INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence affects more than 50 million people worldwide, it has a great impact on quality of life by affecting social, domestic, occupational and sex life, regardless of age. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of physical therapy treatment in women attending the Urogynecology service of Hospital and Maternity Leonor Mendes de Barros. METHOD: We retrospectively assessed 65 records of patients with diagnosis of urinary incontinence treated between November 2005 and November 2006. In order to have their data analyzed, patients were divided into two groups; group MF, which underwent medical treatment and physiotherapy, and group M, which had only medical treatment. In order to compare both groups' quantitative data, the analysis was performed in Statistica® software using Mann Whitney's non-parametric test. The analysis of association between the quantitative variables was performed through the Chi-Square test at 5% (p > 0.05) significance level. RESULTS: We observed that 60.6% of patients who underwent physical therapy treatment and medical treatment had the urinary incontinence symptoms decreased or completely cured, while 80% of women belonging to the medical treatmen only-group underwent surgery. CONCLUSION: Thus, we conclude that physical therapy is essential in treatment protocols of urinary incontinence outpatient clinics and to prevent surgery.

AbstractA study was carried out to make scientific assessment of the efficacy of homœopathic treatment for osteoarthropathy. One hundred and sixty patients with this diagnosis who were attending the Physical Medicine Unit (SMFR) of the IASERJ Central Hospital were included in the study which compared the combination of physical therapy and homœopathic treatment with one of physical therapy and conventional medical treatment, to determine the limits for improvement and their probable causes.Hypotheses were tested and revealed outstanding results to the effect that 92% of patients treated with physical medicine and homœopathy could be discharged. The results confirm that homœopathy used in conjunction with physical medicine gives more rapid and lasting results in cases of osteoarthropathy.

Edema is a common postoperative complication in mixed hemorrhoids. With the development of medical treatment, surgical improvement has greatly reduced surgical trauma to the body, but the issue of postoperative edema still exists. In order to explore the treatment progress of edema after surgery for mixed hemorrhoids, literatures on integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine for postoperative edema in hemorrhoids have been reviewed in hope to better understand the complication and provide reference for relevant clinical studies in the future.

Stroke patients are a major problem for their families because of the weight and limitations of recovery procedures. In this study, it is desired to show the benefits of virtual reality utilization both singularly and in tandem with the drug, namely the dual use of virtual realities and cerebrolysin. The aim of the study was to evaluate the overall functioning of patients diagnosed with stroke and their recovery. We compare patients who received drug treatment and physiotherapy and those who benefited from advanced physiotherapy (assisted by virtual reality) and drug treatment. The study group has a total of 42 participants (15 women and 27 men), of whom 22 received medical treatment and 20 underwent medical treatment and a virtual reality based physical therapy. The study also shows the starting point for rehabilitation respectively that how started rehabilitation prior to the 1-year mark and after the 1 year mark. The analysis was carried out over a period of 1.5 years in the hospital with a specially militarized status for the former patients and followers for a period of 1 years and seeing their evolution in several tests of: balance, posture, speed and assessment of the degree of functionality. The Health Improvement Analysis was done on these parameters and on the answers given in a clinical self-evaluation questionnaire. The physical therapy and exercise added to medical treatment play a considerable part in the recovery of overall functioning of patients with stroke.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate parents' reactions and understanding of diagnostic information from written reports and conferences in a clinic which provides multidisciplinary evaluations for children with speech, learning, language, and hearing problems. Previous studies and anecdotal reports suggested that many parents do not receive appropriate diagnostic information about their children. In the present study questionnaires were mailed to parents who had received reports of evaluations and most of whom had attended hour-long conferences covering the findings. Questionnaires were also sent to professionals who had received reports. Fifty-seven percent of the parents, and 63% of the professionals returned the questionnaires. Ninety percent of the parents indicated that they had understood the results as they were presented in the conference. Ninety-three percent of the professionals and 89% of the parents stated they understood the conclusions of the written reports .Further, 83% of the parents and 80% of the professionals reported that the findings had made a change in the child's educational or medical treatment. The percentage of parents who reported understanding the findings was greater than expected. The specific informing techniques used in this study are discussed.
