Uniform fluid compartments are formed inside shape-coded amphiphilic particles using simple fluid exchange steps. This lab on a particle system enables multiplexed enzymatic reactions without cross talk to democratize cutting-edge biological assays.

Ribosomes are ribonucleoprotein particles necessary for processing the genetic information of mRNA into proteins. Analogy in composition and function of ribosomes from diverse species, established by biochemical and biological assays, implies their structural similarity. Direct evidence obtained by electron microscopy seems to be of increasing relevance in understanding the structure of ribosomes and the mechanism of their role in protein synthesis.The extent of the structural homology between prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes has been studied on ribosomes of Escherichia coli (E.c.) and Artemia salina (A.s.). Despite the established differences in size and in the amount and proportion of ribosomal proteins and RNAs both types of ribosomes show an overall similarity. The monosomes (stained with 0.5% aqueous uranyl acetate and deposited on a fine carbon support) appear in the electron micrographs as round particles with a diameter of approximately 225Å for the 70S E.c. (Fig. 1) and 260Å for the 80S A.s. monosome (Fig. 2).

Herz und Nierenfunktion sind eng miteinander verknüpft. Ein Großteil der Patienten mit chronischer Herzinsuffizienz leidet gleichzeitig an einer Nierenfunktionsstörung. Diese ist kausal an der Entwicklung der Herzinsuffizienz beteiligt und stellt damit einen wichtigen prognostischen Faktor dar. Pathophysiologisch kommt es durch die verminderte renale Perfusion zu einer Aktivierung verschiedener Regelkreise, die eine Salz- und Wasserretention induzieren und damit das Fortschreiten der Herzinsuffizienz begünstigen. Therapeutische Ziele sind die Euvolämie sowie die kontrollierte Behandlung mittels prognostisch relevanter, kardialer Begleitmedikation. Können diese beiden Ziele aufgrund von Therapieresistenz, progredienter Niereninsuffizienz oder Therapie-Nebenwirkungen nicht erreicht werden, ist die Indikation für ein Nierenersatzverfahren gegeben. Prinzipiell können alle heute verfügbaren Verfahren angewendet werden. Die Auswahl der Modalität sollte jedoch an die individuelle Situation des Patienten angepasst und interdisziplinär besprochen werden. Obwohl sich unter Therapie bei allen Nierenersatzverfahren funktionelle und subjektive Verbesserungen nachweisen lassen, ist deren Einfluss auf die Langzeitprognose ungeklärt.

Among the roughly 150 Italian songbooks published between 1610 and 1665 with the guitar tablature known as alfabeto, about thirteen are anthologies. These anthologies often advertise the role of a compiler who has gathered together music by diverse authors. The extent to which compilers also functioned as authors and editors is not well understood. This essay considers the case of Giovanni Stefani, a compiler who, in the preface to his Scherzi amorosi of 1622, describes the anthology as a collection of his choosing that contains “varie compositioni de Virtuosi della prima classe” (various compositions of first-class virtuosos). Intriguingly, none of the settings Stefani prints (in both this alfabeto anthology and two others) include attributions. Since the 1880s, scholars have been preoccupied with matters of transmission and attribution, unearthing a network of textual and musical concordances. This article expands the nexus of Stefani’s songs and their concordant sources, revealing an array of examples that range from identical copies to “partial” concordances that take over motives, phrases, refrains, or harmonic schemes. These examples indicate that in preparing his anthologies, Stefani mined a corpus of existing prints and manuscripts while also relying heavily on oral transmission. The complex nature of Stefani’s approach, taken together with his complete avoidance of composer attributions, points toward an editorial process shaped by a fluid exchange between oral and written musical practices.
