Thrust Vector Control by Secondary Gas Injection in Two-Dimensional Nozzles

When side force is produced by the injection of a secondary gas into the supersonic region of an axi-symmetric nozzle, the body shape of the obstruction caused by the secondary flow induces a cone-shaped separation region upstream of the port. From the apex of the cone a conical shock front is developed. Part of the total side force produced is due to the excess static pressure acting on the nozzle wall in (a) the separated region, and in (b) the wall area lying between the separated region and the trace of the shock on the nozzle wall. In such a field the static pressure is not uniform downstream of the shock but varies from point to point on the nozzle wall areas in question. This aspect of axi-symmetric flow makes attempts to correlate theoretical and experimental work difficult. It was considered that basic information about the important parameters, which influence side force, could best be obtained in experiments with two-dimensional nozzles. Here the circular secondary port is replaced by a rectangular port, the separation zone is wedge-shaped, the shock has a plane front, and in theory, the static pressure is uniform between the port and the point at which the boundary layer separates.

Summary:This work is concerned with the side force produced in rocket nozzles by secondary gas injection. A new theory for determining the side force is presented for two-dimensional flow and this is considered to be an important step towards a theory applicable to three-dimensional flow. The proposed theory is based on a double wedge model for the separated region upstream of the secondary port. The principal feature of the model is that it accounts tor the fact that the angle of the shock wave, originating from the separated region, is observed to increase with increase in secondary mass flow rate. Theoretical side force results are shown to compare favourably with experimental results obtained using two-dimensional nozzles and a comparison is made between the proposed theory and the theories of other workers.

Directional control of rockets can be achieved by using secondary gas jets for providing side forces. The present investigation is concerned with the fact that a greater side force can be achieved by expanding the secondary gas into the supersonic region of the main nozzle than by expanding it directly to atmosphere. A laboratory test rig using ambient temperature air for the primary and secondary flows is described. Axial thrust and side force were measured using strain gauge force transducers. The experiments were performed on a small axisymmetric main nozzle with a 10° semi-angle of divergence and with sonic injection through circular ports placed normal to the main nozzle axis. The investigations centred principally on the effects of (1) varying the secondary port size at a given axial location in the nozzle and of (2) varying the axial location of a port of constant diameter. Side force and axial thrust augmentation characteristics were obtained for a range of primary and secondary flow inlet pressures. The results show the relative importance of the parameters on which side force depends, the maximum side force that may be produced and the interdependence of axial thrust augmentation and side force.

We study the Magnus effect: deflection of the trajectory of a spinning body moving in a gas. It is well known that in rarefied gases, the inverse Magnus effect takes place, which means that the transversal component of the force acting on the body has opposite signs in sparse and relatively dense gases. The existing works derive the inverse effect from non-elastic interaction of gas particles with the body. We propose another (complementary) mechanism of creating the transversal force owing to multiple collisions of particles in cavities of the body surface. We limit ourselves to the two-dimensional case of a rough disc moving through a zero-temperature medium on the plane, where reflections of the particles from the body are elastic and mutual interaction of the particles is neglected. We represent the force acting on the disc and the moment of this force as functionals depending on ‘shape of the roughness’, and determine the set of all admissible forces. The disc trajectory is determined for several simple cases. The study is made by means of billiard theory, Monge–Kantorovich optimal mass transport and by numerical methods.

The flow inside rectangular and other cavities in a wall has been investigated at low subsonic velocities using oil flow and surface static-pressure distributions. Evidence has been found of regular three-dimensional flows in cavities with large span-to-chord ratios which would normally be considered to have two-dimensional flow near their centre-lines. The dependence of the steadiness of the flow upon the cavity's span as well as its chord and depth has also been observed.

ABSTRACT The new theoretical tire model for force and moment has been developed by considering a two-dimensional contact patch of a tire with rib pattern. The force and moment are compared with the calculation by finite element method (FEM). The side force predicted by the theoretical tire model is somewhat undervalued as compared with the FEM calculation, while the self-aligning torque predicted by the theoretical tire model agrees well with the FEM calculation. The shear force distribution in a two-dimensional contact patch under slip angle predicted by the proposed model qualitatively agrees with the FEM calculation. Furthermore, the distribution of the adhesion region and sliding region in a two-dimensional contact patch predicted by the theoretical tire model qualitatively agrees with the FEM calculation.

Abstract The intervertebral disc consists of a water-rich extra-cellular matrix which is synthesized and maintained by its cells. The disc is the largest avascular tissue in the body with its cells lying as much as 8mm away from the blood supply. Nutrients, essential for maintaining cellular viability, diffuse through the matrix from blood supply under a concentration gradient arising from cellular demand. The oxygen concentration gradients in the intervertebral disc are investigated to examine the effects of exchange area and disc thickness on oxygen flux in the disc. The concentration gradients are computed using the two-dimensional Poisson’s equation and measured values for oxygen consumption rate and oxygen diffusion.

In the dynamic point-to-point communication, to track and aim at antenna fast and accurately is the guarantee of high quality communication signal. In order to solve the problem of antenna alignment, we used the least square method (LSM) to fit the optimal level signal value (LSV) point which is based on coordinate coarse tracking alignment and matrix scanning strategy to find the LSV in this paper. Antenna is driven by two-dimensional turntable (azimuth and elevation angle (AE)): the two-dimensional turntable is decomposed into two independent one-dimensional turntables, and the LSV in AE direction are obtained by scanning, respectively. The optimal LSV point of two-dimensional turntable can be find by combing optimal LSV point of two independent one-dimensional turntables. The method has the advantages of high precision and easy implementation and can meet the requirement of fast and accurately alignment in dynamic point-to-point communication antenna engineering.

The present paper deals with the numerical and experimental investigation of the effect of return channel (RCH) dimensions of a centrifugal compressor stage on the aerodynamic performance. Three different return channel stages were investigated, two stages comprising three-dimensional (3D) return channel blades and one stage comprising two-dimensional (2D) RCH vanes. The analysis was performed regarding both the investigation of overall performance (stage efficiency, RCH total pressure loss coefficient) and detailed flow-field performance. For detailed experimental flow-field investigation at the stage exit, six circumferentially traversed three-hole probes were positioned downstream the return channel exit in order to get two-dimensional flow-field information. Additionally, static pressure wall measurements were taken at the hub and shroud pressure and suction side (SS) of the 2D and 3D return channel blades. The return channel system overall performance was calculated by measurements of the circumferentially averaged 1D flow field downstream the diffuser exit and downstream the stage exit. Dependent on the type of return channel blade, the numerical and experimental results show a significant effect on the flow field overall and detail performance. In general, satisfactory agreement between computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-prediction and test-rig measurements was achieved regarding overall and flow-field performance. In comparison with the measurements, the CFD-calculated stage performance (efficiency and pressure rise coefficient) of all the 3D-RCH stages was slightly overpredicted. Very good agreement between CFD and measurement results was found for the static pressure distribution on the RCH wall surfaces while small CFD-deviations occur in the measured flow angle at the stage exit, dependent on the turbulence model selected.

A theory is developed to describe the inviscid core in two-dimensional unstalled diffusers with suction (extraction) on the diverging walls. Experimental wall static pressure distributions and streamline patterns agree well with those predicted theoretically. Under appropriate extraction conditions, a stagnation region is located downstream of the diverging wall extraction station. Experimental verification of the streamline patterns and of the location of this stagnation region was achieved via hydrogen bubble visualization. In addition, the possible stall conditions, which result if improper extraction is employed, are described qualitatively.
