Redox-active covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for energy storage devices because of their high density of redox sites, permanent and controlled porosity, high surface areas, and tunable structures. However, the low electrochemical accessibility of their redox-active sites has limited COF-based devices either to thin films (<250 nm) grown on conductive substrates, or to thicker films (1 µm) when a conductive polymer is introduced into the COF pores. Electrical energy storage devices constructed from bulk microcrystalline COF powders, eliminating the need for both thin-film formation and conductive polymer guests, would offer both improved capacity and potentially scalable fabrication processes. Here we report on the synthesis and electrochemical evaluation of a new phenazine-based 2D COF (DAPH-TFP COF), as well as its composite with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Both the COF and its PEDOT composite were evaluated as powders that were solution-cast onto bulk electrodes serving as current collectors. The unmodified DAPH-TFP COF exhibited excellent electrical access to its redox sites, even without PEDOT functionalization, and outperformed the PEDOT composite of a previously reported anthraquinone-based system. Devices containing DAPH-TFP COF were able to deliver both high energy (250 Wh/kg) and power densities (2950 W/kg), validating the promise of unmodified redox-active COFs that are easily incorporated into electrical energy storage devices.

Energy storage devices such as batteries hold great importance for society, owing to their high energy density, environmental benignity and low cost. However, critical issues related to their performance and safety still need to be resolved. The periodic table of elements is pivotal to chemistry, physics, biology and engineering and represents a remarkable scientific breakthrough that sheds light on the fundamental laws of nature. Here, we provide an overview of the role of the most prominent elements, including s-block, p-block, transition and inner-transition metals, as electrode materials for lithium-ion battery systems regarding their perspective applications and fundamental properties. We also outline hybrid materials, such as MXenes, transition metal oxides, alloys and graphene oxide. Finally, the challenges and prospects of each element and their derivatives and hybrids for future battery systems are discussed, which may provide guidance towards green, low-cost, versatile and sustainable energy storage devices.

With the development of electric vehicles involving lithium ion batteries as energy storage devices, the demand for lithium ion batteries in the whole industry is increasing, which is bound to lead to a large number of lithium ion batteries in the problem of waste, recycling and reuse. If not handled properly, it will certainly have a negative impact on the environment and resources. Current commercial lithium ion batteries mainly contain transition metal oxides or phosphates, aluminum, copper, graphite, organic electrolytes containing harmful lithium salts, and other chemicals. Therefore, the recycling and reuse of spent lithium ion batteries has been paid more and more attention by many researchers. However, due to the high energy density, high safety and low price of lithium ion batteries have great differences and diversity, the recycling of waste lithium ion batteries has great difficulties. This paper reviews the latest development of the recovery technology of waste lithium ion batteries, including the development of recovery process and products. In addition, the challenges and future economic and application prospects are described.
