AbstractThe use of metamaterial as a way to mitigate the negative effects of absorption in metals on the Purcell effect in metal-dielectric structures is investigated. A layered metal-dielectric structure is considered as an anisotropic medium in the long-wavelength limit. The dispersion of the surface plasmon appearing at the boundary between such a structure and a different dielectric material, as well as the position of the peak in the local density of states are studied for various combinations of materials and filling factors of the periodic structure. The calculated frequency dependence of the Purcell factor demonstrates an increase in peak value compared to the conventional plasmonic structure. The results obtained using effective media approach are compared to the results of numerical modelling.

The dependence of the Purcell factor on nanowire metamaterial geometry was analyzed. Calculations made about the Purcell factor in realistic composites, operating at an optical spectral range, are provided. We applied a metamaterial, aiming to mitigate the negative effects of absorption in metals on the Purcell effect in nanowire structures. A nanowire metamaterial was treated as an anisotropic composite in the long-wavelength limit. We investigated the mode patterns of the surface waves, propagating at the boundary separating such a structure and a dielectric material, along with the position of the peak in the local density of states, for the various filling factors of the periodic structure. By calculating the frequency dependence of the Purcell factor, we showed an increase in the peak value in comparison with the conventional plasmonic structure in the (1–100 THz) frequency range. Moreover, an optimal set of the parameters, needed to obtain the two topological transitions in the frequency range under investigation, is proposed.

As the fundamental and promising branch of nanophotonics, surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) with the ability of manipulating the electromagnetic field on the subwavelength scale are of interest to a wide spectrum of scientists. Composed of metallic or dielectric structures whose shape and position are carefully engineered on the metal surface, traditional SPP devices are generally static and lack tunability. Dynamical manipulation of SPP is meaningful in both fundamental research and practical applications. In this article, the achievements in dynamical SPP excitation, SPP focusing, SPP vortex, and SPP nondiffracting beams are presented. The mechanisms of dynamical SPP devices are revealed and compared, and future perspectives are discussed.

Local density approximation (LDA) +U within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) was used to study the properties of vacancy and self-interstitial atom (SIA) in δ-Pu. The results show that mono-vacancy, di-vacancy and tri-vacancy existing in δ-Pu shift rightward the f shell peak of the projected density of states (PDOS), the peak values of mono-vacancy and di-vacancy decrease, while the peak value of tri-vacancy increases. The saddle point during vacancy migration shifts leftward the f shell peak of PDOS, and the peak value decreases. The octahedral SIA, the tetrahedral SIA, the split SIA shift leftward the f shell peak of PDOS, and the peak values decreases. Finally, the recombination behavior of vacancy and SIA were studied at both the spin-restricted and the spin-unrestricted level, SIA migrates to vacancy site, and exhibits a tendency to forming the perfect fcc structure.
