The Australian Scionini belong to five subgenera of the genus Scaptia, namely: Scaptia, known from South America and Australia, with 28 Australian species; Pseudoscione, known from South America, Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand, with 25 Australian species; Myioscaptia (7 species), Plinthina (7 species), and Palimmecomyia (2 species), known only from Australia. Many of the species suck blood, but some appear to feed only on flowers, chiefly of Leptospermum. Larvae and pupae of one species each of the subgenera Scaptia, Pseudoscione, and Myioscaptia are known. The principal concentration of species is in eastern New South Wales, with radiation north end south, and subsidiary concentrations in north Queensland and south-western Western Australia. The subgenus Plinthina has developed mainly in Western Australia. The Pleistocene glacial cycles are believed to have had a profound effect on speciation in the genus. The following new species and subspecies are described in the respective subgenera : Scaptia: barbara, B @, N.S.W., S. Qld. ; norrisi, B @, N.S.W., N. Qld. ; aurinotum, @, N.S.W. ; minuscula, B @, W.A. ; auranticula, B @, W.A. ; orba, @, N.S.W. ; alpina alpina, B @, N.S.W., Vic. ; alpina hardyi, B @, N.S.W. ; similis, B @, N.S.W., Qld. Pseudoscione: orientalis, B @, N.S.W., Vic.; guttipennis occidentalis, B @, W.A.; calabyi, B @, W.A.; neoconcolor, B @, N.Qld.; anomala, B @, N.S.W., Vic. Myioscaptia: calliphora, B @, N.S.W.; nigrocincta, @, N. Qld.; nigroapicalis, B @, N.S.W. Plinthina: nigerrima, @, N.S.W. ; subcinerea, B @, W.A. Palimmecomyia: pictipennis, @, S. Aust., ? W.A. Scaptia (Scaptia) monticola, nom. nov., is proposed for montana Ricardo nec Hutton. Two species are added to the Pangoniini: Ectenopsis (Ectenopsis) erratica (Walk.), B, W.A., previously unrecognized; and Caenoprosopon dycei, sp, nov., B, N.S.W. Ommia prisca End. is transferred from the synonymy of Ectenopsis (Parasilvius) victoriensis Ferg. to the synonymy of Mesomyia (Lilaea) lurida (Walk.), Chrysopinae.

Anopsobius wrighti n. sp., from the New England and Washpool-Gibraltar Range regions of northern New South Wales, is the first Australian species of the Gondwanan genus Anopsobius Silvestri, 1899 (Henicopidae: Anopsobiinae). Anopsobius is also known from Chile, Argentina, the Falkland Islands, South Africa, New Zealand, and the Chatham and Auckland Islands. The new species is closely related to the New Zealand species A. neozelanicus Silvestri, 1909.

This paper contains descriptions of thirteen new Australian species of Scapheremaeus Berlese, 1910, belonging to the species groups Carinatus from New South Wales and Victoria (S. alisonae sp. nov., S. allmani sp. nov., S. nivalis sp. nov., S. tuberculosus sp. nov. and S. zephyrus sp. nov.), Patella from Western Australia and Tasmania (S. baylyi sp. nov. and S. tegulatus sp. nov.), Petrosus from New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia (S. bulbosensillatus sp. nov., S. euthemellus sp. nov., S. minjambuta sp. nov., S. notoverrucatus sp. nov. and S. truncatus sp. nov.) and Emarginatus from Queensland (S. walteri sp. nov.), Only members of the predominantly Neotropical and Australasian Carinatus species-group have been described from Australia hitherto, and Australian species constitute a third of this group. The Patella species-group is mostly Afrotropical (four spp.), with one Palaearctic and three Australasian species, including the two new species described herein. The Petrosus species-group, previously known from three Palaearctic, two Oriental and one Neotropical species, is now dominated by five new Australian species described herein. The Emarginatus species-group contains one species each from Australia, New Zealand, Java and Cuba. A key to Australian species is provided. The genus Scapheremaeus contains some 112 species, and can beconsidered hyperdiverse by oribatid standards. Morphological traits are considered that may relate to the ecological diversification and adaptive radiation of Scapheremaeus, particularly those related to species living on leaves and stems within rainforest canopies.

AbstractAn identification key to the 39 species of Menegazzia recorded for Australia and its offshore islands (including Tasmania) is presented. Distribution patterns are discussed and summarized. Mainland Australia supports 19 species, with seven endemics, and shares 12 species with Tasmania, six with New Zealand and one with South America. The new species, Menegazzia williamsii Kantvilas from New South Wales, is described and is characterized by an inflated, fragile, esorediate thallus containing stictic acid but lacking isopigmentosin, 2-spored asci and an inspersed epihymenium. In addition, M. hypernota Bjerke, formerly known only from New Zealand, is recorded from Tasmania for the first time.

The Australian species of the water beetle genus Hydraena Kugelann, 1794, are revised, based on the study of 7,654 specimens. The 29 previously named species are redescribed, and 56 new species are described. The species are placed in 24 species groups. High resolution digital images of all primary types are presented (online version in color), and geographic distributions are mapped. Male genitalia, representative female terminal abdominal segments and representative spermathecae are illustrated. Australian Hydraena are typically found in sandy/gravelly stream margins, often in association with streamside litter; some species are primarily pond dwelling, a few species are humicolous, and one species may be subterranean. The areas of endemicity and species richness coincide quite closely with the Bassian, Torresian, and Timorian biogeographic subregions. Eleven species are shared between the Bassian and Torresian subregions, and twelve are shared between the Torresian and Timorian subregions. Only one species, H. impercepta Zwick, is known to be found in both Australia and Papua New Guinea. One Australian species, H. ambiflagellata, is also known from New Zealand. The Australian Megisthanidae are revised, resulting in the description of five new species from passalid beetles (Coleoptera: Passalidae) in Queensland: M. manonae sp. nov. from Mastachilus australasicus; M. simoneae sp. nov. from Mastachilus polyphyllus; M. southcotti sp. nov. from Aulacocyclus fracticornis; M. womersleyi sp. nov. from Protomocoelus australis; and M. zachariei sp. nov. from Aulacocyclus kaupii. Megisthanus womersleyi is also based on material from Misima Island, Papua New Guinea, originally identified as Megisthanus doreianus Thorell, 1882. Megisthanus modestus Berlese, 1910, is redescribed based on material from Pharochilus spp. collected from Canberra, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania. The Papua New Guinean species Mastachilus papuanus Womersley, 1937 is diagnosed and discussed in relation to the other species from New Guinea. Additional collections of Megisthanus leviathanicus Seeman, 2017 and M. thorelli Womersley, 1937 are also reported. A genus description and a key to the eight Australian species of Megisthanus are provided.

The genus Agrotera Schrank, 1802 is revised for Australia and the generic definition is refined based on the male genitalia. The genera Leucinodella Strand, 1918 stat. rev. with L. leucostola (Hampson, 1896) comb. nov., Nistra Walker, 1859 stat. rev. with N. coelatalis Walker, 1859 comb. rev., Sagariphora Meyrick, 1894 stat. rev. with S. magnificalis (Hampson, 1893) comb. nov., and Tetracona Meyrick, 1884 stat. rev. with T. amathealis (Walker, 1859) comb. rev. and T. pictalis Warren, 1896 comb. rev. are removed from synonymy with Agrotera, as they lack the synapomorphies of Agrotera. Two new species, Agrotera genuflexa sp. nov. from Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, and A. longitabulata sp. nov. from Queensland, are described. The taxonomic status of the Australian species of Agrotera is discussed, and a key to all species, based on males, is provided. The adults and genitalia of the new species and some related species are figured.

In this communication the author gives a description of a fossil humerus from the breccia cave of Wellington Valley, which repeats the characters of that bone in the existing monotrematous genus Echidna more closely than those of the same bone in any other known kind of mammal. The fossil, however, greatly exceeds in size that of the existing Australian species, Echidna hystrix , Cuv. The existence of, at least, two other kinds lately discovered living in New Guinea has been made known in memoirs by Professor Gervais and Mr. E. P. Ramsay, E .L .S.; these occupy, in respect of size, the interval between them and the Australian Ech. hystrix , but the subject of the present paper makes known the largest Monotreme hitherto discovered. Figures of the fossil in question, and of the corresponding bone of the smaller existing Australian kind, accompany the text. The fossil formed part of the series of remains obtained from the cave above cited, and was with them submitted to the author, who proposes to indicate the present acquisition by the name Echidna Ramsayi .

A new genus, Wundacaenis, is erected for three new species of Australian caenid mayflies. The genus is diagnosed by possession of distinctive lobes on the anterolateral margins of the mesonotum. The distribution of Wundacaenis extends from the Kimberleys in Western Australia, through the Alligator Rivers Region in the Northern Territory, and down the eastern coast to the Shoalhaven River in New South Wales.
