Fully developed asymmetric flow in a plane channel

The paper presents the results of a detailed experimental examination of fully developed asymmetric flow between parallel planes. The asymmetry was introduced by roughening one of the planes while the other was left smooth; the ratio of the shear stresses at the two surfaces was typically about 4:1.The main emphasis of the research has been on establishing the turbulence structure, particularly in the central region of the channel where the two dissimilar wall flows (generated by the smooth and rough surfaces) interact. Measurements have included profiles of all non-zero double and triple velocity correlations; spectra of the same correlations at several positions in the channel; skewness and flatness factors; and lateral two-point space correlations of the streamwise velocity fluctuation.The region of greatest interaction is characterized by strong diffusional transport of turbulent shear stress and kinetic energy from the rough towards the smooth wall region, giving rise,inter alia, to an appreciable separation between the planes of zero shear stress and maximum mean velocity. The profiles of length scales of the larger-scale motion are, in contrast to the turbulent velocity field, nearly symmetric. Moreover, it appears that at high Reynolds numbers the small-scale motion may in many respects be treated as isotropic.

The effects of adverse pressure gradients on the thermal and momentum characteristics of a heated transitional boundary layer were investigated with free-stream turbulence ranging from 0.3 to 0.6 percent. Boundary layer measurements were conducted for two constant-K cases, K1 = −0.51 × 10−6 and K2 = −1.05 × 10−6. The fluctuation quantities, u′, ν′, t′, the Reynolds shear stress (uν), and the Reynolds heat fluxes (νt and ut) were measured. In general, u′/U∞, ν′/U∞, and νt have higher values across the boundary layer for the adverse pressure-gradient cases than they do for the baseline case (K = 0). The development of ν′ for the adverse pressure gradients was more actively involved than that of the baseline. In the early transition region, the Reynolds shear stress distribution for the K2 case showed a near-wall region of high-turbulent shear generated at Y+ = 7. At stations farther downstream, this near-wall shear reduced in magnitude, while a second region of high-turbulent shear developed at Y+ = 70. For the baseline case, however, the maximum turbulent shear in the transition region was generated at Y+ = 70, and no near-wall high-shear region was seen. Stronger adverse pressure gradients appear to produce more uniform and higher t′ in the near-wall region (Y+ < 20) in both transitional and turbulent boundary layers. The instantaneous velocity signals did not show any clear turbulent/nonturbulent demarcations in the transition region. Increasingly stronger adverse pressure gradients seemed to produce large non turbulent unsteadiness (or instability waves) at a similar magnitude as the turbulent fluctuations such that the production of turbulent spots was obscured. The turbulent spots could not be identified visually or through conventional conditional-sampling schemes. In addition, the streamwise evolution of eddy viscosity, turbulent thermal diffusivity, and Prt, are also presented.

Extending previous work on turbulent diffusion in the wake of a circular-cylinder, a series of measurements have been made of the turbulent transport of mean stream momentum, turbulent energy, and heat in the wake of a cylinder of 0.169 cm. diameter, placed in an air-stream of velocity 1280 cm. sec.-1. It has been possible to extend the measurements to 960 diameters down-stream from the cylinder, and it 1s found that, at distances in excess of 600 diameters, the requirements of dynamical similarity are very nearly satisfied. To account for the observed rates of transport of turbulent energy and heat, it is necessary that only part of this transport be due to bulk convection by the slow large-scale motion of the jets of turbulent fluid emitted by the central, fully turbulent core of the wake, which had been supposed previously to perform most of the transport. The remainder of the transport is carried out by the small-scale diffusive motion of the turbulent eddies within the jets, and may be described by assigning diffusion coefficients to the turbulent fluid. It is found that the diffusion coefficients for momentum and heat are approximately equal, but that for turbulent energy is considerably smaller. On the basis of these hypotheses, it is possible to calculate $he form of the mean velocity distribution in good agreement with experiment, and to give a qualitative explanation of the apparently more rapid diffusion of heat.

Conditional sampling has been performed on data from a transitional boundary layer subject to high (initially 9%) freestream turbulence and strong (K=ν/U∞2dU∞/dx as high as 9×10−6) acceleration. Methods for separating the turbulent and nonturbulent zone data based on the instantaneous streamwise velocity and the turbulent shear stress were tested and found to agree. Mean velocity profiles were clearly different in the turbulent and nonturbulent zones, and skin friction coefficients were as much as 70% higher in the turbulent zone. The streamwise fluctuating velocity, in contrast, was only about 10% higher in the turbulent zone. Turbulent shear stress differed by an order of magnitude, and eddy viscosity was three to four times higher in the turbulent zone. Eddy transport in the nonturbulent zone was still significant, however, and the nonturbulent zone did not behave like a laminar boundary layer. Within each of the two zones there was considerable self-similarity from the beginning to the end of transition. This may prove useful for future modeling efforts.

The blood damage prediction in rotary blood pumps is an important procedure to evaluate the hemocompatibility of such systems. Blood damage is caused by shear stresses to the blood cells and their exposure times. The total impact of an equivalent shear stress can only be taken into account when turbulent stresses are included in the blood damage prediction. The aim of this article was to analyze the influence of the turbulent stresses on the damage prediction in a rotary blood pump’s flow. Therefore, the flow in a research blood pump was computed using large eddy simulations. A highly turbulence-resolving setup was used in order to directly resolve most of the computed stresses. The simulations were performed at the design point and an operation point with lower flow rate. Blood damage was predicted using three damage models (volumetric analysis of exceeded stress thresholds, hemolysis transport equation, and hemolysis approximation via volume integral) and two shear stress definitions (with and without turbulent stresses). For both simulations, turbulent stresses are the dominant stresses away from the walls. Here, they act in a range between 9 and 50 Pa. Nonetheless, the mean stresses in the proximity of the walls reach levels, which are one order of magnitude higher. Due to this, the turbulent stresses have a small impact on the results of the hemolysis prediction. Yet, turbulent stresses should be included in the damage prediction, since they belong to the total equivalent stress definition and could impact the damage on proteins or platelets.

A fully developed Mach 3 turbulent boundary layer subjected to four expansion regions (centred and gradual expansions of 7° and 14°) was investigated with laser Doppler velocimetry. Measurements were acquired in the incoming flat-plate boundary layer and to s/δ≃20 downstream of the expansions. While mean velocity profiles exhibit significant progress towards recovery by the most downstream measurements, the turbulence structure remains far from equilibrium. Comparisons of computed (method of characteristics) and measured velocity profiles indicate that the post-expansion flow evolution is largely inviscid for approximately 10δ. Turbulence levels decrease across the expansion, and the reductions increase in severity as the wall is approached. Downstream of the 14° expansions, the reductions are more severe and reverse transition is indicated by sharp reductions in turbulent kinetic energy levels and a change in sign of the Reynolds shear stress. Dimensionless parameters such as anisotropy and shear stress correlation coefficient highlight the complex evolution of the post-expansion boundary layer. An examination of the compressible vorticity transport equation and estimates of the perturbation impulses attributable to streamline curvature, acceleration, and dilatation both confirm dilatation to be the primary stabilizer. However, the dilatation impulse increases only slightly for the 14° expansions, so the dramatic differences downstream of the 7° and 14° expansions indicate nonlinear boundary layer response. Differences attributable to the varied radii of surface curvature are fleeting for the 7° expansions, but persist through the spatial extent of the measurements for the 14° expansions.

The effects of wall suction on the structure of fully developed pipe flow are studied numerically by solving the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Linear and nonlinear k-ε or k-ω low-Re models of turbulence are used for “closing” the system of the governing equations. Computed results are compared satisfactorily against experimental measurements. Analytical results, based on boundary layer assumptions and the mixing length concept, provide a law of the wall for pipe flow under the influence of low suction rates. The analytical solution is found in satisfactory agreement with computed and experimental data for a suction rate of A = 0.46 percent. For the much higher rate of A = 2.53 percent the above assumptions are not valid and analytical velocities do not follow the computed and experimental profiles, especially in the near-wall region. Near-wall velocities, as well as the boundary shear stress, are increased with increasing suction rates. The excess wall shear stress, resulting from suction, is found to be 1.5 to 5.5 times the respective one with no suction. The turbulence levels are reduced with the presence of the wall suction. Computed results of the turbulent shear stress uv are in close agreement with experimental measurements. The distribution of the turbulent kinetic energy k is predicted better by the k-ω model of Wilcox (1993). Nonlinear models of the k-ε and k-ω type predict the reduction of the turbulence intensities u’, v’, w’, and the correct levels of v’ and w’ but they underpredict the level of u’.

FENE-P bead–spring chains unravel in the presence of large enough velocity gradients. In a turbulent flow, this can result in intermittent added stresses and exchanges of energy between the chains and the fluid, whose magnitudes depend on the degree of unravelling and on the orientations of the bead–spring chains. These effects are studied by calculating the average behaviour at different times of an ensemble of chains, contained in a fluid particle that is moving around in a random velocity field obtained from direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow of a Newtonian fluid in a channel. The results are used to evaluate theoretical explanations of drag reduction observed in very dilute solutions of polymers.In regions of the flow in which the energy exchange with the fluid is positive, the possibility arises that turbulence can be produced by mechanisms other than the interaction of Reynolds stresses and the mean velocity gradient field. Of particular interest, from the viewpoint of understanding polymer drag reduction, is the finding that the exchange is negative in velocity fields representative of the wall vortices that are large producers of turbulence. One can, therefore, postulate that polymers cause drag reduction by selectively changing the structures of eddies that produce Reynolds stresses. The intermittent appearance of large added shear stresses is consistent with the experimental finding of a stress deficit, whereby the total local shear stress is greater than the sum of the Reynolds stress and the time-averaged shear stress calculated from the time-averaged velocity gradient and the viscosity of the solvent.

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements were made in a fully-developed turbulent channel flow. The channel test section was 1 ft wide and 1 inch in height and was constructed out of plexiglass. One wall of the test section was made removable. Four walls were used: a plexiglass smooth wall, and three hydrophobic walls: (i) a lotus paint coated plexiglass wall, (ii) a treated aluminum sheet attached to the plexiglass wall and (iii) a treated rough surface attached to the plexiglass wall. The bulk velocity was held constant to yield a Reynolds number (based on the channel half-height) of 5,500. Several images were averaged to obtain mean velocity and Reynolds shear stress and turbulence kinetic energy measurements. It was found that the mean velocities in the near-wall region were higher for the lotus-paint coated surface flow and the treated rough surface flow than the flows with the other two surfaces. The friction velocity estimated from the Reynolds shear stress measurements was significantly lower for these two flows as well. The reduction in the wall shear stress in these flows is attributed to the finite slip that occurs at the hydrophobic surfaces.


The ‘law of the wall’ for the inner part of a turbulent shear flow over a solid surface is one of the cornerstones of fluid dynamics, and one of the very few pieces of turbulence theory whose results include a simple analytic function for the mean velocity distribution, the logarithmic law. Various aspects of the law have recently been questioned, and this paper is a summary of the present position. Although the law of the wall for velocity has apparently been confirmed by experiment well outside its original range, the law of the wall for temperature seems to apply only to very simple flows. Since the two laws are derived by closely analogous arguments this throws suspicion on the law of the wall for velocity. Analysis of simulation data, for all the Reynolds stresses including the shear stress, shows that law-of-the-wall scaling fails spectacularly in the viscous wall region, even when the logarithmic law is relatively well behaved. Virtually all turbulence models are calibrated to reproduce the law of the wall in simple flows, and we discuss whether, in practice or in principle, their range of validity is larger than that of the law of the wall itself: the present answer is that it is not; so that when the law of the wall (or the mixing-length formula) fails, current Reynolds-averaged turbulence models are likely to fail too.

Particle image velocimetry measurements are performed in a channel with periodic ribs on one wall. We investigate the flow around two different rib configurations: solid and perforated ribs with a slit. The ribs obstruct the channel by 20% of its height and are arranged 10 rib heights apart. For the perforated ribs, the slit height is 20% of the rib height, and the open-area ratio is 16%. We discuss the flow in terms of mean velocity, streamlines, vorticity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds shear stress. We find that the recirculation bubbles after the perforated ribs are significantly smaller than those after the solid ribs. The reattachment length after perforated ribs is smaller by about 45% compared with the solid ribs. In addition, the Reynolds shear stresses around the perforated ribs are significantly smaller than in the solid rib case, leading to a reduction of the pressure loss in the perforated rib case.
