AbstractThe maritime environment presents a unique set of challenges to search and recovery (SAR) operations. There is a paucity of information available to guide provision of medical support for SAR operations for aircraft disasters at sea. The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) took part in two such SAR operations in 2014 which showcased the value of a military organization in these operations. Key considerations in medical support for similar operations include the resultant casualty profile and challenges specific to the maritime environment, such as large distances of area of operations from land, variable sea states, and space limitations. Medical support planning can be approached using well-established disaster management life cycle phases of preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery, which all are described in detail. This includes key areas of dedicated training and exercises, force protection, availability of air assets and chamber support, psychological care, and the forensic handling of human remains. The Impact

The WindFloat prototype is a semisubmersible type foundation supporting a 2 MW, 3 bladed, horizontal axis Vestas V-80 turbine. The 8-year project is near its completion. After 3 years of planning, engineering and fabrication, the prototype was installed in 2011 in the northern Portugal Atlantic waters. Following 5 years of operations and electricity production, the unit was decommissioned in the summer of 2016. This paper retraces the prototype project going back to the early objectives, focusing on its 5-year performance and lessons learned. The overall assessment of the impact of the prototype on the incoming pre-commercial projects is discussed. Some emphasis is placed on both the decommissioning of the unit and the economics of the project, as these have not yet been published.

Chapter 4 uses the differences between LEED, Green Globes, the Living Building Challenge, and ENERGY STAR to highlight the methodological issues associated with information-based governance. The chapter introduces the concepts of replicability, reliability, and validity, and applies them in an analysis of the transparency and quality of the data and methods used in existing information-based initiatives. The importance of life cycle approaches to developing valid environmental information about products and companies is also discussed. With a few important exceptions, data from 245 cases of these initiatives demonstrates their general lack of methodological transparency and validity, and highlight the challenges associated with developing robust metrics of sustainability. The chapter discusses several important tradeoffs between different dimensions of validity, and suggests several strategies for managing these tradeoffs. It also identifies the most promising and problematic information generation practices found in the database and the lessons learned from these examples.
