SynopsisA regular semigroup S is called V-regular if for any elements a, b ∈ S and any inverse (ab)′ of ab, there exists an inverse a′ of a and an inverse b′ of b such that (ab)′ = b′a′. A characterization of a V-regular semigroup is given in terms of its partial band of idempotents. The strongly V-regular semigroups form a subclass of the class of V-regular semigroups which may be characterized in terms of their biordered set of idempotents. It is shown that the class of strongly V-regular semigroups comprises the elementary rectangular bands of inverse semigroups (including the completely simple semigroups), a special class of orthodox semigroups (including the inverse semigroups), the strongly regular Baer semigroups (including the semigroups that are the multiplicative semigroup of a von Neumann regular ring), the full transformation semigroup on a set, and the semigroup of all partial transformations on a set.

In (5) the author showed how to construct all inverse semigroups from their trace and semilattice of idempotents: the construction is by means of a family of mappings between ℛ-classes of the semigroup which we refer to as the structure mappings of the semigroup. In (7) (see also (8) and (9)) K. S. S. Nambooripad has adopted a similar approach to the structure of regular semigroups: he shows how to construct regular semigroups from their trace and biordered set of idempotents by means of a family of mappings between ℛ-classes and between ℒ-classes of the semigroup which we again refer to as the structure mappings of the semigroup. In the present paper we aim to provide a simpler set of axioms characterising the structure mappings on a regular semigroup than the axioms (R1)-(R7) of Nambooripad (9). Two major differences occur between Nambooripad's approach (9) and the approach adopted here: first, we consider the set of idempotents of our semigroups to be equipped with a partial regular band structure (in the sense of Clifford (3)) rather than a biorder structure, and second, we shall enlarge the set of structure mappings used by Nambooripad.

Let S be a regular semigroup. A pair (e,f) of idempotents of S is said to be a skew pair of idempotents if fe is idempotent, but ef is not. T. S. Blyth and M. H. Almeida (T. S. Blyth and M. H. Almeida, skew pair of idempotents in transformation semigroups, Acta Math. Sin. (English Series), 22 (2006), 1705–1714) gave a characterization of four types of skew pairs—those that are strong, left regular, right regular, and discrete—existing in a full transformation semigroup T(X). In this paper, we do in this line for partial transformation semigroups.

AbstractThe partition monoid is a salient natural example of a *-regular semigroup. We find a Galois connection between elements of the partition monoid and binary relations, and use it to show that the partition monoid contains copies of the semigroup of transformations and the symmetric and dual-symmetric inverse semigroups on the underlying set. We characterize the divisibility preorders and the natural order on the (straight) partition monoid, using certain graphical structures associated with each element. This gives a simpler characterization of Green’s relations. We also derive a new interpretation of the natural order on the transformation semigroup. The results are also used to describe the ideal lattices of the straight and twisted partition monoids and the Brauer monoid.

The group ring AG of a group G and a ring A is the ring of all formal sums Σg∈G agg with ag ∈ A and with only finitely many non-zero ag. Elements of A are assumed to commute with the elements of G. In (2), Connell characterized or completed the characterization of Artinian, completely reducible and (von Neumann) regular group rings ((2) also contains many other basic results). In (3, Appendix 3) Connell used a theorem of Passman (6) to characterize semi-prime group rings. Following in the spirit of these investigations, this paper deals with the complete ring of (right) quotients Q(AG) of the group ring AG. It is hoped that the methods used and the results given may be useful in characterizing group rings with maximum condition on right annihilators and complements, at least in the semi-prime case.

We classify the maximal Clifford inverse subsemigroups [Formula: see text] of the full transformation semigroup [Formula: see text] on an [Formula: see text]-element set with [Formula: see text] for all [Formula: see text]. This classification differs from the already known classifications of Clifford inverse semigroups, it provides an algorithm for its construction. For a given natural number [Formula: see text], we find also the largest size of an inverse subsemigroup [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] satisfying [Formula: see text] with least rank [Formula: see text] for any element in [Formula: see text].

We extend various properties from a direct summand X of a module M, whose complement is semisimple, to its trace in M or to M itself. The case when MR = RR and the properties are injectivity or P-injectivity is fully described. As applications, we extend some known results for right HI-rings and give a new characterization of semisimple rings. We conclude this paper by giving some conditions that yield the self-injectivity of von Neumann regular rings.

AbstractA characterization of group congruences on an eventually regular semigroup S is provided. It is shown that a group congruence is dually right modular in the lattice of congruences on S. Also for any group congruence ℸ and any congruence p on S, ℸ Vp and kernel ℸ Vp are described.

We show that eachR-module isn-flat (resp., weaklyn-flat) if and only ifRis an(n,n−1)-ring (resp., a weakly(n,n−1)-ring). We also give a new characterization ofn-Von Neumann regular rings and a characterization of weakn-Von Neumann regular rings for (CH)-rings and for local rings. Finally, we show that in a class of principal rings and a class of local Gaussian rings, a weakn-Von Neumann regular ring is a (CH)-ring.

It is shown that a von Neumann regular ring R is left seif-injective if and only if every finitely generated torsion-free left R-module is projective. It is further shown that a countable self-injective strongly regular ring is Artin semi-simple.
