A total of 38 morphometric characters of the round goby Neogobius melanostomus melanostomus (Pallas, 1814) were studied in its native range in the Sea of Azov. The aim was to assess joint effect of sexual dimorphism and size variability on overall variability within groups of samples (populations) using appropriate methods of traditional statistical analysis (one-dimensional and multivariate statistics). Sex and size-dependent variability was studied based on model samples of males and females of different size. Most of the studied morphometric characters of round goby from the Sea of Azov demonstrated statistically significant sex- and size-dependent in-group variability. The pattern of the variability suggests that, for a comparison of round goby from different sea regions and between populations, separate samples of males and females within the range 9–13 cm SL should be examined in order to minimise the effect of the size and sex factors. The approach of searching for the most informative size range could be useful not only for further studies of infraspecific variation but for comparisons between morphologically close gobiin species.

Abstract Aim The diagnostic workup in patients with delayed motor milestones suspected of having either myopathy or a congenital myasthenic syndrome is complex. Our hypothesis was that performance of a muscle biopsy and neurophysiology including stimulated single-fiber electromyography during an anesthetic procedure, combined with genetic testing has a high diagnostic quality. Materials and Methods Clinical and paraclinical data were retrospectively collected from 24 patients aged from 1 month to 10 years (median: 5.2 years). Results Neurophysiology examination was performed in all patients and was abnormal in 11 of 24. No patients had findings suggestive of a myasthenic syndrome. Muscle biopsy was performed in 21 of 24 and was normal in 16. Diagnostic findings included nemaline rods, inclusion bodies, fiber size variability, and type-II fiber atrophy. Genetic testing with either a gene panel or exome sequencing was performed in 18 of 24 patients, with pathogenic variants detected in ACTA1, NEB, SELENON, GRIN2B, SCN8A, and COMP genes. Conclusion Results supporting a neuromuscular abnormality were found in 15 of 24. In six patients (25%), we confirmed a genetic diagnosis and 12 had a clinical neuromuscular diagnosis. The study suggests that combined use of neurophysiology and muscle biopsy in cases where genetic testing does not provide a diagnosis can be useful in children with delayed motor milestones and clinical evidence of a neuromuscular disease.

AbstractIn this study, snow particle size variability was investigated along a transect in Dronning Maud Land from the coast to the polar plateau. The aim of the study was to better understand the spatial and temporal variations in surface snow properties. Samples were collected twice daily during a traverse in 2007–08 to capture regional variability. Local variability was assessed by sampling in 10×10 m grids (5 m spacing) at selected locations. The particle size and shape distributions for each site were analysed through digital image analysis. Snow particle size variability is complex at different scales, and shows an internal variability of 0.18–3.31 mm depending on the sample type (surface, grid or pit). Relationships were verified between particle size and both elevation and distance to the coast (moisture source). Regional seasonal changes were also identified, particularly on the lower elevations of the polar plateau. This dataset may be used to quantitatively analyse the optical properties of surface snow for remote sensing. The details of the spatial and temporal variations observed in our data provide a basis for further studies of the complex and coupled processes affecting snow particle size and the interpretation of remote sensing of snow covered areas.

Kinetochore structure was examined in a total of 6 species from 5 different families of the Coleoptera using transmission electron microscopy of ultrathin serial sections. Metaphase spermatogonia and primary and secondary spermatocytes were studied in Tenebrio molitor (Tenebrionidae) to determine whether kinetochore structure varies depending on the cell type. In all three cell types, the kinetochore microtubules (MTs) were in direct contact with the chromosomal surface, and kinetochore plates were not detectable. In the other species, only metaphase I spermatocytes were examined. As in T. molitor, distinct kinetochore plates were also absent in Adelocera murina (Elateridae), Agapanthia villosoviridescens (Cerambycidae), and Coccinella septempunctata (Coccinellidae). However, bivalents in male meiosis of two representatives of the Chrysomelidae, Agelastica alni and Chrysolina graminis, showed roughly spherical kinetochores at their poleward surfaces. Microtubules were in contact with this material. Thus, although the present survey covers only a small number of species, it is clear that at least two kinetochore types occur in the Coleoptera. The cytological findings are discussed in the context of chromosome number and genome size variability in the Coleopteran families studied. It is suggested that properties of the kinetochores could play a role in karyotype evolution in the Coleoptera.Key words: bivalent, microtubule, meiosis, metaphase, spermatocyte.
