Introduction: Previous epidemiological studies indicate an association between maternal exposure to air pollution and an increased risk of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. We analyzed the association between the occurrence of mild/severe and early-/late-onset preeclampsia (PE) and traffic-related air pollution (TRAP). Materials and Methods: Based on retrospective data, 50 pregnant women with PE were selected and matched with a control group of healthy pregnant women according to their age, parity, and number of fetuses. The total length of major roads around the women's home within a radius of 100, 200, 300, and 500 m and the distances from the domicile to the nearest ‘first class' main road and freeway were used as a proxy indicator of TRAP. We compared a PE subgroup and control group in terms of their exposure to TRAP. Results: Late-onset PE cases showed a significantly higher occurrence with density of major roads within a radius of 100-300 m compared to early onset cases (p = 0.006; 0.02; 0.04). In addition, a significantly shorter distance to the nearest ‘first class' main road was observed in late-onset PE cases (p = 0.0078). Conclusions: Exposure to TRAP during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk for the development of late-onset PE.

Maximum Entropy Spectral Analysis of the time series for the onset dates of the southwest monsoon over Kerala (India) revealed several periodicities significant at a 2a a priori level. some at a 3 C a  priori level However these contributed only 40-50% to the total variance thus indicating 50-60% as purely random component. Also many of the significant periodicities observed were in the QBO region (T = 2-3 years) which. due to their variable periodicities and amplitudes, are almost equivalent to a random component. Hence predictions were possible only with a  limit exceeding 5 days which are probably not very useful for any planning purposes agricultural or otherwise. No relationship was found between onset dates of established monsoon rainfall and the 50 hPa mean monthly equatorial zonal wind for the months of March, April, May or June. However there is a possibility that a relationship may exist between westerly (easterly) winds in May and early (late) onset of the first monsoon (or pre-monsoon ?) rainfall in Kerala. Meager or otherwise.

Background/Aims: Preeclampsia (PE) is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome involving varieties of cytokines, and previous studies have shown that IL-33 and its receptor IL-1RL1 play pivotal roles in the development of it. As a polygenetic hereditary disease, it is necessary to study the gene analysis for PE. Therefore, the present study was to determine whether IL-33 rs3939286 and IL-1RL1 rs13015714 associated with susceptibility to PE in Chinese Han women. Methods: 1,031 PE patients and 1,298 controls were enrolled and the genotyping for rs3939286 in IL-33 and rs13015714 in IL-1RL1 was performed by TaqMan allelic discrimination real-time PCR. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) was examined to ensure the group representativeness and Pearson's chi-square test was used to compare the differences in genetic distributions between the two groups. Results: No significant differences in genotypic and allelic frequencies of the two polymorphisms loci were observed between cases and controls. There were also no significant differences in genetic distributions between mild/severe and early/late-onset PE and control groups. Conclusion: Although our data suggested that the polymorphisms of IL-33 rs3939286 and IL-1RL1 rs13015714 might not be critical risk factors for PE in Chinese Han women, the results need to be validated in different nations.
