We firstly found that basic MgO can serve as an excellent support for Pd catalysts for CO oxidative coupling to DMO and further developed a low Pd loading (ca. 0.5 wt%) Pd/MgO catalyst with high activity, selectivity and stability.

A new method of sustainable ethanol synthesis by hydrogenating dimethyl oxalate (DMO), which is easily obtained from syngas, over a Cu/SiO2catalyst is proposed based on previous works. The experimental results indicate that the Cu/SiO2catalyst exhibited a high activity under the relative mild conditions of 270°C and 2MPa with ethanol selectivity as high as 88% and extremely high DMO conversion.

In this work, γ-Al2O3coated ceramic membrane (CM) was prepared by dip-coating technique and used as a catalyst support for biodiesel production. The effects of the properties of the slurry were investigated on the γ-Al2O3coating. KF/Al2O3/CM was prepared by γ-Al2O3/CM impragnated with KF solution. The samples were studied in the transesterification of palm oil with methanol. Experimental results showed that the solid content and density of the aluminum sol had significant influences on the amount and stability of the γ-Al2O3coating. KF/γ-Al2O3/CM showed a high activity and reusability in the transesterification. This work provided a way to prepare alkaline ceramic membrane which can be used in the membrane reactor to produce biodiesel.

The electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of octyl aldehyde (octanal) to octyl alcohol (octan-1-ol) was investigated using commercial Pd/alumina catalysts in aqueous ethanol. The influence of different parameters, such as catalyst support, current intensity, polarity of solvent, supporting electrolyte, and octanal concentration, on the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of octanal was studied.Key words: octanal, octan-1-ol, Pd/alumina catalyst, electrocatalytic hydrogenation.
