This study discusses how personal knowledge management in Jabodetabek urban community (stand for Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) in Indonesia, as a multi-ethnic nation with a thick oral culture is facing the digital era. The urgency of this research is to be able to build awareness and managing knowledge effectively in society. This research uses quantitative approach with case study method. Data is collected using the Google-form questionnaire between January-July 2018. Respondents are determined by non-probability sampling methods, obtained 224 respondents. The findings show that the strategy of gaining knowledge is at the highest level, while knowledge sharing is at the lowest level. In addition, the community has not fully utilized knowledge in this digital era. They focus on knowledge about hobbies, entertainment, and health. It was concluded that individuals who, on average, were students and office workers, showed effectiveness of knowledge management that were not optimally integrated, thus hampering the development of knowledge itself. Ideally individuals actively share knowledge for mutual progress, Jabodetabek communities are still passive, and sharing knowledge in close environment that are related to school or office assignments. This issue can be developed using a qualitative approach in order to gain deeper understanding of personal knowledge management from cultural perspective.

Extensive efforts have been made in pedestrian evacuation of urban rail transit systems, since there has emerged an increasing number of congestion problems. However, few studies focus on the comprehensive urban rail transit hubs. As a comprehensive interchange hub integrating urban railway and intercity railway lines, Beijing West Railway Station was taken as a case study object. The pedestrian evacuation characteristics were analysed first. Then, a social force-based simulation model of Beijing West Railway Station was constructed in PTV Viswalk. The model was applied to visually display a real evacuation process and help identify evacuation bottlenecks. The results showed that the risk points at different facilities had various causes and features. Furthermore, the simulation model could also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of different optimization measures as long as certain model parameters were changed beforehand.

The Landscape Law, introduced in Japan in 2004, has granted the municipal governments the regulatory power to protect cultural landscape they wish to preserve. Due to its wider coverage, the law can technically protect the landscape developed through the secondary and tertiary industries, which theoretically includes the urban cultural landscape. However, until today, no significant cultural landscape is officially designated in its capital city Tokyo, although, such urban neighborhoods with historic sense of place still exist and are highly appreciated. By examining the fifteen-year community’s effort to preserve roji (alleys) and its landscape in Kagurazaka in central Tokyo as a case study, this paper aims to examine the achievement and limitation of the community’s advocacy efforts. In conclusion, this urban community has rather viewed its landscape as a favorable living environment than cultural resources, while the academic research recognized it as historic resource and urban cultural landscape. To better preserve the urban landscape as living environment with authenticity of the place, two approaches need to be combined in the future.

This issue has led to the implementation of Safe City Programme in Malaysia as to strengthening the urban community safety. In Malaysia, Shah Alam City has been declared as the first Safe City in this country. However, this recognition is arguable due to its crime rates, which is found higher compared with other cities. In fact, crime rates appear to be common indicator among the urban community for measuring the urban safety. Therefore, a case study has been carried out in Shah Alam residential area as to have better understanding about the concept of Safe City Programme and its effectiveness towards community safety. The evaluation is based on the community perception in which, gathered from indepth interview. It is found that the respective local authority is highly relied on the physical environment that is believed to be effective in preventing crime. On the other hand, the physical factor has brought less effect to the community, but they have come up with their own safety strategies through numerous social activities as to combat crime at their place. Key words: Safety; safe city; crime; CPTED; residential
