In recent years, N-heterocyclic carboxylate ligands have attracted much interest in the preparation of new coordination polymers since they contain N-atom donors, as well as O-atom donors, and have a rich variety of coordination modes which can lead to polymers with intriguing structures and interesting properties. A new two-dimensional coordination polymer, namely poly[[μ3-2,2′-(1,2-phenylene)bis(4-carboxy-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylato)-κ6 O 4,N 3,N 3′,O 4′:O 5:O 5′]manganese(II)], [Mn(C16H8N4O8)] n or [Mn(H4Phbidc)] n , has been synthesized by the reaction of Mn(OAc)2·4H2O (OAc is acetate) with 2,2′-(1,2-phenylene)bis(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) (H6Phbidc) under solvothermal conditions. In the polymer, each MnII ion is six-coordinated by two N atoms from one H4Phbidc2− ligand and by four O atoms from three H4Phbidc2− ligands, forming a significantly distorted octahedral MnN2O4 coordination geometry. The MnII ions are linked by hexadentate H4Phbidc2− ligands, leading to a two-dimensional structure parallel to the ac plane. In the crystal, adjacent layers are further connected by N—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure in the solid state.

Much attention has been paid by chemists to the construction of supramolecular coordination compounds based on the multifunctional ligand 5-sulfosalicylic acid (H3SSA) due to the structural and biological interest of these compounds. However, no coordination compounds have been reported for the multifunctional amino-substituted sulfobenzoate ligand 2-amino-5-sulfobenzoic acid (H2asba). We expected that H2asba could be a suitable building block for the assembly of supramolecular networks due to its interesting structural characteristics. The reaction of cadmium(II) nitrate with H2asba in the presence of the auxiliary flexible dipyridylamide ligandN,N′-bis[(pyridin-4-yl)methyl]oxamide (4bpme) under ambient conditions formed a new mixed-ligand coordination compound, namely bis(3-amino-4-carboxybenzenesulfonato-κO1)diaquabis{N,N′-bis[(pyridin-4-yl)methyl]oxamide-κN}cadmium(II)–N,N′-bis[(pyridin-4-yl)methyl]oxamide–water (1/1/4), [Cd(C7H6NO5S)2(C14H14N4O2)2(H2O)2]·C14H14N4O2·4H2O, (1), which was characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD), FT–IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and UV–Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopic analyses in the solid state. The central CdIIatom in (1) occupies a special position on a centre of inversion and exhibits a slightly distorted octahedral geometry, being coordinated by two N atoms from two monodentate 4bpme ligands, four O atoms from two monodentate 4-amino-3-carboxybenzenesulfonate (Hasba−) ligands and two coordinated water molecules. Interestingly, complex (1) further extends into a threefold polycatenated 0D→2D (0D is zero-dimensional and 2D is two-dimensional) interpenetrated supramolecular two-dimensional (4,4) layer through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The interlayer hydrogen bonding further links adjacent threefold polycatenated two-dimensional layers into a three-dimensional network. The optical properties of complex (1) indicate that it may be used as a potential indirect band gap semiconductor material. Complex (1) exhibits an irreversible dehydration–rehydration behaviour. The fluorescence properties have also been investigated in the solid state at room temperature.

AbstractA new Cd(II) coordination polymer, [Cd(CNA)]n (1) (H2CNA = 3-(carboxymethoxy)-2-naphthoic acid), was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c with a = 16.9698(18), b = 7.8314(8), c = 8.9553(10) Å, β = 100.657(2)°, V = 1169.6(2) Å3, Z = 4, Dcalcd. = 2.03 g cm−3, μ(MoKα) = 1.9 mm−1, F(000) = 696 e, R = 0.0305, wR = 0.0784 for 172 refined parameters and 2285 data. Each CNA anion bridges three Cd(II) cations to give rise to a two-dimensional network structure. Topologically, if each CNA anion is regarded as a linker, and each Cd(II) atom considered as a 4-conencted node, the structure is simplified as a 4-connected (4,4) network. The solid state photoluminescent properties of the compound were also studied at room temperature.

A novel two-dimensional CdII coordination framework, poly[[[μ-1,3-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene-κ2 N:N′](μ-1,3-phenylenediacetato-κ4 O,O′:O′′,O′′′)cadmium(II)] dihydrate], {[Cd(C10H8O4)(C14H14N4)]·2H2O} n or {[Cd(PDA)(1,3-BMIB)]·2H2O} n [1,3-BMIB is 1,3-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene and H2PDA is 1,3-phenylenediacetic acid], has been prepared and characterized using IR, elemental analysis, thermal analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, the latter revealing that the compound is a (4,4) grid coordination polymer with layers oriented parallel to the bc crystal planes. In the crystal, adjacent layers are further connected by O—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure in the solid state. In addition, the compound exhibits strong fluorescence emissions and shows photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue in the solid state at room temperature.

Multidentate N-heterocyclic compounds form a variety of metal complexes with many intriguing structures and interesting properties. The title coordination polymer,catena-poly[zinc(II)-bis{μ-2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazole}-κ2N3:N3′;N3′:N3-zinc(II)-bis(μ-benzene-1,2-dicarboxylato)-κ2O1:O2;κ3O1,O1′:O2], [Zn2(C8H4O4)2(C11H10N4)2]n, has been synthesized by the reaction of Zn(NO3)2with 2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazole (imb) and benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid (H2bdic) under hydrothermal conditions. There are two crystallographically distinct imb ligands [imb(A) and imb(B)] in the structure which adopt very similar coordination geometries. The imb(A) ligand bridges two symmetry-related Zn1 ions, yielding a binuclear [(Zn1)2{imb(A)}2] unit, and the imb(B) ligand bridges two symmetry-related Zn2 ions resulting in a binuclear [(Zn2)2{imb(B)}2] unit. The above-mentioned binuclear units are further connected alternately by pairs of bridging bdic2−ligands, forming an infinite one-dimensional chain. These one-dimensional chains are further connected through N—H...O hydrogen bonds, leading to a two-dimensional layered structure. In addition, the title polymer exhibits good fluorescence properties in the solid state at room temperature.

In the coordination polymer, poly[[{μ-1-[(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole-κ2N:N′}(μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-κ2O1:O3)zinc(II)] dimethylformamide monosolvate pentahydrate], {[Zn(C9H4O6)(C11H10N4)]·C3H7NO·5H2O}n, the ZnIIion is coordinated by two N atoms from two symmetry-related 1-[(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole (bmi) ligands and two O atoms from two symmetry-related 5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate (Hbtc2−) ligands in a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The ZnIIions are bridged by Hbtc2−and bmi ligands, leading to a 4-connected two-dimensional network with the topological notation (44.62). Adjacent layers are further connected by 12 kinds of hydrogen bonds and also by π–π interactions, resulting in a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture in the solid state.
