AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate proximate mechanisms of natal dispersal by female horses, Equus caballus (i.e. proximate causes and the factors influencing the timing), and to test predictions from two functional hypotheses: the intrasexual competition hypothesis, and inbreeding avoidance. The data concerned 40 individuals born between 1974-1985 in a closely monitored herd which developed a natural social structure during this period. All the females dispersed from their natal groups; none became solitary; 80% transferred to existing harems, the others formed new groups with bachelor stallions. Abduction by stallions affected only a quarter of the females whose transfers were observed. The results of this study do not support the hypothesis that a function of natal dispersal is to reduce intrasexual competition. The young females were not expelled by resident females of their natal groups, and did not, as a rule, experience increased aggression from these females before emigration. Their social bonds with members of their natal groups showed no progressive weakening prior to departure, and there was no gradual strengthening of bonds with individuals in the groups to which they transferred. There was no evidence for reproductive competition between the young females and resident mares of their natal groups, since the young females always refused the sexual approaches by males of these groups. Finally, age at dispersal did not decrease with the number of resident females in the groups they left. In contrast, as predicted by the inbreeding avoidance hypothesis, the primary cause of dispersal appeared to be sexual attraction to unfamiliar males. When in oestrus and before dispersing, the young females accepted matings only with males of other groups in spite of frequent sexual approaches by males of their natal groups (normally close relatives). In addition, none dispersed before first oestrus, and most did so during an oestrous period, at or before the conception of their first foal. The mothers of most young females interposed themselves when close kin males of the natal group approached their daughters sexually; this could contribute to the avoidance of close inbreeding. Among the other factors examined, some did not influence dispersal of the young females : they experienced low levels of aggression by adult stallions of their natal groups, particularly at the time of departure; their weight and body condition had no significant effects on leaving age nor did their mother's rank, the number of siblings, or the birth of another. In contrast, as the number of groups and the breeding sex ratio increased, dispersal age declined, occurring at a median age of 23 months (range 12-42 months) in the later years, when the herd had developed a natural social system.

<p>Sex ratio imbalances in wild bird populations have been a challenge for wildlife managers for decades. Differences between sexes during natal dispersal has long been thought to promote sex ratio imbalances. Natal dispersal distances may differ between sexes because of competition for food and space, or intrasexual competition and aggression. I investigated natal dispersal and intrasexual competition as mechanisms for a sex ratio imbalance in a small, translocated population of a New Zealand honeyeater, the bellbird (Anthornis melanura) in the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary- Zealandia, Wellington, New Zealand. I analysed long term records of population size and structure to document annual variation in sex ratios since the reintroduction of bellbirds to Zealandia. Radio telemetry was used to track the 2008/2009 cohort of bellbirds for five months after fledging to observe movements and distances travelled from their hatching location. Observations at a supplemental food source that was used by both adults and fledglings, were used to study intrasexual competition and aggression. Dispersal distances did not differ between the sexes for any of the measurement types used. Males did however significantly dominate the use of a supplemental food source and were significantly more aggressive around this food source, which is most likely responsible for the lower feeding rate among females. Therefore, I conclude that the sex ratio imbalance in the bellbird population in Zealandia may not result from a difference in natal dispersal, but from males dominating a supplemental food source, raising their population and fitness over that of females.</p>

The form, function, and prevalence of intrasexual competition is expected to differ for single and partnered women. For single women focused on the identification and recruitment of desirable mates, competition increases access to potential partners. For partnered women focused on the maintenance of current relationships, competition reduces the risk of infidelity and relationship dissolution. This chapter considers the specific threats experienced by single and partnered women, the extent to which these threats may impact on willingness to engage in intrasexual competition, and the competitive tactics employed. Additional factors influencing women’s engagement in intrasexual competition such as age and mating system type are also discussed.

The absence of a conceptual terminology, sufficiently developed and widely accepted in the Russian literature, significantly hinders progress in the field of reproductive biology of diatoms, restricts communication and debate, prevents training and transfer of knowledge. The present work is an attempt, based on world literature and our own research experience, to summarize, systematize, add, and clarify the existing terms, concepts and definitions related to research which are focused on sex and sexual reproduction in diatoms. A glossary of key terms (more than 200, including synonyms) is provided. Terms refer to diatom reproductive biology, life cycles, fertilization, mating system, gender (including inheritance and determination of sex, as well as inheritance associated with sex). Contradictions between possible interpretations of certain terms are briefly discussed.
