AbstractBiological and population parameters of the predatory bugs Macrolophus costalis Fieber and Macrolophus pygmaeus Rambur preying on the tobacco aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) were examined. Tobacco was used as host plant and all experiments were carried out at 23°C and L16:D8. In M. costalis, the developmental time for eggs and the total duration of nymphal instars was 13.1 and 22.2 days and in M. pygmaeus 13.0 and 20.2 days, respectively. Both species completed their nymphal development feeding only on plant juices although they required significantly more time to attain adulthood than when feeding on prey. The longevity of M. costalis females and the preoviposition period were 49.9 and 5.6 days and those of M. pygmaeus were 50.3 and 6.3 days, respectively. Adult males showed a higher longevity than females in both species. The intrinsic rate of increase and the mean total number of eggs laid were 0.0644 and 121 in M. costalis and 0.0615 and 104 in M. pygmaeus, respectively. Mean total aphid consumption by nymphs of M. costalis was 61 aphids, about twice that of M. pygmaeus (37 aphids). Total aphid consumption by a male and female pair of M. costalis and M. pygmaeus until the death of the female was 244 and 285 aphids, respectively. The results of the study are discussed in relation to the impact of the two predatory bugs on tobacco aphid populations.

The incidence of the aphid pathogen, Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudière & Hennebert) Humber, was monitored in populations of the Myzus persicae (Sulzer) complex (green peach aphid, M. persicae, and the tobacco aphid, M. nicotianae Blackman) on fall-planted cabbage, spinach-mustard, and turnip from 1993 to 1996. Each fall, the pathogen occurred at moderate levels in M. persicae complex on all three hosts. Average level of mycoses on the three host plants ranged from 10.0 to 14.3% in 1993, from 5.9 to 10.1% in 1994, and from 7.9 to 17.4% in 1995. Each year, the highest incidence of the pathogen in aphids on turnip and spinach-mustard was 20 to 25%, while the incidence on cabbage was 12 to 19%. In 1995 and over the 3 yrs combined, the levels of mycoses were significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) in aphids on turnip and spinach-mustard than on cabbage. Trends were similar in 1993 and 1994, but differences were not significant. Very low numbers of healthy aphids (<2 per 5 plants in 1994 to 5 aphids per 5 plants in late April 1996) and those infected with or killed by P. neoaphidis occurred on turnip, cabbage, and spinach-mustard from Jan to May. The M. persicae complex was significantly more abundant on cabbage than it was on spinach-mustard or turnip. The pathogen overwinters at very low levels in cadavers of M. persicae complex on Brassica.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the foraging behavior of Aphidius matricariae (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) as a biological control agent of Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a key and cosmopolitan pest of tobacco fields. To achieve a strategy for the control of this pest and a mass-rearing program of the parasitoid, host stage preference, switching, functional response, and mutual interference of A. matricariae were investigated at 25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 5% RH and 16:8 h L:D photoperiod. The parasitoid showed a preference for third- and fourth-instar nymphs of tobacco aphid in both choice and no-choice experiments. Using the Murdach's model, switching behavior was observed in A. matricariae between different density proportions of third- and fourth-instar nymphs. Further, the parasitoid exhibited a type II functional response when it was offered to third-instar nymphs of M. persicae nicotianae at six densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64). Based on the linear regression analysis, there was a significance difference between the logarithm of per capita searching efficiency and the logarithm of parasitoid density. As the wasp density increased, per capita searching efficiency decreased. The result of this study revealed that A. matricariae is an effective agent in the integrated management of M. persicae nicotianae. In addition, application of these results can be important in mass-rearing program of A. matricariae.

The mechanisms of transmission of potato viruses from plants to aphid vectors and from aphids to uninfected plants are described, including the example of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae, GPA). Factors affecting the spreading of tuber necrosis and its manifestation on plants infected with potato leafroll virus (PLRV) are discussed. Recommendations for PLRV and GPA control in the field are given.
