“Like an Expert Sharecropper”: Agricultural Halakhah and Agricultural Science in Rabbinic Palestine

The formulation and application of rabbinic Halakhah often depends on the determination of facts that belong, to one degree or another, to the province of professional experts. The resulting structural tension is analogous to that posed by the prominence of the expert witness in the modern American court, or the active role of private industry in administrative law. This article examines the relationship in the classical rabbinic corpus from Palestine between rabbis and farmers, or between rabbinic and agricultural expertise. It considers whether agriculture would have been conceived of in this context as a specialized or technical body of knowledge, and, if so, whether and how agricultural Halakhah accommodates itself to this fact.

Recently, China has shown her strong expansionism in East Sea while The US also expresses her determination of implementing the “coming back to Asia” policy. In that context, Japan openly expresses the concerns and actively establishes its role in solving the issues of East Sea. The recent move of Japan is not a single move but in a series of strategic policies of Japan in order to ensure maritime security of Japan as well as restrain the expansionism of China. ASEAN countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines give a cheerful reception toward this move of Japan and hope that Japan can play an active role and more effective in resolving the issue of East Sea dispute. This paper will clarify the following issues: 1. The concern of Japan toward the East Sea Dispute and the move of Japan in the issue. 2. Expectation of ASEAN countries and the world about the role of Japan in resolving the East Sea dispute. 3. From Japan’s perspective of its maritime policy and international relationship strategy, particularly the relationship with the US, China, and ASEAN, the paper will examine whether Japan can meet the expectations of ASEAN countries and the world in resolving the issue of East Sea Dispute.

This chapter examines the role of green transformational leadership on promoting green organizational behavior. Green transformational leadership has been found to be influencing green organizational behavior. The study uses content analysis and website analysis. Nedbank is used in the chapter as an archetype of an organization with a green transformational leadership which has influenced green organizational behavior. Four characteristics of green transformational leadership namely idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration were used. The leadership engages its customer and rewards them for green behavior which is important for intellectual stimulation and motivating their employees. The study contributes to the body of knowledge on green transformational behavior by confirming the relationship. The chapter recommends that more trainings and educational awareness on green values be provided to the management so that ultimately this are emulated and practiced by their employees.

Television channels for children contain many cartoons and programs. These productions reach the viewers via both the television and the channel's official website. TRT Çocuk, broadcasting for children as a government television channel, presents many locally produced animated cartoons to the viewers. A product of the modern and digital technology, these locally produced cartoons carry importance in terms of transfer of social values. This study focuses on locally produced animation cartoons that have an important potential especially in the transfer of national and moral values. Determination of values conveyed via cartoons that bear importance in the transformation of television into an educational tool allows the media and child relationships to become visible. This work aims to examine the relationship between media and values by defining the concept of “value.” After creating a corporate frame, the study brings to light the social values conveyed in locally produced cartoons aired on TRT Çocuk television channel via qualitative analysis method.

This chapter focuses on administrative justice. It reflects on the nature of administrative law and the role it plays in modern society, overseeing the relationship between the citizen and the state. Once again adopting the holisitic approach, the chapter discusses not only the role of the courts, but also the tribunals, ombudsmen, and other bodies and processes that together make up the institutional framework of administrative justice. It notes some of the key changes being introduced as a result of the Transformation Programme and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also considers the particular responsibilities of Members of Parliament in holding the Government to account. In addition, it asks who has general oversight of the system and whether current oversight arrangements are adequate.

AbstractThe effect of fiber surface treatments on the relationship between the tensile strength of a filament and the shear strength of its interphase is one of the central issues facing composite materials technologists today. We demonstrate here that analysis of fragmentation phenomena in monofilament composites can simultaneously yield information about these two parameters. Characterization of shear stress transfer zones in non-critical fragments has led us to the determination of interphase strength.A phenomenological treatment that highlights the role of the matrix in the fragmentation process is presented here. This analysis considers issues such as the strain energy exchange between a failing fiber and the matrix, as well as interphase relaxation due to the viscoelastic nature of the matrix. Our observations of the fragmentation phenomena in AU4/polycarbonate monofilament composites indicate that the fiber/matrix interaction in this system is governed by micromechanical locking.

We present a rationale and proposed approach to the modification and development of bind sites using their respective cognate ligands as template. This is in support of a plausible “instructive” role for the ligand and therefore its involvement in determination of the structure and properties of bind sites. We emphasize the relationship between substrate and active site as an example of the relationship between ligand and bind sites, respectively. This is based on the assumption that there are shared features between all ligand:bind site complexes. Therefore, principles that apply to a specific complex can be applied, in general, to other protein-based complexes. We define ligand-associated probability bias as the difference between the probability of finding activity-determining conformations (ADCs) in the presence- and absence of ligands. For cognate ligands, the given bias is in favor of these ADCs. Thus, bind sites are more likely to assume ADCs when their cognate ligands are present. We relate such probability bias to structural reorganization, disorganization, and preorganization events. We then propose a means of deriving an [apparent] preorganized bind site structure by way of reorganization events that occur with cognate ligand. Finally, we propose a means of deriving an [actual] preorganized bind site structure by way of reorganization events that occur with cognate ligand, albeit during the folding process. The assumption is that the role of the ligand in derivation of such [actual] preorganized bind site structures is an instructive role, and is in support of the Haurowitz-Pauling hypothesis.

A given explanatory theory T falls into circular reasoning if the only way to determine its explanandum is through the application of T. To find an (often previous) underlying theory T′ that determines T′s explanandum helps us save T from this accusation of circularity. We follow the structuralist view of theories in presenting and dealing with this issue, by applying it to particular theories. More specifically, we focus on the relationship between the Darwinian theory of common ancestry and the determination of homologies.
