Aims.Mental health stigma and discrimination are significant problems. Common coping orientations include: concealing mental health problems, challenging others and educating others. We describe the use of common stigma coping orientations and explain variations within a sample of English mental health service users.Methods.Cross-sectional survey data were collected as part of the Viewpoint survey of mental health service users’ experiences of discrimination (n = 3005). Linear regression analyses were carried out to identify factors associated with the three stigma coping orientations.Results.The most common coping orientation was to conceal mental health problems (73%), which was strongly associated with anticipated discrimination. Only 51% ever challenged others because of discriminating behaviour, this being related to experienced discrimination, but also to higher confidence to tackle stigma.Conclusions.Although stigma coping orientations vary by context, individuals often choose to conceal problems, which is associated with greater anticipated and experienced discrimination and less confidence to challenge stigma. The direction of this association requires further investigation.

Background: Public expenditure on mental health education has grown exponentially in the past two decades. Does the experience of stigma among people with mental health problems improve over time? Our study aims to compare the levels of perceived stigmatization, rejection experiences and stigma–coping among mental health service users in Hong Kong between 2001 and 2017 using longitudinal and repeated cross-sectional study design. Method: The baseline survey was completed by 193 psychiatric outpatients in 2001. They were traced for re-assessment in 2017. Another sample of 193 outpatients matched in age, gender and psychiatric diagnosis was recruited in 2017 for cross-sectional comparison. Participants completed a 39-item questionnaire on stigma experiences, Beck Depression Inventory and Disability Assessment Schedule at both time points. Results: In total, 109 of 193 participants (56.5%) of the 2001 survey were re-assessed. No significant change in perceived stigmatization, rejection experiences and stigma–coping was found among the 109 participants interviewed in 2001 and 2017. For cross-sectional comparison, significant differences in two perceived stigma items were observed upon Bonferroni correction (chi-square test, p < .005) and remained significant after controlling for confounding factors by regression analysis. Improvements in perceived stigmatization were on marriage and friendship, while viewpoints on trustworthiness, dangerousness, devaluation, avoidance and personal failure remained unchanged, and there was no improvement in rejection experiences and stigma–coping. Conclusion: Positive attitude changes over time are unlikely to occur if there is no targeted intervention on stigma. Our findings highlight that evidence-based antistigma interventions are urgently needed.

Prevalensi penduduk Indonesia yang menderita gangguan mental emosional mengalami peningkatan, dimana prevalensi sebesar 6% pada tahun 2013 meningkat menjadi 9,8% pada tahun 2018. Pelayanan kesehatan jiwa bagi setiap orang dengan masalah kejiwaan (ODMK) belum diwujudkan secara optimal di wilayah Kecamatan Bogor Timur. Masih sedikit ODMK yang memanfaatkan pelayanan kesehatan jiwaTujuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan literasi kesehatan mental dengan pemanfaatan pelayanan kesehatan jiwa.Metode. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain cross-sectional dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Responden adalah orang dengan masalah kejiwaan yang bertempat tinggal di Kecamatan Bogor Timur. Teknik multistage random sampling digunakan untuk memilih 139 responden. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara menggunakan kuesioner. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji regresi logistik ganda.Hasil. Nilai rerata literasi kesehatan mental sebesar 73,08 (skala 100). Sebanyak 56,1% ODMK telah memanfaatkan pelayanan kesehatan jiwa dan 57,6% responden berumur ≥30 tahun. Pada mereka yang mempunyai literasi kesehatan mental tinggi, sebanyak 64,9% telah memanfaatkan pelayanan kesehatan jiwa. Hasil analisis multivariat menunjukkan hubungan signifikan antara literasi kesehatan mental dengan perilaku pemanfaatan pelayanan kesehatan jiwa pada ODMK setelah variabel jenis kelamin dan ketersediaan pelayanan kesehatan jiwa dikendalikan.Kesimpulan. Orang dengan literasi kesehatan mental yang tinggi cenderung memanfaatkan pelayanan kesehatan jiwa dibanding dengan mereka dengan literasi rendah.  ABSTRACTBackground. In Indonesia, prevalence of emotional mental disorder has increased from 6% in 2013 to 9.8% in 2018. Mental health service has not optimally utilized by people with mental health problems in East Bogor sub-district. Objective. This study aimed to determine the relationship of mental health literacy with mental health service use. Method. This study used a cross sectional design with a quantitative approach. Respondents were people with mental health problems who lived in East Bogor Sub-District. A total of 139 respondents were selected using multistage random sampling technique. Data were collected by in-person interview using a questionnaire. Data were analysed using a multiple logistic regression test for multivariate model selection. Results. The results of this study showed that the mean score of mental health literacy was 73.08 (scale of 100). There were 56.1% respondents utilized mental health services. As many as 57.6% respondents aged ≥30 years. Among those who have high mental health literacy, 64.9% of them have utilized mental health services.  Results from multivariate analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between mental health literacy and the use of mental health service in people with mental health problems, after adjustment with gender and mental health service availability.Conclusion. People with high mental health literacy tended to use mental health services compared to those with low literacy.

Aims and methodTo examine the effects of implementing the individual placement and support (IPS) approach within four community mental health teams (CMHTs). Demographic, clinical and vocational data were collected through a repeated cross-sectional survey. Additionally, a service user experience survey was conducted.ResultsThe IPS approach appears to have a significant effect on the employment rates of service users; a higher proportion felt able to return to employment and a smaller proportion believed they were unable to work because of their mental health problems. Employment rates for service users appear to be independent of general employment rates.Clinical implicationsImplementing IPS appears to increase the employment rates in CMHTs resulting in increased service user expectations of being able to return to work.

Abstract Background The time of widespread outbreaks of infectious diseases can lead to elevated stress and mental health problems among all persons affected, and in particular those sub-groups of the population that are at an increased risk of mental health problems. One such vulnerable group constitutes university students. The aim of this study is to assess stress, depression, anxiety, and suicidality among different groups of university students (medical, psychology, and other). Methods Using a repeated cross-sectional study design, we collected survey data among a large sample of 7228 university students from Poland (mean age = 22.78, s.d. = 4.40; 81% female). Data were collected in five waves, during the first 2 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe (March and April 2020). Results The results demonstrate a significant increase in depression levels as the pandemic was progressing. We also found that female students scored significantly higher than male students on depression, anxiety, and stress. Psychology students recorded the lowest scores on depression and anxiety. Young adult students (aged 18–24 years) had more symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidality than adult students (⩾25 years). Conclusions These results provide insights into stress and mental health among university students during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings can be used for a more effective identification of students who may struggle during next stages of the pandemic and future crises.
