Corophium urdaibaiense (Amphipoda: Corophiidae: Corophiinae: Corophiini) a new species from the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay, north-east Atlantic)

A new species of the corophiidean amphipod genus Corophium (sensu stricto) from the estuary of the Oka River (Basque Country, northern Iberian Peninsula) is presented. Data on the ecology and distribution of the species are included, which is comparable to other species of the genus, but has several differences. Two amendments to the diagnosis of the genus are proposed. A key of the European species of the genus is also included.

A new species of leptostracan (Crustacea: Phyllocarida: Leptostraca) belonging to the genus Nebalia, N. troncosoi sp. nov., is described from specimens collected off the Galician coast (Iberian Peninsula, north-east Atlantic). The new species is relatively common in sandy bottoms. It is characterized by having a long rostrum, an eye with small distal lobes, an antennular flagellum with up to seven articles, the exopod of the second maxilla longer than the first article of the endopod, and acute denticles along the posterior dorsal border of pleonites 6–7.

During the Capbreton cruises (1987–1990), samples of bathyal benthic macrofauna were taken at 37 stations situated along the continental slope (480–1113 m depth) of the Capbreton Canyon (Bay of Biscay, north-east Atlantic). Ten species of polychaetes belonging to six genera (Melinna, Eclysippe, Amphicteis,Anobothrus, GlyphanostomumandTanseimaruana) of the family Ampharetidae Malmgren, 1866 were collected at 13 of these stations. Most of these species are reported for the first time in the area.Amphicteisaff.wesenbergaeis reported for the first time after its recent description and a new species belonging to the genusGlyphanostomumis here described. Moreover, the finding ofMelinna monoceroidesrepresents the northernmost record of the species;Tanseimaruana vestisis recorded for the second time from the East Atlantic after its recent finding in Icelandic waters;Anobothrusaff.gracilisis reported for the second time from the Iberian Peninsula, representing, the southernmost record of the species in the Atlantic Ocean. The potential identification of two fragments of an Ampharetinae indet asAnobothrus laubieri, a deep water Arctic species, is discussed.

A new species of the cold-temperate austral amphipod genus Carangolia (Gammaridea: Urothoidae) is described from bathyal depths of the Bay of Biscay (north-east Atlantic). It was occasionally sampled in the south-eastern part of the Bay with sledges towed over muddy bottoms between 522 and 924 m water depth. This depth range falls mainly below the mud-line where the proportion of organic carbon increases in response to the deposition of silts and/or clay sediment. Most specimens were sampled by the lower net of the sledges, indicating a close association with the bottom. Abundance was relatively low, ranging between 0·18 and 4·90 ind 100 m−2, latter recorded below 700 m depth. The unusual massive appearance of Carangolia mandibles and its preference for bathyal foraminiferal oozes suggest that it is a specialized foraminifer consumer. The antitropical distribution pattern currently displayed by the genus could be an artefact due to equatorial submergence.

AbstractThe foliicolous genus Phylloblastia is recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula where it is represented by three species: P. fortuita sp. nov. from several localities in the north-east of Spain, P. dispersa, a new record for Europe and reported for the first time outside the tropics, and P. inexpectata. A key to the European species is provided.

A new species of antipatharian (black coral) in the genus Trissopathes is described. It is common in the bathyal zone of the north-east Atlantic, including the Bay of Biscay, Celtic Slope and adjacent banks and seamounts. The species is often observed in underwater photographs from untrawled parts of carbonate mounds in the area. Trissopathes grasshoffi sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from its three congeners by having relatively sparse branching, a higher density of primary pinnules, and 3–6 secondary anterolateral pinnules as well as by the shape and size of its spines. The present state of knowledge of Trissopathes is reviewed.

A new species of Ischnomesidae (Crustacea: Isopoda: Asellota), Haplomesus longiramus sp. nov. is described from the Bay of Biscay. This species is unusual due to the presence of long, thin anterolateral projections supporting the antennae and an elongate pereonite 4. These features are also seen in Haplomesus biscayensis Chardy, 1975, and the two species closely resemble each other. The presence of a laterally directed spine on pereonite 5 of the male of Haplomesus longiramus sp. nov. along with the elongate uropods of both male and female easily differentiates this species from H. biscayensis. Within its known distributional area, this new Haplomesus species inhabits bathyal muddy bottoms from 500–1009 m, with a maximum abundance of 29 individuals per 100 m 2 recorded at approximately 700 m.

Based on material collected during the BIOICE project, the taxonomy and distribution of Terebellides (Polychaeta; Trichobranchidae) in Icelandic waters is presented. Terebellides stroemii Sars, 1853 and Terebellides gracilis Malm, 1874 (as Terebellides williamsae Jirkov, 1989) were previously reported from the area. Terebellides atlantis Williams, 1984 is reported for the first time after the original description and redescribed. Terebellides bigeniculatus sp. nov. is diagnosed by the presence of two thoracic chaetigers with geniculate chaetae. Terebellides williamsae Jirkov, 1989 is proposed as a junior synonym of T. gracilis, whose holotype is redescribed herein. Several body characters with high taxonomic value in Terebellides are reviewed under the SEM; additions to the diagnosis and new potential characters for a future taxonomic revision and phylogenetic study of the genus are also suggested. The geographical and bathymetric distribution of each species in relation to the GIF Ridge is discussed, and a key to Terebellides species from North East Atlantic waters is provided.

A new species of Ophlitaspongia (Porifera: Microcionidae) from wave-exposed sublittoral rock in the north-east Atlantic is described and compared to the two other species recorded from the genus in the north-east Atlantic. The species known as Ophlitaspongia seriata is considered to be a junior synonym of Halichondria panicea. Consequently, the name O. papilla has been reinstated. The other recorded species O. basifixa, is from deep water. Ophlitaspongia basifixa has characters which differentiate it from Ophlitaspongia sp. nov. The genus Ophlitaspongia has been separated from related genera and reinstated for species in the North Atlantic.
