This paper analyzes the technical and economic viability and sustainability of urban street lighting installation projects using equipment powered by photovoltaic (PV) energy. First, a description of the state-of-the-art of the technology is performed, studying the components involved in solar LED luminaires for street lighting application and examples of autonomous PV systems installed in different countries. Later, a case study a based on a renovation project of the street lighting installation at a 5000-inhabitant municipality in Lanzarote (Spain) is presented. Two alternatives are analyzed: underground channeling of the previous aerial electrical grid and the installation of LED luminaires, and, on the other hand, the installation of autonomous LED solar luminaires. Simulations concluded that a PV lighting installation proposal guarantees the existing M3 lighting requirements (EN 13201-2:2015) and represents a saving in the material execution budget of 43.78% with respect to the channeled power grid option. Finally, a statistical study has been carried out to assess the social acceptance of Spanish citizens of this autonomous PV technology in urban environments. This considers strengths and weakness of the technology: sustainability, robustness, visual impact, or risk of vandalism. In general, most subjects of all age segments are aware of the problem that means having aerial wiring running at facades (95%) and considers the use of PV in urban lighting sustainable (88%). However, 47% of those surveyed consider that shutdowns due to lack of energy harvesting is problematic and 17% consider this very problematic. This major drawback (visual impact of PV equipment is mostly evaluated as neutral) gives rise to social reluctance, especially in people younger than 50 who remarked this as more problematic than senior segments. Thus, guaranteed operational service is fundamental to have social agreement for PV technology implementation.

Rapid urbanization is a worldwide critical environmental challenge. With this urban migration soaring, we need to live far more efficiently than we currently do by incorporating the natural world in new and innovative ways. There are a lot of researches on ecological, architectural or aesthetic points of view to address this issue. We present a novel approach to assess the visual impact of vegetation in urban street pedestrian view with the assistance of computer vision metrics. We statistically evaluate the correlations of the amount of vegetation with objective computer vision traits such as Fourier domain, color histogram, and estimated depth from monocular view. We show that increasing vegetation in urban street views breaks the orthogonal symmetries of urban blocks, enriches the color space with fractal-like symmetries and decreases the cues of projective geometry in depth. These uncovered statistical facts are applied to predict the requested amount of vegetation to make urban street views appear like natural images. Interestingly, these amounts are found in accordance with the ecosystemic approach for urban planning. Also, the study opens new questions for the understanding of the link between geometry and depth perception.

In the 1970s, the fragile historical centre of the city of Perugia was a key area where the binomial of sustainable mobility and urban regeneration was developed and applied. At the turn of the xxi century, the low carbon automatic people-mover Minimetrò broadened that application from the city's historical centre to the outskirts, promoting the enhancement of several urban environments. This paper is the outcome of an investigation of original sources, field surveys and direct interviews, which addresses the Minimetrò as the backbone of a wide regeneration process which has had a considerable impact on the economic development of a peripheral area of the city which was previously devoid of any clear urban sense. The conclusion proposes some solutions to improve the nature of the Minimetrò as an experimental alternative means of transport.

Considerable effort is expended measuring pasture parameters that relate to animal perform mance. Traditionally farmers have used visual impact and experience as their method of pasture assessment to make management decisions. The simplest measurement collected by researchers, pasture height, is developed to the point where it can be used as a guide to predict pasture mass and animal performance. This paper presents relationships between height and mass for improved pastures in summer dry North Island hill country. A pasture 5cm tall will give hogget growth of 60 gjday in summer, 90 in autumn, 100 in winter and 200 in spring. Similarly 5cm will be 2250 kg DM/ha in summer, 1900 in autumn, 1520 in winter, 1640 in spring and 2200 in late spring.
