Lecanactis (Roccellaceae) in Tasmania, with the description of a new saxicolous species and a revised key for the genus in Australia

AbstractThe lichen genus Lecanactis Körb. in Tasmania comprises six species: L. abietina (Ach.) Körb., which is widespread and pan-temperate; L. latispora Egea & Torrente and L. neozelandica Egea & Torrente, both shared with New Zealand and with the former recorded here from the Auckland Islands for the first time; L. mollis (Stirt.) Frisch & Ertz, shared with Victoria and New Zealand; L. aff. dilleniana (Ach.) Körb., a European species recorded provisionally for Tasmania on the basis of several sterile collections; L. scopulicola Kantvilas, which is described here as new to science and apparently a Tasmanian endemic. This new taxon occurs in rocky underhangs and is characterized by a thick, leprose thallus containing schizopeltic acid, and 3-septate ascospores, 19–30 × 4.5–6 μm. Short descriptions and a discussion of distribution and ecology are given for all species. A key for all 11 Australian species of the genus is provided, including L. subfarinosa (C. Knight) Hellb. and L. tibelliana Egea & Torrente, which are recorded for Australia for the first time, and L. platygraphoides (Müll.Arg.) Zahlbr., a first record for New South Wales. Lecanactis spermatospora Egea & Torrente and L. sulphurea Egea & Torrente are also included.

The orb-weaving spider genus Novaranea Court & Forster, 1988, previously known only from New Zealand, is here reported from Australia for the first time with the description of a new species. Generic affinities, here based on characteristic shapes of the median and terminal apophyses of the male pedipalp, remain somewhat ambiguous as some of the endemic New Zealand araneine genera remain to be tested within a rigorous phylogenetic analysis. Novaranea courti n. sp. is found in the southeastern parts of Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Mature spiders are generally found between January and March, although some specimens were collected in April, June and November. Novaranea courti n. sp. appears to prefer forest habitats (e.g. Southern Beech (Nothofagus) forest and Eucalyptus/Casuarina woodland), but was also found in more open areas such as grassand heathland.

Ceratodus diutinus, a new species of ceratodont lungfish similar to but not identical with Ceratodus kaupi Agassiz, 1838–1844, is described from the Lower Cretaceous Griman Creek Formation at Grawan and Lightning Ridge in northern New South Wales, Australia, and the Toolebuc Formation at Canary Station near Boulia in western Queensland. The species also occurred in one Late Oligocene–Middle Miocene deposit at North Prospect, Lake Pinpa, South Australia (Namba Formation). This is the first record from Australia of a species of Ceratodus similar to the Triassic ceratodonts of Europe. The Australian species lasted much longer than the related European species, C. kaupi, which is restricted to Triassic deposits.

Four new species of Actaecia Dana are described from Australia; three of these (A. bipleura, A. cyphotelson and A. nasuta) are from beaches in south-eastem Australia and one (A. forrnida) is from the mid-eastern coast of Queensland. Specimens from Tasmania identified previously as Actaecia pallida Nicholls & Barnes belong to A. bipleura. The same probably applies to others from New South Wales and Lord Howe Island. The distributions of the six Australian species are noted. A review of the monogeneric family Actaeciidae includes a new diagnosis of Actaecia and a key to species. The distributions of the two New Zealand species are listed.

Anopsobius wrighti n. sp., from the New England and Washpool-Gibraltar Range regions of northern New South Wales, is the first Australian species of the Gondwanan genus Anopsobius Silvestri, 1899 (Henicopidae: Anopsobiinae). Anopsobius is also known from Chile, Argentina, the Falkland Islands, South Africa, New Zealand, and the Chatham and Auckland Islands. The new species is closely related to the New Zealand species A. neozelanicus Silvestri, 1909.

The Australian planthopper genus Monomalpha Emeljanov, 2000 is reviewed. Males of M. gratiosa Emeljanov, 2000, a species originally described from a single female specimen, are presented for the first time. A new species, M. stenocara from Queensland is described. Together with the type species M. gratiosa, recorded from Queensland and mainland NSW, and M. fletcheri Emeljanov, 2000, a species endemic to Lord Howe Island (New South Wales) there are now three species recognised in the genus Monomalpha. A new endemic genus, Latissima gen. nov., is created within Cixiini to accommodate a new species from Queensland, Latissima isleyensis sp. nov. Identification keys to the genera of Australian Cixiini and to the species of Monomalpha are presented and host plant relationships discussed, including the first record of an Australian cixiid from the tree fern family Cyatheaceae.

Sclerotinia laxa is recorded for the first time in New South Wales, at Orange. A survey indicates that the disease is confined to the Central Tableland. The disease was detected on Chaenomeles spp. (flowering quince), Prunus domestica (European plum), Prunus persica (nectarine) and several ornamental Prunus species (flowering cherries, apricot and peach). Cultural characteristics and acrylamidc-gel clectrophoresis were used to compare several of these isolates with isolates of S. fructicola from New South Wales and with S. laxa from Victoria. Isolates of S. laxa from South Australia and Tasmania were also studied in culture. The general colony lobing and the absence of hyphal anastomoses between germinating conidia can be used to identify S. laxa. Other cultural features found to be of little value for identification are discussed. The electrophoretic patterns for several enzymes clearly distinguished S. laxa from S. fructicola, and these representative reference patterns are useful for species identification.

The Australian species belonging to the ant genus Myrmecina are revised. The genus was found to contain thirteen species, eleven of which are described here for the first time. The species include M. alpina sp. n., M. australis Wheeler and Wheeler, M. difficulta sp. n., M. eruga sp. n., M. inaequala sp. n., M. pumila sp. n., M. rugosa Forel, M. silvalaeva sp. n., M. silvampla sp. n., M. silvangula sp. n., M. silvarugosa sp. n., M. silvatransversa sp. n. and M. wesselensis sp. n. The majority of species are found in coastal Queensland with two also occurring in eastern New South Wales and one restricted to the Northern Territory. Several species are known from very limited regions and one is only known to occur above approximately 1000m, making these some of the most restricted and high-elevation specialist ants known from Australia.

AbstractThree new species of Menegazzia are described and illustrated, and their relationships and affinities to other species in the genus discussed. Menegazziabjerkeana Kantvilas is an isidiate species from the coastal ranges of New South Wales; M. brattii Kantvilas is an eight-spored species related to the widespread M. pertransita (Müll. Arg.) R. Sant., and is endemic to Kerguelen Island; and M. gallowayi Kantvilas is an eight-spored species from South Island, New Zealand. Menegazzia sanguinascens (Räsänen) R. Sant. is recorded from Kerguelen for the first time.

The Australian Scionini belong to five subgenera of the genus Scaptia, namely: Scaptia, known from South America and Australia, with 28 Australian species; Pseudoscione, known from South America, Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand, with 25 Australian species; Myioscaptia (7 species), Plinthina (7 species), and Palimmecomyia (2 species), known only from Australia. Many of the species suck blood, but some appear to feed only on flowers, chiefly of Leptospermum. Larvae and pupae of one species each of the subgenera Scaptia, Pseudoscione, and Myioscaptia are known. The principal concentration of species is in eastern New South Wales, with radiation north end south, and subsidiary concentrations in north Queensland and south-western Western Australia. The subgenus Plinthina has developed mainly in Western Australia. The Pleistocene glacial cycles are believed to have had a profound effect on speciation in the genus. The following new species and subspecies are described in the respective subgenera : Scaptia: barbara, B @, N.S.W., S. Qld. ; norrisi, B @, N.S.W., N. Qld. ; aurinotum, @, N.S.W. ; minuscula, B @, W.A. ; auranticula, B @, W.A. ; orba, @, N.S.W. ; alpina alpina, B @, N.S.W., Vic. ; alpina hardyi, B @, N.S.W. ; similis, B @, N.S.W., Qld. Pseudoscione: orientalis, B @, N.S.W., Vic.; guttipennis occidentalis, B @, W.A.; calabyi, B @, W.A.; neoconcolor, B @, N.Qld.; anomala, B @, N.S.W., Vic. Myioscaptia: calliphora, B @, N.S.W.; nigrocincta, @, N. Qld.; nigroapicalis, B @, N.S.W. Plinthina: nigerrima, @, N.S.W. ; subcinerea, B @, W.A. Palimmecomyia: pictipennis, @, S. Aust., ? W.A. AbstractAn identification key to the 39 species of Menegazzia recorded for Australia and its offshore islands (including Tasmania) is presented. Distribution patterns are discussed and summarized. Mainland Australia supports 19 species, with seven endemics, and shares 12 species with Tasmania, six with New Zealand and one with South America. The new species, Menegazzia williamsii Kantvilas from New South Wales, is described and is characterized by an inflated, fragile, esorediate thallus containing stictic acid but lacking isopigmentosin, 2-spored asci and an inspersed epihymenium. In addition, M. hypernota Bjerke, formerly known only from New Zealand, is recorded from Tasmania for the first time.
