Spermatogenesis in rats was interrupted by local X-irradiation, heat or ligation of the testicular efferent ducts. A significant and specific rise in the serum level of FSH occurred 5–8 days after ligation of the efferent ducts, reaching twice the value observed in shamoperated controls by 21 days after the operation. After the testes were heated to 43 °C for 30 min, the serum levels of both LH and FSH were raised within 3 days and remained so up to 50 days after treatment. After X-irradiation, no changes in the concentration of FSH were observed in the first 21 days after treatment, but the serum levels of both gonadotrophins were increased at 49 days. By comparing the relative increases in the concentrations of FSH and LH after germ cell damage with those occurring after castration, it was evident that testicular androgens could account for only part of the normal feedback control of FSH secretion; at least one third of the inhibition of FSH secretion appeared to be due to non-androgenic sources, presumably 'inhibin'.

Tight control of raw green liquor total titratable alkali (TTA) may be considered an important first step towards improving the overall economic performance of the causticizing process. Dissolving tank control is made difficult by the fact that the unknown smelt flow is highly variable and subject to runoff. High TTA variability negatively impacts operational costs through increased scaling in the dissolver and transfer lines, increased deadload in the liquor cycle, under- and over-liming, increased energy consumption, and increased maintenance. Current practice is to use feedback control to regulate the TTA to a target value through manipulation of weak wash flow while simultaneously keeping dissolver density within acceptable limits. Unfortunately, the amount of variability reduction that can be achieved by feedback control alone is fundamentally limited by the process dynamics. One way to improve upon the situation would be to measure the smelt flow and use it as a feedforward control variable. Direct measurement of smelt flow is not yet possible. The use of an indirect measurement, the dissolver vent stack temperature, is investigated in this paper as a surrogate feedforward variable for dissolving tank TTA control. Mill trials indicate that significant variability reduction in the raw green liquor TTA is possible and that the control improvements carry through to the downstream processes.

ABSTRACT Electrolytic lesions were placed in the anterior hypothalamus of 3–4 day-old female rats; vaginal opening was hastened in comparison with blank-operated littermates in 12 of 17 rats bearing a lesion in the basal supra-and post-chiasmatic area. In the animals with the earliest vaginal opening, lesions reached upward towards the region of the anterior commissure and the paraventricular nuclei. The degree of advancement of puberty in rats operated at the age of 3 or 4 days was similar to that caused by lesions made at 10, 14 or 15 days. This finding suggests that the effect of a lesion upon gonadotrophin secretion does not begin to take place until after the age of at least two weeks.

ABSTRACT Drugs able to mimic or to antagonize the action of catecholamines have been implanted bilaterally into the basomedial region of the amygdala of adult castrated female rats. The animals were killed at different intervals after the implantation of the different drugs, and serum levels of LH and FSH were measured by radioimmunoassay. The results have shown that the intra-amygdalar implantation of the alpha-adrenergic blocker phenoxybenzamine induces a significant increase of the release both of LH and FSH. The implantation of the beta-adrenergic blocker propranolol brings about a rise of LH only. The dopamine receptor blocker pimozide stimulates the release of LH and exerts a biphasic effect (stimulation followed by inhibition) of FSH secretion. The alpha-receptor stimulant clonidine and the dopaminergic drug 2-Br-alpha-ergocryptine were without significant effects. From these observations it is suggested that the adrenergic signals reaching the basomedial area of the amygdala (possibly from the brain stem) may be involved in the modulation of gonadotrophin secretion.
