AbstractLet D be an integrally closed local Noetherian domain of Krull dimension 2, and let f be a nonzero element of D such that fD has prime radical. We consider when an integrally closed ring H between D and Df is determined locally by finitely many valuation overrings of D. We show such a local determination is equivalent to a statement about the exceptional prime divisors of normalized blow-ups of D and, when D is analytically normal, this property holds for D if and only if it holds for the completion of D. This latter fact, along with MacLane's notion of key polynomials, allows us to prove that in some central cases where D is a regular local ring and f is a regular parameter of D, then H is determined locally by a single valuation. As a consequence, we show that if H is also the integral closure of a finitely generated D-algebra, then the exceptional prime ideals of the extension H/D are comaximal. Geometrically, this translates into a statement about intersections of irreducible components in the closed fiber of the normalization of a proper birational morphism.

AbstractLet A be a local Noetherian domain of Krull dimension d. Heinzer, Rotthaus, and Sally have shown that if the generic formal fiber of A has dimension d – 1, then A is birationally dominated by a 1-dimensional analytically ramified local Noetherian ring having residue field finite over the residue field of A. We explore further this correspondence between prime ideals in the generic formal fiber and 1-dimensional analytically ramified local rings. Our main focus is on the case where the analytically ramified local rings are stable, and we show that in this case the embedding dimension of the stable ring reflects the embedding dimension of a prime ideal maximal in the generic formal fiber, thus providing a measure of how far the generic formal fiber deviates from regularity. A number of characterizations of analytically ramified local stable domains are also given.

A (commutative integral) domain R is said to be valuative if, for each nonzero element u in the quotient field of R, at least one of R ⊆ R[u] and R ⊆ R[u-1] has no proper intermediate rings. Such domains are closely related to valuation domains. If R is a valuative domain, then R has at most three maximal ideals, and at most two if R is not integrally closed. Also, if R is valuative, the set of nonmaximal prime ideals of R is linearly ordered, at most one maximal ideal of R does not contain each nonmaximal prime of R, and RP is a valuation domain for each prime P except for at most one maximal ideal. Any integrally closed valuative domain is a Bézout domain. Valuation domains are characterized as the quasilocal integrally closed valuative domains. Each one-dimensional Prüfer domain with at most three maximal ideals is valuative.

AbstractLet D be an integrally closed domain, $$\{V_{\alpha }\}$$ { V α } be the set of t-linked valuation overrings of D, and $$v_c$$ v c be the star operation on D defined by $$I^{v_c} = \bigcap _{\alpha } IV_{\alpha }$$ I v c = ⋂ α I V α for all nonzero fractional ideals I of D. In this paper, among other things, we prove that D is a $$v_c$$ v c -Noetherian domain if and only if D is a Krull domain, if and only if $$v_c = v$$ v c = v and every prime t-ideal of D is a maximal t-ideal. As a corollary, we have that if D is one-dimensional, then $$v_c = v$$ v c = v if and only if D is a Dedekind domain.

Let 𝕏 be a finite group of primitive Dirichlet characters. Let ξ = ∑χ∈𝕏 aχ χ be a nonzero element of the group ring ℤ[𝕏]. We investigate the smallest prime q that is coprime to the conductor of each χ ∈ 𝕏 and that satisfies ∑χ∈𝕏 aχ χ(q) ≠ 0. Our main result is a nontrivial upper bound on q valid for certain special forms ξ. From this, we deduce upper bounds on the smallest unramified prime with a given splitting type in an abelian number field. For example, let K/ℚ be an abelian number field of degree n and conductor f. Let g be a proper divisor of n. If there is any unramified rational prime q that splits into g distinct prime ideals in ØK, then the least such q satisfies [Formula: see text].

AbstractIn 2007, Shimoda, in connection with a long-standing question of Sally, asked whether a Noetherian local ring, such that all its prime ideals different from the maximal ideal are complete intersections, has Krull dimension at most 2. In this paper, having reduced the conjecture to the case of dimension 3, if the ring is regular and local of dimension 3, we explicitly describe a family of prime ideals of height 2 minimally generated by three elements. Weakening the hypothesis of regularity, we find that, to achieve the same end, we need to add extra hypotheses, such as completeness, infiniteness of the residue field, and the multiplicity of the ring being at most 3. In the second part of the paper, we turn our attention to the category of standard graded algebras. A geometrical approach via a double use of a Bertini theorem, together with a result of Simis, Ulrich, and Vasconcelos, allows us to obtain a definitive answer in this setting. Finally, by adapting work of Miller on prime Bourbaki ideals in local rings, we detail some more technical results concerning the existence in standard graded algebras of homogeneous prime ideals with an (as it were) excessive number of generators.

Suppose that R is a commutative ring with 1 ≠ 0. In this paper, we introduce the concept of 2-absorbing ideal which is a generalisation of prime ideal. A nonzero proper ideal I of R is called a 2-absorbing ideal of R if whenever a, b, c ∈ R and abc ∈ I, then ab ∈ I or ac ∈ I or bc ∈ I. It is shown that a nonzero proper ideal I of R is a 2-absorbing ideal if and only if whenever I1I2I3 ⊆ I for some ideals I1,I2,I3 of R, then I1I2 ⊆ I or I2I3 ⊆ I or I1I3 ⊆ I. It is shown that if I is a 2-absorbing ideal of R, then either Rad(I) is a prime ideal of R or Rad(I) = P1 ⋂ P2 where P1,P2 are the only distinct prime ideals of R that are minimal over I. Rings with the property that every nonzero proper ideal is a 2-absorbing ideal are characterised. All 2-absorbing ideals of valuation domains and Prüfer domains are completely described. It is shown that a Noetherian domain R is a Dedekind domain if and only if a 2-absorbing ideal of R is either a maximal ideal of R or M2 for some maximal ideal M of R or M1M2 where M1,M2 are some maximal ideals of R. If RM is Noetherian for each maximal ideal M of R, then it is shown that an integral domain R is an almost Dedekind domain if and only if a 2-absorbing ideal of R is either a maximal ideal of R or M2 for some maximal ideal M of R or M1M2 where M1,M2 are some maximal ideals of R.
