AbstractOne of the important problems in pulsar studies is to determine the magnetic inclination angle α, the intrinsic width of the radiation beam (2ρ) and the angle (α + β) between the observer's direction and the rotation axis. In this paper we solve this problem for individual pulses by using the observed pulse width (2Δ𝜙), the swing of polarization angle (2Δψ), and its central gradient (dψ/d𝜙)max.From the polar cap model we establish three basic geometrical relations, a complete set of equations from which explicit solutions can be obtained using the observed data. This is the first time that the orientation of pulsar emission is solved analytically solely on the basis of a geometrical model. However, the results are shown to be sensitively connected to the polarization-angle swing (2Δψ), which is not well measured for most pulsars. So the number of pulsars to which our method can be applied is limited. The importance of the measurement of Δψ is seen from our method. To ensure the credibility of our results, we have discussed the conditions to be satisfied by all reliable pulsar measurements. Our method is shown to be more favorable for pulsars with large pulse width 2Δ𝜙, large central gradient (dψ/d𝜙)max and large magnetic inclination angle α. Out of 120 pulsars (from Lyne and Manchester 1988), 40 are solvable, and 7 are believed to be reliable. We discuss our method for the determination of pulsar geometry in comparison with other methods.

ABSTRACT Approximately 8 per cent of the ∼2800 known pulsars exhibit ‘nulling,’ a temporary broad-band cessation of normal pulsar emission. Nulling behaviour can be coarsely quantified by the nulling fraction, which describes the percentage of time a given pulsar will be found in a null state. In this paper, we perform the most thorough statistical analysis thus far of the properties of 141 known nulling pulsars. We find weak, non-linear correlations between nulling fraction and pulse width, as well as nulling fraction and spin period which could be attributed to selection effects. We also further investigate a recently hypothesized gap at 40 per cent nulling fraction. While a local minimum does exist in the distribution, we cannot confirm a consistent and unique break in the distribution when we investigate with univariate and multivariate clustering methods, nor can we prove the existence of two statistically distinct populations about this minimum. Using the same methods, we find that nulling pulsars are a statistically different population from normal, radio, non-nulling pulsars, which has never been quantitatively verified. In addition, we summarize the findings of the prior nulling pulsar statistics literature, which are notoriously contradictory. This study, in context, furthers the idea that nulling fraction alone does not contain enough information to describe the behaviour of a nulling pulsar and that other parameters such as null lengths and null randomness, in addition to a better understanding of selection effects, are required to fully understand this phenomenon.

the problem of polarity effect in EDM is researched in this paper. In order to find out the deterioration of the anode and the cathode, the experiment with single pulse is taken in kerosene oil. We find the deterioration of the anode is larger than that of the cathode even in the condition of large pulse width. But this result is contradictory with that gotten in electric discharge machining with continue pulses. Through analyzing the movement of the electron and positive ion in plasma canal, we explain the phenomenon above rationally.

The exact distributions of gravity stresses are obtained within slopes of finite height inclined at various angles, −β (β = π/2, π/3, π/4, π/6, and π/8), to the horizontal. The solutions are obtained by application of the theory of a complex variable. In homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic slopes under plane strain conditions, the gravity stresses are independent of Young's modulus and are a function of (a) the coordinates, (b) the height, (c) the inclination angle, (d) Poisson's ratio or the coefficient of earth pressure at rest, and (e) the volumetric weight. Conformal applications that transform the planes of the various slopes studied onto the upper half-plane are analytically obtained. These solutions are also represented graphically.

In the present research the optimizing approach to the determination of the parameters of an inaccessible point of an object is developed. The common issues are revealed and essential steps of their resolution are identified. The essence of the problem is an objective contradiction between a requirement for the location of points A and B of the centers of the sighting tubes of optical devices in the same horizontal plane P1 and the lack of a real possibility to perform such to achieve this an identical one-level arrangement without error. The aim of the study is to develop strategies for determining the position of an inaccessible point of an object in the minimum domain between intersecting sighting rays as well as an adaptive algorithm for determining the values of the parameters of an inaccessible point under the given absolute and relative errors. To achieve this aim, the following problems are formulated and solved in the paper: 1. Develop strategies for determining the position of the inaccessible point of the object in the minimum domain between the intersecting sighting rays. 2. Develop an adaptive algorithm for determining the values of the parameters of an inaccessible point based on the specified absolute and relative errors. In the proposed optimizing approach, the three-dimensional geometrical model with crossed directional rays for the determination of coordinates of the inaccessible point of an object is developed. It is discussed that points С and C', coordinated of which to be determined, locates in domain [CDM, CEM], [C'D'M, C'E'M] of the minimum distance ρmin between crossed directional rays. The optimizing problem of the determination of coordinates of an inaccessible point of an object in space is reduced to a problem of the determination of the minimum distance between two crossed directional rays. It’s known from the theory of function of multiple variables that function ρ = f (tC'D', tC'E') reaches its extremum ρmin when its partial derivatives by each variable are equal to zero. Three strategies for selecting the position of the inaccessible point C (xC, yC, zC) in the found minimum region [CDM, CEM] are proposed. The required point C' (xC', yC', zC') can be located, for example, in the middle of the minimum segment [C'D'M, C'E'M]. The essence of the adaptive algorithm is in optimizing the variation of the initial values of data α, α', β, γ, γ', AB, at which the absolute and relative errors of the coordinates of the inaccessible point satisfy the error values set by the customer (0.0001-1.2%) The proposed approach is verified using real experimental data.
