×10-4A/cm2 (bare substrate) to 2.782×10-8 A/cm2 in 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The coating represents an excellent stability, especially at higher temperature, therefore could offer a significant protection to 2024 aluminum alloy substrates.

Control over crystallographic orientation in thin films is important, particularly with highly anisotropic structures. Because of its ferroelectric nature, the layered perovskite La2Ti2O7 has interesting piezoelectric and electrooptic properties that may be exploited when films are highly textured. Sol-gel films with an orientation factor of greater than 95% were fabricated without relying on epitaxial (lattice-matching) growth from the substrate. Film orientation and crystallization were confirmed by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and optical measurements. The particle sizes in all precursor solutions were measured by dynamic light scattering experiments. Experimental results indicate that film orientation is a function of precursor solution concentration, size of the molecular clusters in the solution, and film thickness.
