AbstractIn 1983 Samorski and Stamm found evidence of ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray emission from Cygnus X-3 in archival data from the Kiel air shower array. The emission appeared to be emitted only at one phase in the binary orbit. The Kiel array was sensitive to air showers generated by particles with energies above 3 × 1015 eV. Their discovery led to searches in archival data from other arrays for evidence of UHE emission from Cygnus X-3 and other potential sources in the Galaxy, and to the construction of new air shower arrays dedicated to UHE astronomy.In the mid 1980s many groups around the world claimed detections of Cygnus X-3, Hercules X-1, Vela X-1, and other objects. Cygnus X-3 is strongly variable at all wavelengths, and so it would be surprising if this variability did not extend to UHE gamma-rays also. This indeed appeared to be the case, and in the mid to late 1980s the UHE gamma-ray output showed a steady decline apart from transient UHE emission following giant radio flares. With the exception of possible detections above 1017 eV by the Fly’s Eye and Akeno Array, I am unaware of any statistically compelling claimed detections of this source reported over the past 4 years. The new arrays—CASA-MIA and SPASE—have not detected any of the claimed sources, and it seems likely that at least some of these early claims may have been premature. However, although none of the observations taken alone was of extremely high statistical significance, the observations of Cygnus X-3 by different groups showed a consistency which I feel cannot be ascribed to chance alone. The observations of Cygnus X-3 and the Crab Nebula/Pulsar are reviewed with particular reference to the results published during the last 5 years.Subject headings: gamma rays: observations — pulsars: individual (Crab Nebula) — stars: individual (Cygnus X-3)

AbstractThe Buckland Park air shower array is being developed particularly for use as an ultra-high-energy gamma ray astronomy telescope. The properties of this instrument are described with an emphasis on improvements being made to its angular resolution. Some early data are presented to illustrate the way in which the data obtained will be used.

We report on the first detection of very high-energy gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula by a Cherenkov telescope in dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) configuration. This result has been achieved by means of the 4 m ASTRI-Horn telescope, operated on Mt. Etna, Italy, and developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory preparatory phase. The dual-mirror SC design is aplanatic and characterized by a small plate scale, which allows us to implement large cameras with a large field of view, with small-size pixel sensors and a high level of compactness. The curved focal plane of the ASTRI camera is covered by silicon photo-multipliers, managed by an unconventional front-end electronic system that is based on a customized peak-sensing detector mode. The system includes internal and external calibration systems, hardware and software for control and acquisition, and the complete data archiving and processing chain. These observations of the Crab Nebula were carried out in December 2018 during the telescope verification phase for a total observation time (after data selection) of 24.4 h, equally divided between on- and off-axis source exposure. The camera system was still under commission and its functionality was not yet completely exploited. Furthermore, due to recent eruptions of the Etna Volcano, the mirror reflection efficiency was reduced. Nevertheless, the observations led to the detection of the source with a statistical significance of 5.4σ above an energy threshold of ∼3 TeV. This result provides an important step toward the use of dual-mirror systems in Cherenkov gamma-ray astronomy. A pathfinder mini-array based on nine ASTRI-like telescopes with a large field-of-view is in the course of implementation.

AbstractAn analysis has been made of events recorded in one year from the direction of the active galaxy Centaurus A using the Buckland Park UHE gamma-ray telescope. No statistically significant excess was observed over this period. Data collected between 1984 and 1989 show evidence for an excess of events from this direction at shower sizes in the range of 2 × 105 to 5 × 105 particles.

The CORSIKA 8 project is an international collaboration of scientists working together to deliver the most modern, flexible, robust and efficient framework for the simulation of ultra-high energy secondary particle cascades in matter. The main application is for cosmic ray air shower simulations, but it can also be applied to other problems in astro(particle)-physics, particle physics and nuclear physics. Besides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art collection of physics models as well as algorithms relevant for the field, also all possible interfaces to hardware acceleration (e.g. GPU) and parallelization (vectorization, multi-threading, multi-core) will be provided. We present the status and roadmap of this project. This code will soon be available for novel explorative studies and phenomonological research, and at the same time for massive productions runs for experiments.
