Here, we have demonstrated that the presence of a carbonyl group at C7 position is preventing the olefin metathesis of endo-norbornene derivatives due to the complexation of the metal alkylidene. Time-dependent NMR studies showed the presence of new proton signals in the metal alkylidene region, which indicate the formation of metal complex with the carbonyl group of the substrate. These observations were further proved by ESI-MS analysis. Whereas, computational studies provided that the catalyst was interacting with the C7 carbonyl group and aligned perpendicular to that of norbornene olefin. Later, these endo-keto norbornene derivatives were reduced to hydroxyl derivatives diastereoselectively. Ring-rearrangement metathesis (RRM) of these hydroxyl derivatives, produced the [6/5/6], and [5/6/5] carbo-tricyclic cores of the natural products in one step. Whereas the RRM of O-allyl derivatives, delivered the oxa-tricyclic compounds in a single step with excellent yields.

SummaryIschaemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) poses a major challenge in many thrombotic conditions and in whole organ transplantation. Activation of the endothelial cells and shedding of the protective vascular glycocalyx during IRI increase the risk of innate immune activation, cell infiltration and severe thrombus formation, promoting damage to the tissue. Here, we present a novel one-step strategy to protect the vasculature by immobilisation of a unique multi-arm heparin conjugate to the endothelium. Applying a new in vitro blood endothelial cell chamber model, the heparin conjugate was found to bind not only to primary human endothelial cells but also directly to the collagen to which the cells adhered. Incubation of hypoxic endothelial cells with freshly drawn human blood in the blood chambers elicited coagulation activation reflected by thrombin anti-thrombin formation and binding of platelets and neutrophils. Immobilisation of the heparin conjugate to the hypoxic endothelial cells created a protective coating, leading to a significant reduction of the recruitment of blood cells and coagulation activation compared to untreated hypoxic endothelial cells. This novel approach of immobilising multi-arm heparin conjugates on the endothelial cells and collagen of the basement membrane ensures to protect the endothelium against IRI in thrombotic disorders and in transplantation.

Abstract This paper proposes a novel approach for lossless coding of light field (LF) images based on a macro-pixel (MP) synthesis technique which synthesizes the entire LF image in one step. The reference views used in the synthesis process are selected based on four different view configurations and define the reference LF image. This image is stored as an array of reference MPs which collect one pixel from each reference view, being losslessly encoded as a base layer. A first contribution focuses on a novel network design for view synthesis which synthesizes the entire LF image as an array of synthesized MPs. A second contribution proposes a network model for coding which computes the MP prediction used for lossless encoding of the remaining views as an enhancement layer. Synthesis results show an average distortion of 29.82 dB based on four reference views and up to 36.19 dB based on 25 reference views. Compression results show an average improvement of 29.9% over the traditional lossless image codecs and 9.1% over the state-of-the-art.
