Metal(loid) soil pollution resulting from past and present mine activities is a serious environmental and health issues worldwide. Therefore, the remediation of those polluted areas has been a growing research interest over the last decades, especially the assisted phytoremediation. In this study, a pot experiment was set up, using a former mine technosol, highly polluted by As and Pb, to which biochar, activated carbon, or ochre was applied, alone or in combination to clover green amendment. Following amendment application, Populus x. canescens cuttings were planted. Results showed that all four amendments reduced soil acidity. However only the first three amendments immobilized As and Pb, while the green amendment drastically mobilized those two pollutants and none of the amendments improved plant growth. In conclusion, the association of clover green amendment to biochar, activated carbon, or ochre did not appear as an efficient remediation strategy in this case; although the aging of the amendments and degradation of the green amendment in the soil with time could have positive outcomes.

Soil pollution with plastics represents a great threat to plants, animals, but especially to humans, as a very small quantity of the plastic which is discarded daily is recycled or incinerated in waste facilities, much of it reaching landfills where their decomposition lasts up to 1000 years and during this time the toxic substances penetrate the soil and the water. If, initially, the pollution with plastics has been identified and recognized in the aquatic environment, recent studies show that plastics residues exist in huge quantities in the soil. The present study focuses on the analysis of factors that pollute soil, so the various studies that have been carried out claim that soil pollution with plastic is much higher and increases in an aggressive manner, being estimated to be 4 to 23 times higher than water pollution with plastics, and the accumulation of microplastics in the soil has a negative impact on soil biota. Thus, once the plastic material accumulates in the soil, it is assimilated to organic matter and the mineral substitutes of the soil and persists for several hundred years.


This book, based on research carried out at the Academia Sinica over the past 30 years, explains the basic difference between the variable charge soils of tropical and subtropical regions, and the constant charge soils of temperate regions. It will focus on the chemical properties of the variable charge soils--properties which have important bearing on soil management practices, including maximizing soil productivity and combating soil pollution.
