Bryn Celli Ddu Passage Tomb, Anglesey: Alignment, Construction, Date, and Ritual

Bryn Celli Ddu is one of only two developed passage tombs in Wales, and has occupied a pivotal place in narratives of this region since the publication of excavations in the 1920s by W.J. Hemp. The construction sequence at the site has been at the centre of debate on several occasions with previous models raising important issues about the sequence of major monument types (notably the henge and the passage tomb) and the inter-regional links of the tomb's builders. This paper presents a new interpretation of the site's construction history, drawing on several sources, including: the recent demonstration that the tomb is aligned on the midsummer sunrise; Hemp's unpublished archive; and the results of a radiocarbon dating programme. The result is a two phase model which shows the tomb to have been built between 3074 and 2956 calbc, and which sheds fresh light on the ritual practices of the community which built it.

The objective of this study is to quantify the effects of humic acid solution infiltration on the transport of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soil columns using a three-phase transport model. From experimental results, it is found that the dissolved organic carbon enhances the transport of OCPs in the soil columns. In the OCPs-only column, the concentration profiles of OCPs can be simulated well using a two-phase transport model with numerical method or analytical solution. In the OCPs-DOC column, the migrations of aldrin, DDT and its daughter compounds are faster than those in the OCPs-only column. The simulation with the three-phase model is more accurate than that with the two-phase model. In addition, significant decrease of the fluid pore velocities of the OCPs-DOC column was found. When DOC leachate is applied for remediation of soil or groundwater pollution, the decrease of mean pore velocities will be a crucial affecting factor.

The two-dimensional and two-phase model of the gas-liquid mixture is constructed. The validity of numerical model realization is justified by using a comparative analysis of test problems solution with one-dimensional calculations. The regularities of gas-saturated liquid outflow from axisymmetric vessels for different geometries are established.

In this paper, the effect of the mix composition on rheological behavior of fresh cement-sand mixture is studied by considering a mixture as a two-phase model that is decomposed into a granular and a paste phase. The paste itself is subdivided into void paste and excess paste. Void paste fills the void space between the grains when they are in a fully compacted state while excess paste will use the remaining paste to form a paste layer around each individual grain particle, with equal thickness. By considering each grain particle covered with the excess paste layer as a single element, the rheological behavior of cement-sand mixtures can be related to their inter-element interactions for all sets of particle combinations.
