Many endurance athletes perform specific blocks of training in hot environments in “heat stress training camps.” It is not known if physiological threshold heart rates measured in temperate conditions are reflective of those under moderate environmental heat stress. A total of 16 endurance-trained cyclists and triathletes performed incremental exercise assessments in 18°C and 35°C (both 60% relative humidity) to determine heart rates at absolute blood lactate and ventilatory thresholds. Heart rate at fixed blood lactate concentrations of 2, 3, and 4 mmol·L−1 and ventilatory thresholds were not significantly different between environments (P > .05), despite significant heat stress-induced reductions in power output of approximately 10% to 17% (P < .05, effect size = 0.65–1.15). The coefficient of variation for heart rate at these blood lactate concentrations (1.4%−2.9%) and ventilatory thresholds (2.3%−2.7%) between conditions was low, with significant strong positive correlations between measurements in the 2 environments (r = .92–.95, P < .05). These data indicate heart rates measured at physiological thresholds in temperate environments are reflective of measurements taken under moderate environmental heat stress. Therefore, endurance athletes embarking on heat stress training camps can use heart rate–based thresholds ascertained in temperate environments to prescribe training under moderate environmental heat stress.

The present study aimed to propose and assess the physiological responses of a novel graded karate test. Ten male national-level karate athletes (age 26 ± 5 yrs; body mass 69.5 ± 11.6 kg; height 1.70 ± 0.09 m) performed two exercise tests (separated by 2-7 days): 1) a running-based cardiopulmonary exercise test; 2) a graded karate test. The cardiopulmonary exercise test was comprised of an individualized ramp protocol for treadmill running, and the graded karate test was comprised of a sequence of ‘kisami-gyaku-zuki” punching at a fixed frequency of a stationary target that becomes progressively distant. Cardiorespiratory responses, blood lactate concentration, and perceived exertion were measured. A verification phase was also performed in both tests to confirm the maximal physiological outcomes. The graded karate test evoked similar maximal responses to the running protocol: V̇O2 (57.4 ± 5.1 vs 58.3 ± 3.5 mL·kg-1·min-1; p = 0.53), heart rate (192 ± 6 vs 193 ± 10]beats.min-1; p = 0.62) and blood lactate (14.6 ± 3.4 vs 13.1 ± 3.0 mmol·L-1; p = 0.14) with a shorter duration (351 ± 71 vs 640 ± 9 s; p < 0.001). Additionally, the graded karate test evoked higher V̇O2 (72.6 ± 6.5 vs 64.4 ± 4.3 %V̇O2MAX; p = 0.005) and heart rate (89.4 ± 4.6 vs 77.3 ± 7.2 %HRMAX p < 0.001) at the ventilatory threshold and a higher heart rate (97.0 ± 2.4 vs 92.9 ± 2.2 %HRMAX; p = 0.02) at the respiratory compensation point. Incremental and verification phases evoked similar responses in V̇O2 and minute-ventilation during both tests. This novel displacement-based sport-specific test evoked similar maximal and higher submaximal responses, indicating a superior pathway to assess karate athletes.

Com este estudo objetivou-se avaliar as alterações da concentração de lactato sanguíneo e determinar o V4 de cavalos da raça Árabe submetidos ao teste de exercício progressivo em esteira de alta velocidade. Onze eqüinos adultos foram submetidos a um período de condicionamento e ao teste de exercício progressivo em esteira de alta velocidade. Nas condições em que foi realizado o experimento foi possível concluir que o protocolo de exercício proposto para aplicação do teste padrão de exercício progressivo, mostrou-se eficaz na indução de respostas metabólicas e fisiológicas para várias intensidades de exercício de cavalos da raça Árabe durante o trabalho físico em esteira de alta velocidade. As concentrações de lactato sanguíneo elevam-se exponencialmente a partir da velocidade de exercício de 8,0m/s, determinada como o V4 para o presente estudo. Blood concentration of lactate and determination of V4 in Arabian horses during a incremental exercise test performed at a high-speed treadmill Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the blood lactate concentrations and to determine the V4 in Arabian horses, submitted to incremental exercise test performed on a high-speed treadmill. Eleven adult horses underwent a conditioning period as well as incremental exercise test performed on a high-speed treadmill. Under the circumstances that the experiment was developed, it was possible to conclude that the results obtained during the incremental exercise test were useful to assess the horse’s metabolic capability. The blood lactate levels exponentially increase beyond the speed of 8.0 m/s, determined as the V4 for this study.
