Use of pre-partum urine pH to predict the risk of milk fever in dairy cows

The objective of the experiment reported here was to compare the effects of a total mixed ration (TMR) with a pasture hay diet on the healthy transition from late gestation to early lactation of dairy cows with different body condition scores [BCS; 4.2 (thin) and 5.8 (fat) units on an 8-point scale]. It was hypothesised that providing the dietary cation-anion differences (DCAD) of the two diets were similar, more clinical and subclinical hypocalcaemia would be recorded in fat cows than in thin cows, and that this would not be affected by type of diet. The design of the experiment included 72 cows in a 2 × 2 factorial (two BCS × two types of diet fed for the 4 weeks before expected calving date) where cows were fed individually indoors before calving, and grazed pasture and fed concentrates after calving. The calculated DCAD of the two diets were similar (22.1 v. 18.4 meq/100 g DM for the hay and TMR diets) as were the precalving urine pH levels (7.73 and 7.74) of the cows. Intakes of hay and TMR during late gestation were on average 8.8 and 9.3 kg DM/cow.day, respectively, but the patterns of intake varied, with hay intake declining over the 3 weeks before calving and that of TMR remaining relatively constant until just before parturition. Cows fed hay had higher (P < 0.05) non-esterified fatty acid (0.90 v. 0.64 mmol/L), β-hydroxybutyrate (0.61 v. 0.43 mmol/L) and calcium (2.50 v. 2.24 mmol/L) concentrations, and lower (P < 0.05) glucose (3.03 v. 3.21 mmol/L) concentrations, than the cows fed the TMR before calving. Immediately after calving, most of these differences had disappeared. Average blood serum calcium concentrations within 12 h of calving were similar (P > 0.05) in cows fed each diet (1.94 and 1.79 mmol/L for hay and TMR, respectively). At calving, concentrations of serum calcium and urea were greater (P < 0.05) in the thin cows than the fat cows. Only fat cows had clinical hypocalcaemia (serum calcium concentrations <1.40 mmol/L) or needed to be treated for milk fever either at calving or in the week following calving, whereas there tended to be more thin cows with subclinical hypocalcaemia (serum calcium concentrations of 1.40–2.00 mmol/L). Subclinical ketosis (serum β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations of 1.00–3.00 mmol/L) was more prevalent in fat cows than in thin cows; otherwise health disorders were evenly spread across treatments. In the first 5 weeks of lactation, there were no significant (P > 0.05) effects of late gestation diet on any aspect of production. In contrast, there were positive (P < 0.05) effects of BCS on milk yield and concentrations of fat and protein in milk. The hypothesis concerning the amount and severity of hypocalcaemia in fat cows was only partially supported by the results, but type of diet had no effects on cow health or subsequent production.

Investigations on the liver function and its prognostic value were performed in dairy cows with hypocalcaemic paralysis. Among the 107 animals affected by milk fever 22 showed signs of liver insufficiency. In spite of the therapy indicated, 7 of these animals were not cured. The remaining 85 sick cows, which had showed a physiologic liver function, were cured after the first therapy was applied.

Rations with low to negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) given to dairy cows before calving reduce the risk of hypocalcaemia (milk fever). Different strategies for increasing forage DCAD were investigated in field trials in Central and Western Norway. Fertilisation with 70, 140 or 210 kg Cl per hectare as calcium chloride and low supply rates of K reduced DCAD in forage harvested at late developmental stages in spring growth of timothy and meadow fescue. The ideal negative DCAD was only attained on soils very low in plant available K. Timing (spring versus late spring) and source of Cl (CaCl2 versus MgCl2) were of no importance for the result. When pure stands of seven grasses were fertilised in spring either without chloride or with 140 kg chloride per hectare, the lowest values of DCAD after chloride fertilisation were found in perennial ryegrass and reed canary grass. By comparison, cocksfoot had equally high or higher Cl concentrations in its tissues, but accumulated more K, and seemed to be poorly suited for low DCAD forage production. It was concluded that Cl fertilisation is a more efficient means of controlling DCAD than sward species composition.

Calcium propionate is a safe and reliable food and feed additive. It can be metabolized and absorbed by humans and animals as a precursor for glucose synthesis. In addition, calcium propionate provides essential calcium to mammals. In the perinatal period of dairy cows, many cows cannot adjust to the tremendous metabolic, endocrine, and physiological changes, resulting in ketosis and fatty liver due to a negative energy balance (NEB) or milk fever induced by hypocalcemia. On hot weather days, cow feed (TMR or silage) is susceptible to mildew, which produces mycotoxins. These two issues are closely related to dairy health and performance. Perinatal period metabolic disease significantly reduces cow production and increases the elimination rate because it causes major glucose and calcium deficiencies. Feeding a diet contaminated with mycotoxin leads to rumen metabolic disorders, a reduced reproductive rate (increased abortion rate), an increased number of milk somatic cells, and decreased milk production, as well as an increased occurrence of mastitis and hoof disease. Propionic acid is the primary gluconeogenic precursor in dairy cows and one of the safest mold inhibitors. Therefore, calcium propionate, which can be hydrolyzed into propionic acid and Ca2+ in the rumen, may be a good feed additive for alleviating NEB and milk fever in the perinatal period of dairy cows. It can also be used to inhibit TMR or silage deterioration in hot weather and regulate rumen development in calves. This paper reviews the application of calcium propionate in dairy cows.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for measures offertility and several health disorders in dairy cows. Data consisted of 33732 records, of which 9163 were on heifers, on 305-day milk yield, health disorders and inseminations. Measures offertility were calculated from calving and insemination dates and included calving interval, days to first service and conception to first service. Health disorders included milk fever, mastitis and lameness. Genetic and phenotypic (co)variances were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood. Heritability estimates for both health disorders and fertility traits were low, ranging from 0·003 to 0·080. All genetic correlations between 305-day milk yield and health and fertility traits, in cows and heifers together, were antagonistic implying that selection for milk yield may have caused a deterioration in health and fertility. The unfavourable correlation between milk yield and health and fertility traits, plus the economic importance of the latter, suggests that future breeding goals should be expanded to include some health disorders and fertility.
