Colloidal silica (silica sol) nanoparticles were synthesized by ammonia- and hydrochloric acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane with subsequent condensation and polymerization. Silica particles with the size of 12‒160 nm were obtained at different temperatures and ratios of the initial reactants and studied by means of TEM, AFM, IR spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements. The reaction conditions providing the minimum particle size in the final product of the most complete hydrolysis were determined. At pH above 8.5, an increase in the SiO2 content of the sol to 23 wt.% did not change the particle size. At a low (~ 1.8 wt.%) SiO2 content of the sol, a wide variation in pH also did not exert a significant effect on the particle size. Stability of the silica sols synthesized in an alkaline medium was enhanced by the replacement of alcohol with water during evaporation at pH 8.5‒9.5. The possibility to produce silica sols with the required characteristics (particle size, pH, stability, purity, and SiO2 content in an aqueous or alcohol medium) makes them applicable in various industries.

Brønsted acids catalyze a multicomponent reaction of benzaldehyde with amines and diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to afford highly functionalized γ-lactam derivatives. The reaction consists of a Mannich reaction of an enamine to an imine, both generated in situ, promoted by a phosphoric acid catalyst and a subsequent intramolecular cyclization. The hydrolysis of the cyclic enamine substrate can provide enol derivatives and, moreover, a second attack of the amine on the carboxylate can afford amide derivatives. An optimization of the reaction conditions is presented in order to obtain selectively cyclic enamines that can afford the enol species after selective hydrolysis.

Nanocrystalline TiO2 with pure rutile and pure anatase phases was prepared at moderate reaction temperatures by hydrolysis of TiCl4 in different air- and water-stable ionic liquids with the same anion ([Py1,4]Tf2N, [EMIM]Tf2N, and [P14,6,6,6]Tf2N), in isopropanol and in cosolvent of ionic liquid/isopropanol under different reaction conditions. The type of cation in the ionic liquid influences the morphology of the rutile phase: cone-like morphology was obtained in the case of [Py1,4]+ and [P14,6,6,6]+ ions and wormhole-like in the case of [EMIM]+. In the case of anatase, no significant effect was found. The influence of various reaction conditions like acidity of solution, solvent type, precursor type, and precursor concentration on the phase formation and morphology of titania were investigated.

AbstractRecently, conversion of lignocellulose into useful substances has attracted increasing attention. In our previous investigations, microcrystalline cellulose was successfully converted to methyl glucopyranosides (MeGlc) by the combined use of ionic liquid (IL) and microwave irradiation under moderate reaction conditions. In this study, lignocelluloses, including softwood, hardwood, and rice straw, were directly converted to methyl glycopyranosides (MG), including MeGlc, methyl mannopyranosides (MeMan), and methyl xylopyranosides (MeXyl) using acid-catalyzed methanolysis under microwave irradiation in ILs. Lignocellulose ball-milling was quite effective as a crucial process of increasing the yield of MG. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the molar yield of MeGlc reached 40% from softwood, which was a comparable yield from microcrystalline cellulose. MeXyl was also obtained in a 48% yield. These results showed that the combination of the dissolution of ball-milled lignocellulose in IL and the microwave-assisted methanolysis was an effective method of converting lignocellulose into a high-value-added substance.

A simple, straightforward and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of (E)-3-(arylimino)indolin-2-one derivatives and (E)-2-((4-methoxyphenyl)imino)- acenaphthylen-1(2H)-one. The synthesis of these biologically-significant scaffolds was achieved from the reactions of various substituted anilines and isatins or acenaphthaquinone, respectively, using commercially available, environmentally benign and naturally occurring organic acids such as mandelic acid or itaconic acid as catalyst in aqueous medium at room temperature. Mild reaction conditions, energy efficiency, good to excellent yields, environmentally benign conditions, easy isolation of products, no need of column chromatographic separation and the reusability of reaction media are some of the significant features of the present protocol.
