Unfortunately this is not the long-awaited textbook in economic demography. Indeed, it is not so much a text - a survey and introduction to the area - as it is a collection of essays on particular topics, often quite advanced and difficult for all but advanced students to follow. Also, the volume should, in all fairness, be subtitled "A Chicago Approach" since the philosophical and theoretical orientation as well as the methodological framework presented is totally that of the Becker Nerlove Chicago School. Easterlin, Leibenstein and the other non Chicago writers are mentioned only in passing. Thus, a beginner to the field would gel no feeling for the enormous, far-ranging controversies which continue to rage.

This article examines the first decades of the field of ethnohistory as it developed in the United States. It participated in the general rapprochement between history and anthropology of mid-twentieth-century social science. However, unlike parallel developments in Europe and in other research areas, ethnohistory specifically arose out of the study of American Indian communities in the era of the Indian Claims Commission. Thus ethnohistory developed from a pragmatic rather than a theoretical orientation, with practitioners testifying both in favor of and against claims. Methodology was flexible, with both documentary sources and ethnographic methods employed to the degree that each was feasible. One way that ethnohistory was innovative was the degree to which women played prominent roles in its development. By the end of the first decade, the field was becoming broader and more willing to engage both theoretical and ethical issues raised by the foundational work. In particular, the geographic scope began to reach well beyond North America, especially to Latin America, where archival resources and the opportunities for ethnographic research were plentiful, but also to areas such as Melanesia, where recent European contact allowed researchers to observe the early postcontact period directly and to address the associated theoretical questions with greater authority. Ethnohistory is thus an important example of a field of study that grew organically without an overarching figure or conscious plan but that nevertheless came to engage central issues in cultural and historical analysis.

BACKGROUND: A number of variables have been shown to influence whether an individual who experiences an emergency psychiatric assessment is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. This study focused on the theoretical orientation of the assessing clinician as a possibly influential variable. The theoretical orientation being studied was Bowen family systems theory or Bowen theory (Bt). Overall the Bt perspective looks at the family as the primary crucible that generates symptoms but at the same time as the natural unit and the best built-in resource to deal with those symptoms. AIMS: This study examined whether the theoretical orientation of the nurse psychiatric assessor would affect her inpatient admission rate of patients seen for psychiatric evaluation in an emergency department (ED). METHOD: A clinician/researcher with extensive experience applying Bt in clinical practice worked in a Crisis Management Service providing psychiatric evaluation and disposition in a busy community hospital ED. Given Bt’s emphasis on the system rather than individual pathology, the clinician researcher hypothesized that her psychiatric hospitalization rate would be lower than the other clinical nurse specialists. A retrospective chart review analyzed 1 year of cases from all referrals that might have resulted in psychiatric hospitalizations ( n = 1,801). RESULTS: The clinician/researcher’s psychiatric hospitalization rate was significantly lower ( p = .004) than the other clinicians. CONCLUSION: An approach to psychiatric assessment in the ED applied a Bt perspective in a way that significantly reduced psychiatric hospitalizations.

The evaluation and representation of the orientation workspace of robotic manipulators is a challenging task. This work focuses on the determination of the theoretical orientation workspace of the Gough–Stewart platform with given leg length ranges [ρimin,ρimax]. By use of the roll-pitch-yaw angles (ϕ,θ,ψ), the theoretical orientation workspace at a prescribed position P0 can be defined by up to 12 workspace surfaces. The defined orientation workspace is a closed region in the 3D orientation Cartesian space Oϕθψ. As all rotations R(x,ϕ), R(y,θ), and R(z,ψ) take place with respect to the fixed frame, any point of the defined orientation workspace provides a clear measure for the platform to, respectively, rotate in order around the (x,y,z) axes of the fixed frame. An algorithm is presented to compute the size (volume) of the theoretical orientation workspace and intersectional curves of the workspace surfaces. The defined theoretical orientation workspace can be applied to determine a singularity-free orientation workspace.

Given the increasing interest in alliance portfolios, alliance portfolio diversity (APD) has been the focus of many recent studies. Yet, the performance consequences of APD—or of diversity in general—are neither theoretically clear nor empirically consistent. With meta-analytic analyses, we assess extant research on the APD–performance link. Across studies, APD has a positive impact on performance, although the level of analysis and how performance is measured influence the relationship. Going beyond conventional quantitative synthesis, however, we also systematically uncover patterns in how theoretical orientation and the operationalization of diversity moderate the APD–performance relationship. Our study serves as an invitation for future APD studies to employ more sophisticated theoretical and operationalization approaches as they expand our knowledge of diversity in alliance portfolios.
