SUMMARY This paper aims at developing a novel method to assess the kinematic reliability of robotic manipulators based on the fuzzy theory. The kinematic reliability quantifies the probability of obtaining positioning errors within acceptable limits. For this purpose, the fuzzy reliability evaluates the effect of the joint clearances on the end-effector position to compute a failure possibility index. As an alternative to the conventional methods reported in the literature, this failure possibility index conveys a novel assessment of the kinematic performance. The numerical results are compared with the well-known probabilistic approach based on the Monte Carlo simulation.

AbstractWe present a novel method for learning from demonstration 6-D tasks that can be modeled as a sequence of linear motions and compliances. The focus of this paper is the learning of a single linear primitive, many of which can be sequenced to perform more complex tasks. The presented method learns from demonstrations how to take advantage of mechanical gradients in in-contact tasks, such as assembly, both for translations and rotations, without any prior information. The method assumes there exists a desired linear direction in 6-D which, if followed by the manipulator, leads the robot’s end-effector to the goal area shown in the demonstration, either in free space or by leveraging contact through compliance. First, demonstrations are gathered where the teacher explicitly shows the robot how the mechanical gradients can be used as guidance towards the goal. From the demonstrations, a set of directions is computed which would result in the observed motion at each timestep during a demonstration of a single primitive. By observing which direction is included in all these sets, we find a single desired direction which can reproduce the demonstrated motion. Finding the number of compliant axes and their directions in both rotation and translation is based on the assumption that in the presence of a desired direction of motion, all other observed motion is caused by the contact force of the environment, signalling the need for compliance. We evaluate the method on a KUKA LWR4+ robot with test setups imitating typical tasks where a human would use compliance to cope with positional uncertainty. Results show that the method can successfully learn and reproduce compliant motions by taking advantage of the geometry of the task, therefore reducing the need for localization accuracy.

The paper focuses on the extension of the virtual-joint-based stiffness modeling technique for the case of different types of loadings applied both to the robot end-effector and to manipulator intermediate points (auxiliary loading). It is assumed that the manipulator can be presented as a set of compliant links separated by passive or active joints. It proposes a computationally efficient procedure that is able to obtain a non-linear force-deflection relation taking into account the internal and external loadings. It also produces the Cartesian stiffness matrix. This allows to extend the classical stiffness mapping equation for the case of manipulators with auxiliary loading. The results are illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract Repetitive motion planning (RMP) is important in operating redundant robotic manipulators. In this paper, a new RMP scheme that is based on the pseudoinverse formulation is proposed for redundant robotic manipulators. Such a scheme is derived from the discretization of an existing RMP scheme by utilizing the difference formula. Then, theoretical analysis and results are presented to show the characteristic of the proposed RMP scheme. That is, this scheme possesses the characteristic of cube pattern in the end-effector planning precision. The proposed RMP scheme is further extended and studied for redundant robotic manipulators under joint constraint. Based on a four-link robotic manipulator, simulation results substantiate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed RMP scheme and its extended one.

Abstract A method is presented to identify the source of end-effector positioning errors in large manipulators using experimentally measured data. Both errors due to manufacturing tolerances and other geometric errors and elastic structural deformations are identified. These error sources are used to predict, and compensate for, the end-point errors as a function of configuration and measured forces. The method is applied to a new large high accuracy medical robot. Experimental results show that the method is able to effectively correct for the errors in the system.

The development of additive manufacturing requires the improvement of 3D printers to increase accuracy and productivity. Delta kinematics 3D printers have advantages over traditional sequential kinematics 3D printers. The main advantage is the high travel speed due to the parallel movement of the platform from three pairs of arms. Another advantage is the relatively low cost due to the small number of structural components. However, delta 3D printers have received limited use. The main reason is the low positioning accuracy of the end effector. Errors in the manufacture and assembly of components of a parallel drive mechanism add up geometrically and cause an error in the position of the end effector. These formulas can be applied to a 3D printer as well. However, well-known studies consider deterministic models. Therefore, the analysis is performed for limiting size errors. The purpose of this article is to simulate the effect of statistical errors in displacements and arm lengths on the positioning errors of a platform with the end effector. The article effectively complements the field of error analysis research and provides theoretical advice on error compensation for delta 3D printer.
