In this special issue of Visual Neuroscience, we present a series of papers to honor the life and career of Robert William Rodieck, who passed away at his home in Seattle on September 30, 2003. Rodieck held the E.K. Bishop Professorship in Ophthalmology at the University of Washington Medical Center from 1978–1997. Known to everyone as “Bob,” he leaves behind an intellectual legacy often admired by his colleagues and friends for its scope, intensity, and empathy for what was beautiful in the object of his studies.

ABSTRACT In early March 2020, the University of Washington Medical Center clinical virology laboratory became one of the first clinical laboratories to offer testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). When we first began test development in mid-January, neither of us believed there would be more than 2 million confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections nationwide or that we would have performed more than 150,000 real-time PCR (RT-PCR) tests, with many more to come. This article will be a chronological summary of how we rapidly validated tests for SARS-CoV-2, increased our testing capacity, and addressed the many problems that came up along the way.

Abstract Background Inequitable use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing for cancer risk and treatment can contribute to heath disparity. Consequently, it is important to assess the population receiving this testing. In this article, we characterize the population receiving both germline and somatic NGS testing for cancer predisposition and precision oncology at the Genetics and Solid Tumors Laboratory of the University of Washington Medical Center. Methods The general demographics, including ancestry, of patients receiving somatic testing to identify genes related to cancer treatment or prognosis, diagnosis, or germline testing for heritable cancer risk from January 2015 to July 2017 were characterized. Ancestry was determined using single nucleotide variant data and documented pedigree. The demographics of the patient population receiving testing were compared with a reference population comprising patients receiving care from the University of Washington Medical Center with a diagnosis of malignant neoplasm of breast, ovary, colon, rectum, or prostate between January 2015 and May 2018. Results A total of 2210 unique patients were included in this study. Women composed 66% of our total tested population. Patients of European ancestry composed 78% of the tested cohort. The percentages of American Indian/Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander in the cohort receiving NGS testing were significantly different than their respective distributions in the reference cohort. Conclusions Characterizing the demographics of patients receiving NGS testing for cancer predisposition and precision oncology using single nucleotide variant data and documented pedigree may help identify potential health disparities.

Object The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy and toxicity of treating arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) with the model 3C Gamma Knife at the University of Washington Medical Center. Methods Ninety-five evaluable patients with 99 treatable AVMs were treated at the University of Washington Medical Center from April 2000 through June 2005. The median patient age at the time of treatment was 40 years (range 6–68 years). The male to female patient ratio was 0.98:1. The median AVM volume treated was 3.8 cm3 (range 0.12–32 cm3). Forty-four percent of the patients had hemorrhaged prior to treatment. The median peripheral Gamma Knife surgery dose was 20 Gy with a median of 12 isocenters treated. The median follow-up duration was 38 months (range 3–91 months). Eighty-one percent of the patients had no previous stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), whereas the remaining 19% had previously been treated with linear accelerator–based SRS. Results The Kaplan–Meier estimated 6-year AVM obliteration rate for the entire cohort was 71.4%. The Kaplan–Meier estimated 6-year obliteration rate was 72% for patients having no prior SRS and 54.5% for those undergoing repeat SRS. The median time to AVM obliteration was 47 months, with 90% of the obliterations occurring between 24 and 58 months. Eight patients (7.4%) experienced late toxicities. There were 2 fatal bleeds and 13 (13.8%) nonfatal bleeds after Gamma Knife surgery. Conclusions Gamma Knife surgery is an effective treatment for AVMs, resulting in an excellent obliteration rate with acceptable toxicity.

Abstract:Health and medical informatics education has meanwhile gained considerable importance for medicine and for health care. Specialized programs in health/medical informatics have therefore been established within the last decades.This special issue of Methods of Information in Medicine contains papers on health and medical informatics education. It is mainly based on selected papers from the 5th Working Conference on Health/Medical Informatics Education of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), which was held in September 1992 at the University of Heidelberg/Technical School Heilbronn, Germany, as part of the 20 years’ celebration of medical informatics education at Heidelberg/Heilbronn. Some papers were presented on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the health information science program of the School of Health Information Science at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Within this issue, programs in health/medical informatics are presented and analyzed: the medical informatics program at the University of Utah, the medical informatics program of the University of Heidelberg/School of Technology Heilbronn, the health information science program at the University of Victoria, the health informatics program at the University of Minnesota, the health informatics management program at the University of Manchester, and the health information management program at the University of Alabama. They all have in common that they are dedicated curricula in health/medical informatics which are university-based, leading to an academic degree in this field. In addition, views and recommendations for health/medical informatics education are presented. Finally, the question is discussed, whether health and medical informatics can be regarded as a separate discipline with the necessity for specialized curricula in this field.In accordance with the aims of IMIA, the intention of this special issue is to promote the further development of health and medical informatics education in order to contribute to high quality health care and medical research.
