Abstract Background With the population aging worldwide, adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) is receiving increased attention. Frailty, instead of chronological age, is used for assessing the patient’s overall physical condition. In ADS patients undergoing a posterior approach, long-segment corrective surgery, the association of frailty with the postsurgical outcomes remains undefined. Methods ADS patients who underwent a posterior approach, long-segment fusion at the Department of Orthopedics, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University (CMU), Beijing, China, in 2014–2017 were divided into the frailty and non-frailty groups according to the modified frailty index. Major postoperative complications were recorded, including cardiac complications, pneumonia, acute renal dysfunction, delirium, stroke, neurological deficit, deep wound infection, gastrointestinal adverse events, and deep vein thrombosis. Radiographic measurements and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) parameters were recorded preoperatively and at 2 postoperative years. Results A total of 161 patients were included: 47 (29.2%) and 114 (70.8%) in the frailty and non-frailty groups, respectively. Major postoperative complications were more frequent in the frailty group than the non-frailty group (29.8% vs. 10.5%, P = 0.002). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that frailty was independently associated with major complications (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12–6.89, P = 0.028). Radiographic and HRQOL parameters were improved at 2 years but with no significant between-group differences. Conclusions Frailty is a risk factor for postoperative complications in ADS after posterior single approach, long-segment corrective surgery. Frailty screening should be applied preoperatively in all patients to optimize the surgical conditions in ADS.

Aspect-based sentiment analysis has been studied in both research and industrial communities over recent years. For the low-resource languages, the standard benchmark corpora play an important role in the development of methods. In this article, we introduce two benchmark corpora with the largest sizes at sentence-level for two tasks: Aspect Category Detection and Aspect Polarity Classification in Vietnamese. Our corpora are annotated with high inter-annotator agreements for the restaurant and hotel domains. The release of our corpora would push forward the low-resource language processing community. In addition, we deploy and compare the effectiveness of supervised learning methods with a single and multi-task approach based on deep learning architectures. Experimental results on our corpora show that the multi-task approach based on BERT architecture outperforms the neural network architectures and the single approach. AbstractThe resources generated by the GTEx consortium offer unprecedented opportunities to advance our understanding of the biology of human diseases. Here, we present an in-depth examination of the phenotypic consequences of transcriptome regulation and a blueprint for the functional interpretation of genome-wide association study-discovered loci. Across a broad set of complex traits and diseases, we demonstrate widespread dose-dependent effects of RNA expression and splicing. We develop a data-driven framework to benchmark methods that prioritize causal genes and find no single approach outperforms the combination of multiple approaches. Using colocalization and association approaches that take into account the observed allelic heterogeneity of gene expression, we propose potential target genes for 47% (2519 out of 5385) of the GWAS loci examined.

Abstract The article describes the application of a new stochastic inversion of the deep-azimuthal resistivity data, independent from the tool vendor. The new model was performed on the data from several wells of the PAO «Novatek», that were drilled using deep-azimuthal resistivity tools of two service companies represented in the global oilfield services market. This technology allows to respond in a timely manner when the well approaches the boundaries with contrasting resistivity properties and to avoid exit to unproductive zones. Nowadays, the azimuthal resistivity data is the method with the highest penetration depth for the geosteering in real time. Stochastic inversion is a special mathematical algorithm based on the statistical Monte Carlo method to process the readings of resistivity while drilling in real time and provide a geoelectrical model for making informed decisions when placing horizontal and deviated wells. Until recently, there was no unified approach to calculate stochastic inversion, which allows to perform calculations for various tools. Deep-azimuthal resistivity logging tool vendors have developed their own approaches. This article presents a method for calculating stochastic inversion. This approach was never applied for this kind of azimuthal resistivity data. Additionally, it does not depend on the tool vendor, therefore, allows to compare the data from various tools using a single approach.

Participatory ergonomics is an idea whose time has come! There are many approaches which have been utilized by organizations to improve productivity and enhance quality of work life. Participation itself is not a new idea, but because of current organizational and environmental forces for change, new organizational philosophies are emerging which are developed, designed, and operated with participation of the employees concerned and which do result in improved organizational effectiveness and quality of work life. Organizations in the turbulent environments of today must be able to quickly adapt to conditions of change. Many major forces for change have emerged which significantly impact managerial philosophies and behaviors. In this decade, in fact, the rules of business have changed drastically and permanently. Market conditions, foreign competition, and high growth markets are major forces in today's environment along with societal values, composition of the labor force, type of product, and the general business environment itself. An effective approach to management would suggest that it address these forces for change in order to adapt and succeed. No single approach utilizing participatory techniques is universally effective: a contingency approach is advocated. Basic assumptions underlying a contingency model include the notion that no single approach will be effective under all circumstances, and that most approaches utilized today will be effective under a certain set of conditions. It appears that some form of participative management meets current needs primarily because it best suits the labor force, today's technologies, and current societal conditions. The major participative management approaches discussed include quality circles (currently the most popular), job enrichment strategies, cooperative union-management quality of work life programs, gainsharing plans, and the development and operation of self-managing work teams. Also discussed is an emerging innovation in participative management, use of the parallel organization. There are other methods available, to be sure, but these appear to be the principal participative approaches of today. Most participatory approaches and techniques are not new. What is new and very important is the commitment on the part of the organization to adopt what may become organization-wide change strategies through the use of participatory management strategies. The ultimate goal, of course, is to achieve improved organizational effectiveness, product quality, and enhanced quality of work life.
