Herein we report the application of a Co(II) PNNH pincer catalyst system (PNNH = 2-(5-(t-butyl)-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-6-(dialkylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) for the highly E-selective transfer semihydrogenation of internal diaryl alkynes using methanol and ammonia borane...

Studies aimed at synthesizing surfactants from biomass-based feedstocks using Pd-catalyzed telomerization of 1,3-butadiene resulted in the development of a highly active catalyst system. A ligand screening was performed, and Pd/tris(2-methoxyphenyl)phosphine (TOMPP) was identified as the most promising catalyst. A solvent- and base-free protocol was developed, which allows efficient and selective conversion of a wide variety of polyol substrates (e.g., glycerol, diols, carbohydrates, and sugar alcohols). In the case of hemi-acetal bearing sugars, catalyst deactivation was observed and mechanistic studies showed that extensive formation of ligand-derived phosphonium species depleted the amount of available ligand. Stoichiometric coordination reactions gave insight into the phosphine alkylation mechanism and demonstrated the reversibility of the observed reaction. A simple and efficient one-pot synthesis method was developed for the preparation of [Pd((1-3,7,8η)-(E)-octa-2,7-dien-1-yl)(PR3)]+ complexes, which are key reactive intermediates. Based on these studies, an extended telomerization mechanism is proposed, which accounts for the formation of ligand-derived phosphonium species and the reversibility of reaction pathways.

A rapid strategy to synthesize a highly active PtRu alloy nano-sponge catalyst system for methanol electro-oxidation is presented. The greatly increased Pt utilization, anti-CO poisoning ability and electronic effect result from the porous nano-sponge structure.

Herein, we present (<i>Z</i>)-selective transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes based on in situ generated CuNPs in the presence of hydrogen donors, such as ammonia-borane and a protic solvent. This environmentally-friendly method is characterized by operational simplicity combined with high stereo- and chemoselectivity and functional group compatibility. Auto-oxidation of CuNPs after the semihydrogenation reaction is completed results in the formation of water-soluble ammonia complex, so that the catalyst may be reused several times by simple phase-separation with no need of any special regeneration process. Formed NH4B(OR)4 can be easily transformed back to ammonia-borane or to boric acid. In addition, one-pot tandem sequence involving Suzuki reaction followed by semihydrogenation was presented.<br>

This review covers all known examples of [3 + 2]-cycloaddition between sydnones and both terminal as well as internal alkynes/cycloalkynes taken from literature since its discovery by Huisgen in 1962 up to the current date. Except enumeration of synthetic applications it also covers mechanistic studies, catalysis, effects of substituents and reaction conditions influencing reaction rate and regioselectivity.
